@tHeMaN998rocks You betcha!! How often do you see it called? Not often and the defenders usually are able to imbalance the offensive player , therefore gaining an advantage! Officiating is supposed to be about advantage vs. disadvantage.
Im not sure about NBA, but in Europe hand-check is NOT a foul. As long as you dont push or constantly harass the opponent you can place one of your hands along the opponent´s hip in order to "control" his next movement by noticing the movement of the hip... No fault at all. Actually... if the opponent hits that controling hand on purpose it will be his foul.
@atapoicos00 Hand checking is a foul here, but so often ignored especially which the defender is impeding the offensive player. We love it. It should not be foul unless the hand elevates passed the hips of the offensive player.
@TheControledGamer Well, it's too bad they don't like it! Do you like it when they handcheck you? Stand up to them because they must be fouling you or you wouldn't be using this technique, right?
@monnyg1 It will take a little while to develop, but it does work. From time to time officials may call you if the arm swings upward as your finish this technique, but don't let that stop you. It is no more wrong than the defender using their hand on your hip to control you on your attacks.
This really helped Coach. I did the whole steps in driving in and also on how to create space. Really affective. My basketball tryouts are coming next Tuesday and i am a really short point gaurd who is not that athletic. What do you think i should do to make the team?
In other videos you refer to this as important. Is it really that important. They don't hand check and also you could be called for foul, couldn't you.
@TutorialsOnHow You could be called for a foul if your arm swings back and up aggressively, like above your waist. It seems fair to say that the "hand check" should be a foul as well, No? Hand checks are ignored as the defender uses them to control where you go. You should decide whether you need the "Hammer" or not! It is a great equalizer.
@1gbpackfan1 Use the HAMMER!! Make them sorry for even trying to handcheck. If the refs not making the calls, there's not much you can do other than use your tools to gain the advantage. Take it to 'em!!
@demonwoman123 Well it is hard for us to know exactly what to tell you, however, good footwork is the key to proper balance in all moves. Take a look at your footwork and try to video yourself to check it out.
Thanks coach I can dunk its just I got exausted after my dunks that I made and they got sloppy and weak. 2 days ago I had a dunking fast break opportunity but I just layed it up. How long and often should I practice dunking. My dunking tecnique is teribble. But I can dunk with just to steps to the rim. My two hand jam hits the bottom of the rim. But generally goes in but it looks teriblle it bounces around the rim. And the video on my channel was made almost a year ago when I was 6 "4"
@williambrooks32 We believe players often spend too much time worrying about the dunk. The layup you shot got the job done, maybe not as dramatic, but solid. Focus on the important elements of your game and let the dunk come along as it may. Ball handling, shooting and defense rank higher for us than dunking.
Coach, I'm 15 years old 6ft 6in and I'm having trouble getting confidence to dunk on fast breaks because my hands aren't strong to grip the ball and I think ima miss it I need help when on my dunking tecnique can u help if u made a video or answer back. thank you
@williambrooks32 Will, we watched your video on you dunking the ball. You need to get another couple of inches higher on your jump and it should be a "No-brainer." We are sure that you have the strength, it's just learning how to use it. Often when we are trying to dunk our last couple of steps are too long and we do not convert the run-up to vertical. Shorten the last couple of steps and this will help to convert your run-up speed to more of a vertical lift and maybe enough to dunk it!
Coach, im having a huge argument with my friend over the rules of the game. I would play standard defence on him, (one hand guarding the shot and the other blocking the pass) and he would drive at my right foot, grabbing my arm and pushing it down for a clear path to the basket. i tried explaining to him that it was illegal but he insists that it is a reach in foul on me. i didnt make contact to him until he reached out at me. what do i do?
@corndog984 If your friend is grabbing your arm is any fashion, that is a foul on him!!! It is not a reach in foul unless you grab at or touch him with your hand or arm. It sounds to us like he is certainly fouling you!! He cannot grab you.
@CantBeTchd Continue to use the check until they begin to call you on it! It is really amazing to me that officials do not call this technique. It is really hindering the offensive player and getting an advantage.
@AznJohnyBoy The real reason is that Refs rarely call the "handchecks" used by defenders. The Hammer keeps it even. Defenders get away with using their hands on the offensive player for an advantage.
Thanks for making this vid. I was having trouble getting past my defenders b/c they are too quick nd hold me with their bodies. Anyone can answer this question. Is this a good move to create space when driving if the defender isnt using their hands????
@theallstarxx4: It doesn't do so much to create space, but it sure peels that "Hand-checker" off your body! It is still useful when they are not hand-checking,, because it instills the muscle memory to do this every time you attack.
dam, outrageous move. ShotScience I really like the beginning =P Could you believe that I finally worked hard enough to begin dunking! I just followed the the nba training plan over at "50-inch-vertical(dot)com" and managed it in just 1 and a half month!
@lawofuekiaddict: The "Hammer" takes care of the defender's "Hand Checking." Is hand checking cheating? Well, yes it is! Is it often called? NO! Learn to use the hammer and clean that hand checking up.
And the reason i ask this question was because i was watchin the hip-to-hip attack. If this is above my level what should i do inorder to do the hip-to-hip attack?
at the beginning it says it's an advance skill. And i just started learn how to improve my dribbles (THEY INCREASE ALOT THANKS TO YOU GUYS). Should i be able to do this or you think i should try it first ??+??= ????
Hi coach how do i prevent people from reaching in when i pass them ive tried the hammer but since i use my left hand for the hammer i can't stop them from reaching in when they try to reach in behind me from the right side
@Daytoven: If you get the ball out front they should not be able to reach around you to tap the ball out. That type of reach-around is the best example of really poor defense that we could offer. If they have to reach around to get to the ball "they are beaten" and just go to the rack. BTW, keep working on the "Hammer" as this will get those hand checks off your body!
i just gotta say this is so usefull im short, white, an can't jump too high but im goin all out on fundamentals and you really see how it puts you ahead of competion that has height, speed, etc over you

Today I played a 5on5 game. There were 2 instances when I tried to drive, but the ball was stolen from me. I know I wanted to use this move, but I can't seem to train my left arm to do this and I forget. Is there any drill I can use for "muscle memory" so that every time I drive, I automatically use the "HAMMER"?
@MARKSMAN2318 You probably were getting ripped because when you attempted to do the "Hammer" you exposed the ball in front of you and if you just keep practicing it , it will eventually come naturally.
@MARKSMAN2318 also, just take a close look at 1:40 he keeps his inside hand in front of himself when taking off to the basket. that is very important, so that it is available for the HAMMER when needed. also check out the rhythem of arm and foot. a lot of basket ball is about rhythem
@ampecsu Thanks, man. Actually, I saw this recently in one of the videos in youtube. But it was for cross-over dribbling. I guess I missed that one when I saw the "hammer" vid. I'll keep this in mind next time and see if there's any difference.

hey chase i am always watching about your blog ang tips....give me an advise on how to get rid on crowd i really cant help myself to put them away i cant focus on the tips you are making pls help me ..and i also get nervous becoz of them :(..help me
Hey chase, ive told my coach and teamates about you, your great. But i have a question that neeeds to be answered. One of my biggest problems in basketball is confidence and decision making as a point guard, and passing. What do you suggest i do to get better at all of these??
@MattMacAulay27: Hey Matt, thanks for your support. Confidence and decision making are really connected. Experience is also important in both of these considerations. The more experienced we become the fewer decision errors we make because we understand the game better. We call this "Game Aptitude." In other words, a better understanding of the game and all of its situations. To improve, try not to second guess yourself if you make a weak decision because that is what happens.
@MattMacAulay27: To continue, We refer to poor decisions or mistakes as "Yesterday's News." In other words, let it go and continue to play, it doesn't matter today. Every player who plays the game makes errors of decision until there aptitude grows and their skills improve. Hope this helps.
@thehalokiller6676: Well, that's amazing! But thanks for your comment. Hopefully, you will stay with us a we have many more videos to post and maybe help you more! Stay tuned and please, "Spread the Word."
@rouh6678: LOL, if it is a "fly Swatter" you will not be very successful in using this technique. It needs to be a "Sledge Hammer" so that the defender gets the idea! We want to drive his hand off our hip!!!!!!!!!!
@ocep1485: Well you can do a lot about your play by doing serious work on all your skills and then taking them to the court. Unfortunately, how tall we are or might get is not something we can alter or change. Sorry!
@987654321shaymin: We recommend that this move become an essential part of every drive. As you extend the ball for the dribble the "hammer arm" or opposite arm begins its swing. It needs to be "Agressive" every time, not just when you think there is a hand check coming. You make this move as you begin your attack, just as seen in the video. Defensive players get away with the hand check too often.
@123ipm: If you are too overt it could be called a foul, however, the hand check could also a foul!!! So do we allow one and not the other? Hand checking is one of the most overt and accepted fouls in basketball today. Officials are concerned about advantage-disadvantage but are not hard on hand checking which is intended to give an advantage to the defender.
I know there are no real drills you can do by yourself to teach these, but is there a successful way of developing court vision and passing aside from just experience?
ok so i'll get past a defender right. and then a center will show up. what do i do cause i usuallly get blocked in that situation. should i tell my teammates to go in the paint or what?
@unknownsungod3 So you've successfully drawn the defense. There are two things you should consider. One is looking for your opening to the hoop and the second is dumping the ball down to the person who's open because the defense rotated to you. If you have a better shot, you should take it, but if your teammate is open, give it up. To help you with finishing at the rim, check out our video called "Finishes at the Rim." We'll have a video on reading the defense coming up here soon!

@MARKSMAN2318 You probably were getting ripped because when you attempted to do the "Hammer" you exposed the ball in front of you and if you just keep practicing it , it will eventually come naturally.
gangster000005 1 year ago
@gangster000005: Thanks for your support for MARKSMAN. The Hammer is really useful to get rid of the hand checking. Thanks

@MARKSMAN2318: Just practice!!!!!!!!
ShotScience 1 year ago
@MARKSMAN2318 also, just take a close look at 1:40 he keeps his inside hand in front of himself when taking off to the basket. that is very important, so that it is available for the HAMMER when needed. also check out the rhythem of arm and foot. a lot of basket ball is about rhythem

ShotScience 1 year ago
@ampecsu Thanks, man. Actually, I saw this recently in one of the videos in youtube. But it was for cross-over dribbling. I guess I missed that one when I saw the "hammer" vid. I'll keep this in mind next time and see if there's any difference.

Hey chase, ive told my coach and teamates about you, your great. But i have a question that neeeds to be answered. One of my biggest problems in basketball is confidence and decision making as a point guard, and passing. What do you suggest i do to get better at all of these??
MattMacAulay27 1 year ago
@MattMacAulay27: Hey Matt, thanks for your support. Confidence and decision making are really connected. Experience is also important in both of these considerations. The more experienced we become the fewer decision errors we make because we understand the game better. We call this "Game Aptitude." In other words, a better understanding of the game and all of its situations. To improve, try not to second guess yourself if you make a weak decision because that is what happens.
ShotScience 1 year ago
@MattMacAulay27: To continue, We refer to poor decisions or mistakes as "Yesterday's News." In other words, let it go and continue to play, it doesn't matter today. Every player who plays the game makes errors of decision until there aptitude grows and their skills improve. Hope this helps.

my coach called it the fly swatter, lol
rouh6678 1 year ago
@rouh6678: LOL, if it is a "fly Swatter" you will not be very successful in using this technique. It needs to be a "Sledge Hammer" so that the defender gets the idea! We want to drive his hand off our hip!!!!!!!!!!
ShotScience 1 year ago
hi coach.. i am a 170cm 20 years old.. can I actually be a good basketball player or even get any taller by any change?
ocep1485 1 year ago
@ocep1485: Well you can do a lot about your play by doing serious work on all your skills and then taking them to the court. Unfortunately, how tall we are or might get is not something we can alter or change. Sorry!
ShotScience 1 year ago
Do you just swing the hammer automatically after you get past a defender ?
Cause I'm not really sure when a defender will handcheck me ..
987654321shaymin 1 year ago
@987654321shaymin: We recommend that this move become an essential part of every drive. As you extend the ball for the dribble the "hammer arm" or opposite arm begins its swing. It needs to be "Agressive" every time, not just when you think there is a hand check coming. You make this move as you begin your attack, just as seen in the video. Defensive players get away with the hand check too often.
ShotScience 1 year ago
is this a foul?
123ipm 1 year ago
@123ipm: If you are too overt it could be called a foul, however, the hand check could also a foul!!! So do we allow one and not the other? Hand checking is one of the most overt and accepted fouls in basketball today. Officials are concerned about advantage-disadvantage but are not hard on hand checking which is intended to give an advantage to the defender.

I know there are no real drills you can do by yourself to teach these, but is there a successful way of developing court vision and passing aside from just experience?
Fiteduhpowarr 1 year ago
@Fiteduhpowarr: None that we can think of! Just work on it.
ShotScience 1 year ago
ok so i'll get past a defender right. and then a center will show up. what do i do cause i usuallly get blocked in that situation. should i tell my teammates to go in the paint or what?
unknownsungod3 1 year ago
@unknownsungod3 So you've successfully drawn the defense. There are two things you should consider. One is looking for your opening to the hoop and the second is dumping the ball down to the person who's open because the defense rotated to you. If you have a better shot, you should take it, but if your teammate is open, give it up. To help you with finishing at the rim, check out our video called "Finishes at the Rim." We'll have a video on reading the defense coming up here soon!
