So if I take a crappy guitar that sounds like a mashed cat and, make it look as bad as it sounds is that cool? Then I have a crappy sounding guitar that looks liks a crappy sounding OLD guitar. Since when is a guitar judged to be good by how it looks? I am a sheep. Marketing has told me how to be cool. I must go ruin my guitar now. BA AA AA AA. I want to be a non- conformist, just like all my friends.
@WonderExperience Did you even read my comment? The analogy you used makes no sense. The point was, relicing is a fad, it doesn't make any guitar SOUND any better. It's like white guys with afros in the '70s, or wearing flannel in the '90s to be "grunge". Oh and since the best thing you could come up with was the "your mom" thing. If your mom has sex with a donkey, and the donkey doesn't pay her, is she still a whore?
there are several videos on youtube that show how to do that. none of them mine. Its a combo of a lot of things, bridge, nut, truss rod. Dan Erlewene has a great book on guitar repair, you can find it on amazon.
This whole relic trend is exactly that - a fad. Its like bell bottoms or painting your car with a paintbrush (something dumbasses did in the 70's). Why not just play your guitar and let it age naturally? Oh wait. . .then you can't be a poser and look like you are someone that you are not.
the feel of the instrument changes pretty drastically and some guys prefer it to a shiny new feel. i have a jazz bass that i relic'd only the back of the neck cuz i like how smooth it feels but i left the rest of it cuz i like my guitars to look new.
Now that I look back my comment was a bit aggressive. I guess I was a bit taken back by the concept of deliberately knocking an instrument around. I guess it's no different than buying worn jeans. Peace.

How do you lower the strings and set the action? I'm new to the new guitar market.

Once I have reliced a guitar, i'm with you, I can definitely feel a big difference in the "feel" of the guitar.

I always find it amusing how polarizing relicing a guitar is. Some of the reactions that people leave are pretty passionate.
Good comment, BTW. :)

Once again.. Relicing guitars is a VERY polarizing topic. thanks for the comment.
toneslingercliff 3 years ago
good comment, and I can tell you are passionate about the way you feel.
You're right, it is a fad or a trend, but it will always have a niche for those who enjoy it.
toneslingercliff 3 years ago
sooo i could do this myself
gnrmanmatt 3 years ago
with a little practice yea. I wouldn't try it on a high dollar instrument as your first try. start with a cheapo.
toneslingercliff 3 years ago
yeah that what i was thinking
gnrmanmatt 3 years ago
I did my first few relics with SX guitars. they are cheap and easy to relic and they sound pretty good.
toneslingercliff 3 years ago
Cut out the rubbish intro?
liveinthai 3 years ago 4
the music intro? or the intro video talking about the process?
toneslingercliff 3 years ago
i like your movies they inspired me.but i cant do relics.i gonna try but im gonna do it after your instructions:P
plockenisse 3 years ago
Dont try your first relic on a good guitar. buy a cheapo from a pawn shop or garage sale for starters.
My first relic looked horrible but I learned a LOT and they get better every time I do one.
toneslingercliff 3 years ago
ok.thanks for the tip i was about to buy a telecaster and try it but i gonna take my old guitar first;)
