@basslinerxx we know how great Bona is, but she can play some guitar too! watch the fingers and listen to the chords. Song writing is supposed to sound like this!
@basslinerxx he is just great at jumping from harmonics to full bass notes, doing licks with a 3 or 4 octave range without a chirp or sqeal, and without missing a beat. I have to listen again and again!!!
I bought all her LP's thru the 70's..this is truly an amazing performance of the song....think I'll go to the used shops and look for those old LP's on CD..thks for posting..
Hate to say, i've never heard of Mr. Bona, but after this; what a great bass player. He has sooooo much feeling for this kind of music! I enjoyed him as much as her. Bless you both!!!!! and thank you...
I love Bona's musicianship, and he is one of the best bassists on the planet, but he clearly missed some changes here...probably a last-minute impromptu duet?
@herrdruhl being the plass player, you gotta have the chords before they' re played, and, in that case, you could not anticipate them... So, this was obviously a first time
WOW!! Now that's how to play bass. What a spectacular performance. I love songs like this that have intricate subtle bass lines. Richard really shows how it's done though. All those little fills & polyrhythms, use of texture and even fretting like a lead guitarist, demonstrate what a wonderful instrument a bass guitar can be in he hands of a skilled performer. As for Janice; that bitter sweet balladeer with the voice to make a songbird swoon, how can you sing so damn well after all these years?
she has no idea what to do with her self... (: you can see she is amazed and charmed by this guy who is most prob playing this song for the first time in his life...
Learn the words, wake up and get it. Everyone is beautiful/handsome in their own special way. "You're importance exists only in your realm of influence." You do have a realm of influence. :)

Both great artists, although it's obvious that Bona doesn't know the structure of the song completely. He's searching for the right note, sometimes. Ror instance at 2.50 she gives him a hint to go up, but he doesn't follow her.

This video is musical magic. My understanding is not only was this the first time they ever played together, it was the first time he had ever heard the song. Brilliant. Very rarely does a solo artist ever turn to his/her accompanist, as she does at the end, and thank them before acknowledging the audience. She was fully aware of the magic they both just created.
@ 2:15, the little bass line he does, she loves it. I love that musician's connection. I've experienced it many times with my close friend who's a bassist. Amazing simple and calming song. I've always loved it. The lyrics are so true.
Meet Bona a few weeks ago... great funny guy. Let me play his Fodera.. had to buy him a rum and coke for that. Love the interplay in this vid. Janis Ian is so cool and so deep... love the darkness and smiles in this tune.
Some people seem to only have eyes for superficial things and stupid prejudices. To not hear the beauty in janis voice and also see beauty in a mature woman is merely frightening. what kind of people? such disrespect. And certainly no feeling for real music at all.
I can hear and see beauty. And it is very touching. Thank you Janis and Richard!
Khaliyl19, well put. also she has never heard such flavor , like that in her song before. Bona really adds a different feel to the song. I even like the song now, cause before hearing it through the hands of Bona, I thought it was just another boring song.
She should lose the punky hairdo, though. In San Francisco, she probably wouldn't get a second curious look. Her voice is great, though! I heard her music at a restaurant and fortunately, someone knew who the singer was.
I first heard this song wen I was 17 and just love it, Janice Ian is a most beautiful person and singer, if you like acoustic sounds, check out, connor fields of gold, its a young boy of 11 singing and playing guitar, he is sooo cute and very talented go on av a watch you will be glad u did :)
You must be retarded, and no, he probably didn't know exactly what he was gonna play, but he made it sound damn good, and that's what music is all about.
I hope you know, that was a laugh of amazement. Richard Bona is so tasty she could help but, crack a big smile. In her mind she thought, man that was nice, so she show it with a big smile.
You know it's funny, when you are a 17 year old guy, you never see the real beauty in girls. When you hit adulthood, you start to see the real beauty. Too bad.
Sounds absolutely fantastic and is played beautifully...until the modulation at 1:16. IMO I don't think Bona knows this song very well but he does a good job if that's the case.
