  • Okay lets face it all Native American dances are beauiful! And all the native americans sprits! I am proud to be a Shawnee American Indian tribe =D

  • Hey! I'm Eastern Shawnee!

  • :O me 2!!! Finally someone who is native American!!!

  • This dance represents the different stages of life, and also can be used as a courting dance,

the lady knows very well what she is talking about, I also am an Eastern blanket dance and I love it because it has dual meanings.

  • I want to thank Ahwahneechee for posting this video. I have gone on to win numerous awards from dancing The Eastern Blanket Dance. It is such a beautiful dance that I love and I dance from my heart.

  • So glad I found this! It's my first contest at Schemitzun and we danced at 1:30 in the morning after being in Grand Entry at noon! It was a bit disorganized back then but it was great. I remember the time!

  • Yo what, Natives man, and We didnt get archery from europeans man if you had any sense you would know that we had them since before crossing the land bridge! Before you judge find the correct history and not his story! Buy the way if you dont study history you would see that eropeans have been stealing from every culture since the begining of civilization, mainly africa,Egyptian knowlage was stole from greeks and romans.

  • there is still noactual proof that we crossed the land bridge. as of right now it's still just theory. don't paly into the white man's displacement propaganda. besides I still think them mutants came from space. every other race is brown wether light or dark. the caucasians are fukkin moon men thats why they're always tryin to get into space.

  • how come indians arent interested in our european greek culture horses came from europe and so did archery..

  • Archery didn't come from Europe, it came from pretty much everywhere. Horses came from what is Iraq today and Indians are interested in the Greeks as much as all Americans are. Hey I'm Cree, well half Ukrainian as well, but whatever, ans I like Greek Culture. What I want to know why people are so damn interested in Indians. God, must we dress up our children as Indians? Honestly, I don't see people dressing up as Chinese people on Chinese New Year. Well...other than actual Chinese people.

  • I am cree from canada as well so you must an "Injunk" half Injun(native) and half bohunk (Ukrainian) just joking. I dislike the chinese becuase they are now the 21 century "colonizers" mass immigrating to exploit our land when they have their own country.

  • @dogos78 lol i do ;) and i see people dressing up irish on saint patty's day too people just want to imbrace different cultures and be happy to learn

  • this dance has different meanings depending on the nation. the explanation i gave was of the nahahiganseck ceremony associated with this particular dance. each tribe i mentioned has their own version and own way of dance though to those unfamiliar it may all look the same. schemitzun popularized this dance during the mid 90's. until that time it was reserved for the harvest ceremonies.

  • ok, I belong to the northern new england tribes near the boarders of Canada and I never even heard of this dance till i went to Schmiztun?????!

  • the blanket dance is a dance of courting from the southeastern algonquin people narragansett wampanoag shinneckock peqout etc. the women lay their blanket down at the end of the dance in front of the man they will marry. this dance is well over 1000 years old and can be traced back to the royal dynasties of the algonquin peoples, most specifically the Narragansett. as they were the dominant tribe in the area contrary to pequot history

  • I am confused the lady on the vid said it was representing the different stages of life. So which is it? Was it a courting dance or does it represent the different stages of life? Any help would be appreciated.

  • courting dance

  • That was very refreshing after watching the "hip hop powwow" stuff (grr!). My only complaint was the camera operator needs to learn to pan slow and gentle. Swishing the camera back & forth was very detrimental to the video. Loved Josephine's explanation at the end.

  • Lovely! What year was this? Wado.

  • i never seen this dance before either, did they make it up? lol

  • We must learn to have respect for the tradition of all the nations on Turtle Island. Many of the Eastern Nations cultural espressions are quite different from western ones and we are damned lucky to have what we have.

  • this is really Beautiful never heard or seen of this dance before but it's very unqie and very cool

  • I had never seen a blanket dance....Very moving, and the explanation was very encouraging and comforting. Thank you...

  • great video/appreciate seeing it-when was it filmed?

  • for you an immense kiss like the sky hello with affection.

  • Halito, yes, first time seeing this kind of dance as well. I have only been to powwows in NJ and NY. Beautiful and facinating, I still feel it.

  • U.N.I.T.Y. is going to Oklahoma this summer of 2007. Natives from all over the nation will be there with their tribe. Come meet new people, share your culture. Their will be entertainment; food and dances. Their will also be workshops for college and health...Last year UNITY went to Buffalo, NY, and it was fun. Research some more about it. See you there!

  • I first saw this last week and saved it to my favorites & playlist. :D
