Beautiful video! Am helping my daughter research spinning for a colony project and came across this. Very neat. I wish I could be there with her. Thank you! :0)
Thank You! For those of us who try to preserve "the old ways", it is wonderful to actually see techniques used - not just to learn from modern methods. Marty Mc
Thanks for letting us see this old piece of film! I found it fascinating. I noticed she is using what I have always thought of as a Shetland style wheel, where the brake band goes across a string between the two maidens. I do hope it is the old style film that is speeded up a bit - she doesn't really card THAT fast does she?
What a wonderful piece of history! It's rare to see footage of handspinning this old. I am so glad that the photographer didn't just focus on the machine but also included the spinners hands, which is where the spinning actually takes place. She is spinning "woolen" style yarn which is light and fluffy, perfect for knitting. Thanks for sharing this!

Wow, what a beautiful bit of the past caught on film. Does anyone else wish they were out spinning wool in the garden with her?

Simon, thanks for letting us see this. I've tried spinning and she makes it look so easy. It takes coordination and a real feel for the material.

WOW, so THAT'S how they did carding! Books don't explain it very well. Thanks so much for posting this educational spinning and hand-carding video!!!
