  • best version ever....the interaction between Richard and Janis is magic

  • Really great how Richard Bona can play back and add really wonderful accent notes.

  • This is so beautiful.. love their interaction. Quality of two great musicians, getting together on the spot there, with such a great performance :)

  • @basslinerxx we know how great Bona is, but she can play some guitar too! watch the fingers and listen to the chords. Song writing is supposed to sound like this!

  • @rmalone1020 anyone just has to love the looks they give eachother when there's a little magic moment, surprised and amazed at eachother ;)

  • @basslinerxx he is just great at jumping from harmonics to full bass notes, doing licks with a 3 or 4 octave range without a chirp or sqeal, and without missing a beat. I have to listen again and again!!!

  • Wowwww...Just super!!

  • very fine video-

  • aaaaaah, so so nice! If I was a girl I'd love to sing this song...

  • I bought all her LP's thru the 70's..this is truly an amazing performance of the song....think I'll go to the used shops and look for those old LP's on CD..thks for posting..

  • Wonderful... beautiful...

Nothing was missed: This is a Live performance with all the elements that come in such a moment... improvisations and all.

  • 11 people never never learned the truth

  • thumbs up if you listened to this instead of searching for justin beiber =/

  • classic. deep.

  • Hate to say, i've never heard of Mr. Bona, but after this; what a great bass player. He has sooooo much feeling for this kind of music! I enjoyed him as much as her. Bless you both!!!!! and thank you...

  • haaaaaa richard bonaa is sooo amazing!!!

  • This woman has gotten better, like a fine wine, with age. Rest in peace Phoebe Snow and we will let Janis finish the concert...

  • I love Bona's musicianship, and he is one of the best bassists on the planet, but he clearly missed some changes here...probably a last-minute impromptu duet?

  • @herrdruhl being the plass player, you gotta have the chords before they' re played, and, in that case, you could not anticipate them... So, this was obviously a first time

  • Just plain AWESOME! Great lyrics , musically Janis is great but Richard Bona adds something that make this classic even better ,haunting beautiful

  • 11 ugly ducklings disliked this great song !

  • Richard Bona ...... GREAT AS USUAL ...... amazing bass player, thanks for sharing

  • WOW!! Now that's how to play bass. What a spectacular performance. I love songs like this that have intricate subtle bass lines. Richard really shows how it's done though. All those little fills & polyrhythms, use of texture and even fretting like a lead guitarist, demonstrate what a wonderful instrument a bass guitar can be in he hands of a skilled performer. As for Janice; that bitter sweet balladeer with the voice to make a songbird swoon, how can you sing so damn well after all these years?

  • My god her voice hasnt changed in 40 years! and Richard's funky bass is wonderfully original. i love it!

  • Wonderful redition of her classic song, great colaboration with Richard Bona

  • just perfect

  • que la musique est belle quand elle est chantée comme cela

  • This is amazing! The dynamics are so powerful in this! The mix is just perfect. A work of art...

  • Can two wonderful musicians have more fun in making music 2gether????..NO!!!!

    Tks 4 the upload.

    Vanu.

  • Wow, her guitar plying is superb: she plays in pocket + beautiful tone. Love it :)

  • why people dislike this song?

  • wow her voice is just the same as when she was younger.i love her voice!

  • she has no idea what to do with her self... (: you can see she is amazed and charmed by this guy who is most prob playing this song for the first time in his life...

  • there's magic betweem them two... :-)

  • Learn the words, wake up and get it. Everyone is beautiful/handsome in their own special way. "You're importance exists only in your realm of influence." You do have a realm of influence. :)

  • Oui, magique, juste magique. La musicalité se révèle toujours dans la simplicité. Merci pour ce moment de bonheur.

  • hahaha! Peace of cake 4 Bona..lol Long Live Bassona..

  • Great musician, great bass player..............this is the music

  • ze zijn nog een beetje te doen, hoor. juist komende uit de AVRO, zeker ? thanks a lot janis and richard, vous êtes tout simplement à croquer.

  • everytime that richard plays a nice lick, janis smile to him... it should happen in every stage of the world between musicians...

  • epix!

  • she sounds great here

  • What a beautiful version of this lovely song. The little pause cadence and a pause at a mid way ("8") is a stroke of genius. Gorgeous!

  • so tender and charming... thank you!

  • I remember this show. As I recall she also performed 'She Must Be Beautiful' and 'On The Other Side' from her, then latest, album "God And The F.B.I." Both performances were really great. These actually should be posted here aswell... Anyone?

  • Both great artists, although it's obvious that Bona doesn't know the structure of the song completely. He's searching for the right note, sometimes. Ror instance at 2.50 she gives him a hint to go up, but he doesn't follow her.

    A beuatiful song, still.

  • Janis never ceases to be amazing and Richard is a killer, two great artists.

  • Absolutely amazing rapport between two very different musicians. Every time i watch it, new minute details surface.

  • voice is still there .. i like this!

  • Absolutely, unequivocally awesome!!!

  • I have lost my speech - this is freakin awesome - "indull surprise when payment due xceeda accounts recieved at Seventeen" Who writes like that - Janis Ian that's who - this remains year locked in truth and sheer briilance - performed here in all it's simple poetic glory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • am so glad my aunt told me about this video. i love it!

  • two beautiful artists! obviously, both brilliant.

this, to me, is the best rendition of the song among all other performances.

    thank u for posting.

  • Richard compliments her so effortlessly and melodically at 2:15, 2:16 and 2:17 that she has to turn to him with a thankful smile.....pure magic!

  • @Khaliyl19 It happens again at 3:34-3:39...great stuff!

  • so coool

  • B O N A Is GENIUSSSS!!!!!!!!!

  • How smoooooooooth.......

  • the best version that I've listened

  • How completely poetic and beautiful your voice is. I met you in Glasgow when you performed in the fruit market. You are so giving and so warm. We could not beleive it when you spoke to us. wow!!, then signed our bits and bots! Will never forget your warm!

  • this is nice!

  • what a beauty how this song were put together great performance can't bet it.....

  • They know they are good and so do I.

  • Now that's a bass player!!!

  • what happened to her hair? lol

  • Bloody amazing!!!!!!!!! 10/10

  • meu sonho é tocar com uma grande cantora como janis

  • Comment removed

  • Never cared for the self-pitying lyrics of this, but great music. The opposite of most songs written by women.

  • ...I love your comment, it's hilarious!

  • Almost forgot about this tune, but it all came back... This version is great! Wish I knew how to play an instrument!

  • I am a man and this song breaks my heart. I feel so privileged to hear this and to have grown up in the 60's and 70's. God bless you all.

  • This video is musical magic. My understanding is not only was this the first time they ever played together, it was the first time he had ever heard the song. Brilliant. Very rarely does a solo artist ever turn to his/her accompanist, as she does at the end, and thank them before acknowledging the audience. She was fully aware of the magic they both just created.

  • @edcassells yes it was magic!

  • You can see the joy they find in each others music ...makes this a joy to watch

  • really nice :)

  • Janis is such a treasure. Love her. :)

  • Moi je veux un gros bisous

  • @ 2:15, the little bass line he does, she loves it. I love that musician's connection. I've experienced it many times with my close friend who's a bassist. Amazing simple and calming song. I've always loved it. The lyrics are so true.

  • Ils sont beaux tous les deux , j'adore !!!

  • Devine.

  • j'adore !!!

  • long live cameroon talented People ! Ckeck ma channel FROM SWEDEN !!

  • Wow...she sounds great!! Nice vid.

  • Meet Bona a few weeks ago... great funny guy. Let me play his Fodera.. had to buy him a rum and coke for that. Love the interplay in this vid. Janis Ian is so cool and so deep... love the darkness and smiles in this tune.

  • Shades of Janis and Richard coming throught the snow and the pine wood trees.

  • Class.

  • I love this song but when Richard played that lick at 3:34

    I literally screamed "WHOOOOOOO"!!!

  • That was absolute class, still very moving....!

  • It can"t get any better than this ..... can't

  • Singing with true emotion, every word something special, is what it is all about. Janis Ian, still a pro!

  • Wow Janis still sounds great.

  • Ian & Bona ! They just get better and better and better .

  • Brilliant !! the smile's. Looks of understanding. Great song, marvelous musicians. Nice hair.... Thanx for posting.

  • They play beautifully together! Janis is just brilliant! Love her hair!!! And when she flashes that smile of hers, I feel it everywhere!

    Thanks for posting!

  • Love this video. Thanks for posting.

  • He's one of the greatest bass players around, and an excellent singer. Show him some respect you ignorant fool.

  • yeah, but still an unnessecary thing to say...

  • ahahahaha that was nasty

  • Thanks for posting. I have seen Janis a few times in concert. She is brilliant. Lovely voice and meaningful lyrics.

  • Some people seem to only have eyes for superficial things and stupid prejudices. To not hear the beauty in janis voice and also see beauty in a mature woman is merely frightening. what kind of people? such disrespect. And certainly no feeling for real music at all.

I can hear and see beauty. And it is very touching. Thank you Janis and Richard!

  • Excelenteeee vamos richard.!!!

  • i hope your not a fanny like your name shawn

  • voice is still great but she looks like a pig chewing a wasp

  • lollercaust

  • yea that what singing about lolz

  • i hope you aren't as ugly as your attitude, turksmikey

  • ROLFL

  • is that a zon bass?

  • いつ聞いてすばらしい曲です。わたしの17歳頃を思い出します。

  • me hace llorar .....es grandiosa

  • Just beautiful. I feel like she wrote this song about me.

  • One of the few musicians that can sing their songs just as good as they did when they first sang them. Very nice.

  • Wonderful, relaxed performance of a great song! Thank you for posting this. Five stars and saving to my favourites.

  • At the lyric, "When choosing sides for basketball" Bona just strokes her emotion so gently where upon she can only turn look and smile

  • Khaliyl19, well put. also she has never heard such flavor , like that in her song before. Bona really adds a different feel to the song. I even like the song now, cause before hearing it through the hands of Bona, I thought it was just another boring song.

  • WOW!!! what a great duo!! a great song and a great bass player!!5*

  • She should lose the punky hairdo, though. In San Francisco, she probably wouldn't get a second curious look. Her voice is great, though! I heard her music at a restaurant and fortunately, someone knew who the singer was.

  • Thanks for this vidéo ! !just a dream .

  • Janis is such a treasure. I saw her about a month ago in New Jersey and she was great and such a nice person to talk to. Love her. :)

  • My dad said he had a crush on her when he was growing up.

So I guess that's why I never really thought of her as a "Ugly Duckling" Certainly not when she was younger

  • Canta como si fuese de Carballo

  • CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!

  • FIRS

This is in my top ten and this version in particular - Lawrence

  • Dream duo,

    Janice Ian , minnie ripperton

  • Very much enjoyed !!!

  • If you Google "musical conversation" ... this video should pop up #1.

    Outstanding.

  • my wife hoovers to this album

  • What a nice creative bass out there! I really like that bass. Good blending of elite guitars! Alright!

  • I first heard this song wen I was 17 and just love it, Janice Ian is a most beautiful person and singer, if you like acoustic sounds, check out, connor fields of gold, its a young boy of 11 singing and playing guitar, he is sooo cute and very talented go on av a watch you will be glad u did :)

  • You must be retarded, and no, he probably didn't know exactly what he was gonna play, but he made it sound damn good, and that's what music is all about.

  • At 3:37 Janis couldn't help laughing...

  • I hope you know, that was a laugh of amazement. Richard Bona is so tasty she could help but, crack a big smile. In her mind she thought, man that was nice, so she show it with a big smile.

  • Absolute Genius - and such Beauty to be seen.

    Clyde

  • just beautiful! first time to hear richard bona. they're great together. subtle.

  • richard bona is the greatest.

  • I never heard this song, now i do, a great one!

Richard bona is a great friend of the BassMaster Victor Wooten. Richard is a great bass player!

  • can someone tell me were richard bona come from

  • he came from cameroon, studied in paris, and blown everybody in USA! \o/

  • great song, great performance - maybe just perfect :)

  • Really Love this song...first heard it when my mother brought home one of those "Midnight Special" dvds. Wow Richard Bona too? Awesome!

  • I love this song !

  • 1:06 with the Harmonics

    Beautiful Placement Richard!!!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time: timeless lyrics of the truths of early youth

  • Great, touching song......and that bass player is a bad ass.

  • Bona's one of my favorites...

  • You know it's funny, when you are a 17 year old guy, you never see the real beauty in girls. When you hit adulthood, you start to see the real beauty. Too bad.

  • Saw and heard Janis on a replay, on 06-28-08, of the first "Saturday Night Live" hosted by George Carlin (1975). Janis is still GREAT!

    The Bobster

  • Sounds absolutely fantastic and is played beautifully...until the modulation at 1:16. IMO I don't think Bona knows this song very well but he does a good job if that's the case.

It's very likely that, as a session player, he's been given this at the last minute, or he's depping for someone. :D

  • He probably learned it on the way to the gig.

  • omg ..... did he mess up at 2:51....... when she changes the chord bona is playing the wrong note... i think....

if u agree please send your confirmation.

    Beautiful song and playing....

  • he might have... but he might have not. There are a lot of songs where the guitar player changes the chord while the bassist remains on the root note of the previous chord.

  • Another style where the guitar and the bassist play different notes would be a chord progression like this: D-A/C#-Bm-G. Have a friend play that "A" on 2nd chord while on the bass, do play C#. That's what they call slash chords. On the chord A/C#, the guitar plays "A" while the bass play "C#". James Taylor songs have a lot of that.

  • cool thanks im a big fan of james taylor

  • I think you are right. I don`t know if he´s playing false notes, but the rythmic flow stops for a second. Bona doesn´t play up to his usual standard in this song, but Janis Ian

    sings beatiful.

  • In the intro was said that this was the first time they played together, that might explain it as they haven't practiced together

  • Weetikveelwelkenaam, thanks for your reply. That explains everything.

  • Como Joni y Jaco.

  • I love Janis' reaction to the tasty lick at 3:34, but it's even better to hear how Richard distracted himself. The fret buzz he gets at the end of the lick is pretty bad. :D

  • Janice, you are better than ever.

  • She is still great with a beautiful song.

  • Janis Ian, you are as great now as you were 30 years ago! I love you :-))

  • that is just one of the best sounds I've heard for a long time!! just superb!

  • What a beautifull song. Writen when songs actually had a meaning.Great expression and a beautifull voice.A classic.

    Peter.

  • I didn't realise Lenin was around then!

  • Thats a nice Santa Cruz Guitar, her signature Guitar from SAGC.

  • Now that's a bass player!

  • lekker and warm.

  • Love the way she smiles when he plays a cool bass line.

  • To quote Sir Paul McCartney,- All the lonely people... so, God Bless them all...

  • ***** Great song

  • Very Nice....such a soothing voice

  • Vraiment excellent comme chanson. Tres pure et qui nous fait voyager ....J'adore

  • awesome! thanks ric2211

  • thanks ric221...Janis Ian is tops!

  • brings me back to my younger days!!
