I read that Gene started off as a song writer and everyone else sang his songs...What a waste! He has the most beautiful voice I have heard..There is nobody who sounds like him, at all. That is truly unique!!!!
I remember going to see him in 2006 at The Cresset in Peterborough and it was the first concert I'd ever been to. He made my first concert experience an amazing one. My mum and I were going to see him again the same place the following year, sadly, of course he'd passed away.
I'm a great admirer of the late brilliant Gene Pitney's vocal talents, but I've got to admit that Wayne Fontana's original version of this definitely has the edge. I bought it in 1967. It should've been a smash back then. Also so should "Come on Home" Get the mono version, without the echo on the vocals.
DavidDiamond56. Your post really resonated with me. I too heard this song again after very many years and it moved me as much as the first time. It is a brilliantly stirring ballad.
Heard this song in I believe late 1970 on a mono AM radio in my kitchen in my childhood home in Detroit, and it just made me cry it was so awesome...
looked for it for 30 some years remembering it incorrectly as 34 Sycamore - typed in 24 instead accidently one night early in the Napster days and boom
got to hear it again at 3 am some 30 plus years later and
Hey guys! I truly LOVE this song. However, Gene Pitney (whom I admire greatly) did a COVER version. The original was done by Wayne Fontana, and in my view is an even better version.
I agree! Gene does a great version true to the original. But Waynes voice suits the mood of the song better. Both great versions though. To put it in context, if Wayne were singing TransCanada Highway or The Man who shot Liberty Valance it would not suit the songs as well as Genes voice.
Thanks for the info. I did know about the Wayne Fontana version but always thought Gene's was the original. He recorded it in late 1966 and it appeared on the UK track listing of his Just One Smile album.
Most dramatic song...Does anybody know if the girl sitting at a table at 3:00-3:05 is Nico? If so, did Nico and Gene know each other, or is it only a coincidence that they both sang duets with Marc Almond, separately, but on the same album, just before she passed away? Thank you, salud!
Yes... truly one of Gene's most emotional songs...not known by many other than long time Pitney fans...but I always loved the mood and style of this song
In respone to Brookdude i am 26 years old and all i have been brought up on is this kind of music now i listen to everyhting from this era to today but i really enjoy listening to this kind of music you would be surprised at how many people actually listen to this music i think that wayne fontana and the mindbenders version of this is better

As much as I love the music of Gene Pitney in this case I prefer the Wayne Fontana version of this song, still enjoy this version though.
