  • never realised how complicated theyre music was till i learnt this song

  • OMG! THIS is why blokes are always singing "munchy munchy twisties" when I buy a pack of them!! It's been going on for years and I didn't know what they meant. I just thought it was from a twistie commercial or something. GROSSSSS! ROFLMAO Red Symonds - I am shocked hee heee - LOVE THIS

  • Who the hell listens to the Veronicas? lol

  • the veronicas brought me here

  • The veronicas send me here ^_^

  • Love this video, they're all so pretty and colorful.

  • You better get a grip, you better pull yourself together lol I'm 43 and never heard this, only heard it the other day, and it wasn't till earlier tonight that I was woken to the fact this song is about "tossing the salad" Gotta love the Australian music and the guys from Skyhooks. Red, you still rock. R.I.P Shirl.

  • this is GOLD!

  • ha ha i loved this song when I was a kid- didn't know what it meant until my dad came into my room in a rage threatening to break it over my brothers head for giving it to me

  • Thanks for the video, I was always a huge Skyhooks fan anyway and then gained a whole new appreciation of them when I played some of their songs with my band in the late 80's... these guys were great musicians, intricate guitar lines and much fun to play!

  • I saw them open for Uriah Heep in the US in '76. I don't think the audience knew what hit them!

  • I was born in the wrong generation~!

  • Listening to this song now I can understand the meaning behind the lyrics takes away some of my childhood innocence. Only during the 1970’s could a song like this (about masturbating in a movie theatre) have been written, sung and been a success.

  • @UFCandWWEAddict I agree I didn't understand what they singing about until I was about 19 or 20. I loved them and still do.

  • Life's pretty straight without twisted bands like Skyhooks. Next time I go to one of those peepshows, I'll take along a bag of twisties and think about this song. ;)

  • Ooh la la la la la la la la...that kind of turned up in a Faker song a few years back slightly faster didnt it/

  • I've loved them when I was a wee nipper growing up in Sydney. Now more than ever, I'm struck by what a phenomenally talented band they were and what a great fucking debut album that was.Miss them.

  • I haven't been able to eat Twisties since the 70s because of this ... love it

  • fuck how tight live are these guys RIP shirl

  • Brilliant, so shocking at the time yet now wonderful, LOL@ Bongo's underwear

  • I LOVE RED!

  • all ive got to say bout this song apart from it being a classic from my mid teeens is

''ooh la la la la la ... lah'' lol

  • I often wonder if Red Symonds will ever mention the twisties technique when talking about the birds and the bees to his children when they grow up? Fantastic lyrics. I wonder how Red actually modified the twisties packet.....

  • Brilliant! Never thought they filmed a live version of Smut, I remember this album being banned from school when i took it into art class (the art teachers used to let us play records) and we were all pissing ourselves over this song about wanking, the teachers copped the lyrics then it was off the turntable and banned from the art department!

  • @blackie67 I know of two live tv performances. One was a kids TV show axed immediately after their performance , and also a concert at moomba 75 . They definitely plaued it and itwas shown ny by what is today 10 . Played for about 25 minutes. Never seen it anywhere else though or or the the footage from Sunbury 75 . ( which I think the Jayceees were allowed to film as part of a deal for selling of beverages ). Good to see though.

  • Seen this many times. Still awesome. Vocals are much better than on the album!!

  • cocaine yay!

  • twist33s are maltese BITCHEZZZ xD

  • @smokeoutTT WTF? Theyre cheese flavoured rice snacks!

  • a classic hooks song.

  • @SKYHOOKSFAN dirty, disgusting sex acts in a cinema.

  • Damn! I should have known this would have been posted from you NZOZ. LOL.

  • GOLD............thanks nzoz 1975 !!

  • Whipping the dripping has there ever been a better line in a song ever !!!

  • Man, it's a shame this group never took off here in the U.S. I've been enjoying the hell out of these videos. In some ways they remind me of The Tubes.

  • @BetamaxBabe the tubes were another great underated band

  • @BetamaxBabe No offence but I always thought they were better than The Tubes. Lyrically brilliant - tight as musos and theatrics to shock. What else do you want? Still actually imahine how great it would be to have a new album. Of course cannot be given Shirls passing. They were remarkable. Thanks for posting.

  • What a song! And the fact that it was made in the mid seventies. How cool! And Red looks so young in this clip! lol

  • THE BEST

  • Peepshow

  • great song

  • skyhooks was the first concert i ever went to in 1976 - had to pick between skyhooks and queen...oh well!!..anyway..thanks for the post..never seen this performance of a great aussie band..RIP Shirl

  • I would have gone to Skhooks as well,I have been dissapointed with so many oversaes acts that charge too much and give too little.ZZ Top,David Bowie and it dont get better re Britney Spears.Compare that lot to The Angels,Midnight Oil and Skyhooks and any other OZ act and you will have a better night with the locals!

  • Part of this music sound like something from a random kids TV programme and some of the lyrics too.

  • Well this is just grand. It's is one of the greatest songs. Don't know why it would cause people to get grumpy about. They ain't going to ban it today.

  • at least she is being completely honest.

  • Why doesn' this video have one of those pink bars above it stating that the content may not be suitable for minors?

  • lol...kids today a bit more sensitive than in the 70s?

  • No, not really. I just find this song to be inappropriate. By the way, I'm not a kid!

  • It's really not your business to question the content that was played on Australian television 30 years ago. It was not in your time and it's not your country.

Censorship is not as potent in Australia as it is in the USA. The album got banned and radio refused to play this song. The band jammed out this number on Aussie TV over 30 years ago - it didn't raise an eye brow then and the only eye brow that's being raised now, is yours. If you find this offensive, don't explore Aussie content.

  • Don't waste your breath! Besides, what I don't understand is why you've chosen to make your message public. Perhaps you could send me a message next time?!

  • Hey maybe rubinoos should listen to Juice on the loose from Rose tattoo

  • There's heaps of Aussie content that he may find offensive and I think it's worth a waste of breath to list just some of them.

    - Chasers War On Everything

    - 'Summer Heights High' and 'We Can Be Heroes'

    - Most of Skyhooks' catalogue

    - Number 96

    - Fast Forward / Full Frontal

    - Kevin Bloody Wilson

    - Rodney Rude

Personally, I think The Rubinoos suing Avril Lavigne over ripping-off a song that they nicked from The Rolling Stones ('Get Off My Cloud') is an offence in itself.

  • Um...I'm female. Anyway, some of what you mentioned probably isn't as offensive as some of the punk songs from the '70s, which I do listen to. To be completely honest, I don't even know why I posted that initial comment. I just seems like it doesn't make sense anymore.

  • ... interesting.

  • Were you being sarcastic?

  • You know, Elton Motello's "Jet Boy Jet Girl" probably has a more notorious reputation than anything by Skyhooks.

  • Yeah, yeah... I've known the EM song for nearly 30 years. It's not new to me...

As for this song, it doesn't have a notorious reputation. It's just simply tongue-in-cheek, like most of their material. Take it or leave it... I think the rest of us are pretty much over it.

And as for 'Jet Boy Jet Girl', I was hearing that song being played on radio during the daytime when I was a boy growing up in the 80's and I've come out of it okay... I'm sure kids who hear 'Smut' will too.

  • That was amazing. I am amazed this was allowed on ABC when most of the tracks off Living in the 70's were banned.

    Love it!

I think I've got a bootfull and my coat's stuck to the chair~ hehehehe

  • I love this song. An impresive piece of music from a great period in oz rock.

  • GONG 'IM RED

  • they were just naughty kids..... just like the kids listening to em !

  • And if she knew that you were whipping the dripping....she'd give you a belt, extract all the teeth off your fly! LOL. Skyhooks have become one of my new faves. Shame they did not get as much exposure in the states.

  • awesome song, suich flair with words and the music, rip shirl, a great voice both he and red have, gotta love em

  • Australia you've got talent :)

  • Every time I watch this video I get this overwhelming feeling. I'm a diehard new fan. Intoxicating.

  • i saw the whole documentary about the begginings of the glam/psychodelic rock

them, bowie , genesis, pink floyd...boy were they high :)

  • The good times

  • I find most comments that are made out of a knee-jerk reaction and does not have any form of information nor research, to be offensive.

There is no discrimination in this song whatsoever. The song is about a young person (a male, most likely) who has been caught out having a wank in the movie theatre. Who is it discriminating? Those who enjoy jerking off at the movies? Those who enjoy porn?

And where do 'sluts' fall into the picture? I don't get your point.

  • The song is fine, but it is pretty demeaning to you now you've posted your comment. Oh dear. I think you'll find the song is for the discriminating listner, and not for the foolish one. I have to agree though, all those smuts walking around should put some clothes on!

  • twisties \m/

  • musicianship is pretty good, but what the...

  • Australian humour...

  • LMAO I love this song!!

  • I was familiar with this name for a few years through Split Enz. But I only discovered their music last year. See, often times America only gets a fraction of the great music that folks from OZ and other countries produce. Sad but true.

  • Love Red Symons, im 18 now So i First knew him in "Hey Hey its Saturday" My Housemate introduced me into Skyhooks, I Couldn't fucking Believe it. i always saw red as a complete Senile hardass and then see him Kicking Ass in makeup and everything. Graeme's voice is Killer as well. RIP

  • Long live the skyhooks. This is real music. Forget 'modern' music. GO SKYHOOKS!

  • Cool song!Skyhooks rule! Does anyone have a live video of this song? I heard at the end of this song, that a giant penis shaped mushroom cums on the audience!

  • I wonder if Twisties wanted this kind of free promotion.

  • Burger Rings are better xD

  • Comment removed

  • I remember when they released the hooked on hooks medley. the b-side was this and the word smut was plastered over old photo of a fan. The girl sued i believe

  • I remember singing part of the chorus out loud around the house when I was like 5 or something. I used to wonder why my older sisters kept giggling and turning red faced. (pardon the pun).

  • ;-)

  • I remember my mum saying that obviously I did not understand the lyrics of Skyhooks songs, or I would not listen. I came back with something about Bob Dylan, Joan Byers and others who were political voices for her generation, and that perhaps SHE should really listen to some of the lyrics!! Of course I had a giggle at the pgr content of some of the songs!! But the subject matter was about REAL life, not looking thru rose tinted glasses. Love Skyhooks!

  • "I'm with you mate

rap should have a c in front of it"

The startling originality and sheer genius of this comment just made my bowels spontaneously erupt.

I don't know how I'm gonna get the stains out of your mum's couch.

  • The 70's in Oz - Sherbet and Skyhooks - still reckon the Hooks were the bastard son of Oz music in that era - you wanted to like them but wouldn't admit it. Had better riffs and vocals - Shirl you were amazing.

  • My fave Hooks song

  • same here

  • They were a fantastic group in there day,

  • This has to be my fave Skyhooks song of all time!!

  • LMAO! psh what bogan teen of the male gender hasn't jacked off or hasn't been jacked off in a cinema :P it's an age old bogan tradition. RED ROCKS MY WORLD

  • That's nice to know -- now I can continue to fondly recall my flatmate's major crush on him.

  • when this song came to Tas after release on the mainland my GFs and I thought it was boring and too slow to dance to. we knew something was different about shirley but we didn't know what. i see it now.

  • Not their classiest song, Red writing about masturbation. Good to see the boys in action just the same.

  • I agree brianofoz, the lyrics are tasteless but the melody is a work of 'GENIUS'. Had the lyrics been about something else, the song would have been a No1.

  • did not get the air play because of whipping the dripping. today it would

  • havent you had your hand on your tool

  • i love rap and 50 60 70s music

  • A GEM! hilarious that this was played live on TV! Parents would have been in uproar :)

  • How clever. Make a comment on a band you know nothing about and make yourself look like a complete moron.

Do us a favour - take some drugs and die.

  • Fuckin' redneck.

  • MrSteveUtah, you sound as selfrighteous and stupid as your prophet Joseph Smith, the plagiarist....Utah's idol.

  • $4.50 they cost me 5cents at our school hall lunchtime concert ...woodville high adelaide

    awesome......

  • I've known smut for a long time but did they actually play this in on TV in '74?

Cant imagine them doing it now...

  • Pass the twisties.

  • Red is the most pissed off man in butterfly face paint I've ever seen, haha

  • Great stuff...Red hould have taken the vocals on more Hooks tracks. He was great with the Mumbo Jumbo vocals as well. But still, Shirl was god.

  • This song is just one of many, many reasons why the Liberal Party never got around to asking Red to run for parliament for them!

  • 92% of Earth's youth listen to rap

if you are one of the 8% who listen to real music copy and past this into 10 different video comment board

    R=retards

    A=attempting

    P=poetry

  • im 15 and i hate rap, so do a lot of my friends

  • All this time I thought it was Fred Strauks singing this song, not Red. I have a vague memory of seeing Skyhooks perform this song and Fred going into a striptease at the end. Great song.

  • I lived in Carlton in the late 70's I was pretty young, still Skyhooks were awesome back then, lyrics that would now be classified

    as tame.

  • And back when they had a decent budget!

  • This is a superb addition to Youtube! NZOZ, I long for the day you make this stuff into a DVD (or avi or mpeg format) and share via bittorrent. Whoever would have guessed the 'Hooks performed this on GTK - back when the ABC was innovative and a force to be reckoned with - none of that puerile censorship nonsense for them... then.

  • very cool didnt realise they had a clip for Smut; They were rhythmically a very good band; lots of nice counter melodies and stuff here!. thanks for posting!

  • beautiful melody from red symonds..wish he had brought out a solo lp/cd but all we got were a few singles.

  • Thanks 4 posting & sharing this song from Skyhooks & all the others of theirs ~ ahhh brings back lots of funny and good memories ~ cheers!

  • this is very rare... it was found by somebody who passed it to another somebody who passed it on to me, but neither of us can track down the original somebody. The ABC are keen to get the original tape too.

  • Yes I imagine the ABC would be keen to get the original back. Wonder if Red or one of the others would have the original tape! cheers!

  • they don't.. the others have made inquires about it.

  • Wow, this video so typifies Skyhooks. If anyone asked me what Skyhooks was about, I would recommend this clip. If we could find the original we would have to have it 'Heritage Listed'.

  • Classic song by a classic band!
