Indeed if there is one thing that will unite the Muslims, then it is tawheed.

This is what the Messenger of Allah called to, and this is what united the Sahaba to become the strongest army that the world has seen in the last 1,500 years (by the permission of Allah).

Before this, the arabs were known to be dis-united until the arival of Islam.

Note the statement of Allah to the Sahaba,

(meaning of which is)..

"And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allâh (i.e. this Qur'ân), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allâh's Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islâmic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allâh makes His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc) clear to you, that you may be guided."

[Surah 3:103]

So this belief that the Messenger came with united the people behind one belief.

The belief in worshiping Allah alone and setting up no rivals with Allah (in any shape, way or form, etc).

This call that the Messenger came with unites.

Look at how Allah describes the disbelievers, (meaning of which is)..

"..You would think they were united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are a people who understand not."

[Surah 59:14]

We should avoid being like the disbelievers.
