I know why they crashed. When the woman went off track, the bus driver compensated instead of holding ground and drove to the left, resulting in a crash when the texting/sleeping driver tried come back to her side.

@alarik95 No, the bus driver slammed on the brakes, and the force probably caused the bus to turn slightly. Notice the extremely rapid deceleration before the bus starts to turn. And even if she had stayed in place, the car still would have hit her.

The bus driver is partly to blame for the seriousness of the impact. Basic driver training teaches you to slow down and steer to the right. Had the bus driver done that, it would have been a sideswipe rather than a head-on. Instead, the bus driver steers left - into the path of the car.

@takethehighway711 you should watch again. the car was going across the path of the bus. the car was nearly all the way to the other side of the road so the bus driver turned left because at that moment the car's path was still towards the right side of the bus. the problem was that when the bus driver turned left to avoid the cars path, the driver of the car swerved back towards their lane bringing them back directly into the path of the bus.

@takethehighway711 The -absolute- law in most codes/sections states that a driver must take 'reasonable' response in order to AVOID a collision. If everybody were to "go to the right" then, especially in this case, the bus would have been compounding the problem. The bus was being responsible as possible. And, as I am in EMS, you can read it all day, month, year long. Until you are IN the situation, words on a page mean nothing.

@Mattamedic , take another look at the video. The car tries to get back into its own lane, but the bus swerves left, effectively cutting off the preferred escape route for the car. If the bus driver had cut to the right, he may have missed or at least had a more glancing blow to the car.
