BIG NEWS: John Schlitt to Reunite with Head East during Iowa Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame Induction Sept. 4 - Arnolds Park, IA
Sure to be a historical event, John will join the current Head East line-up on stage for a few of their most famous hits, including "Never Been Any Reason." This is the first time in more than 30 years that John has been on stage with the band.
Head East will be at the Illinois State Fair tomorrow, sadly no John. Was thinking if he was still singing for them it would almost be a homecoming since he is originally from Lincoln. Though when you consider it, the band was formed in Illinois so it kind of is a homecoming so to speak
I bet you John isn't wanting to go back in time and sing for Head East again. I mean this song is sad, very sad, just like John's life back then on drugs and was going to commit suicide! He found Jesus Christ and now sings for the King of Kings. If you like this sad stuff, listen to what John is singing about now! Praise God!
one of my all time favorites. i remember when JOHNNY played this in DECATUR ILLINOIS. john said they never got to play it with head east. beautiful song.
My husband is Tracy Lightstorm Turner, and he is the one who sounds like John not me..So many people mistake Tracy for John..It's easy to do so...They are similar in many ways.....Especially John's vocals.......
John is bigger then Steve Perry and many others...He is great in the Eye's of God and countless others...The most amazing voice ever..He has been my mentor for years to teach me to be a real vocalist...I was 17 years old when I started learning from him and it has paid off greatly....
Without a doubt, Head East was one of the most talented rock groups of their day...Still have some of their lp's up in the attic, since the turntable gave it up.. Sure would like to see someone post "Don't Let Me Sleep In The Morning" from the "Gettin' Lucky" album.
He wasn't unappreciated at all. He was lead singer for Petra for 20+ years. I love this guys vocals. He helped bring Rocknroll to Christians. Way back then we hardly had any. After he left HeadEast he was called to play for Petra. If you look it up or jjust listen to the all famous NEVER BEEN ANY REASON you will see his John Schlit Testimony. You will like it. I will send you an example
People too often confuse the term "under-appreciated" for "un-appreciated". I wrote Under-Appreciated. Outside of a relatively small fanbase, the majority of rock fans know little more than Never Been Any Reason for his vocals, and they usually don't know his name. Everyone knows of Robert Plant, and Steve Perry, etc. Try the name John Schlitt among the average rock fan and get a blank stare. He HAS been appreciated - by Head East fans and Petra fans, but we are a relative minority.
Possibly the best under-appreciated vocalist ever in rock music. Seems mostly mid-westerners know Head East, but I had this album in the late '70s on the east coast. This haunting song bit me at the time in my life when I first was falling for girls. One of them ended up with my Head East album! This really brings back memories.
I was in a group of 5 guys that played "Get Up And Enjoy Yourself" at our high school graduation in 1980. I saw Head East the next year at the tri-cities raceway near Richland, WA. It hit 105 degrees that day and the fire crew doused the crowd to keep us cool standing on the hot asphalt. Awesome show! I would love to see these guys come back to the Northwest someday. Rock on Head East fans.....
I agree with perryness..... John is as great as Steve Perry but he gave up extreme stardome for being a star for God. I'd listen to whatEVER kind of music he sings. He's chosen. Please anybody send me Dance Away lover video. I grew up with H.E. but never so lucky to have seen them and I live in the midwest. I remember seeing posters posted in 70's for concerts... KICKING MYSELF
It's kind of funny...I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan and I get into stupid dicussion as to who the greatest rock/metal singers of all time are. People mention Halford, Dickinson, Dio, Bach...etc. I think John Schlitt is one of the greatest of all time. He should be high up on the list with all the great legendary frontmen. most metal fans don't even know who he is. It's a shame.
Yeah, I agree with you DontTazerMeBro: John Schlitt could have been as big as Steve Perry or bigger! His voice is awesome! But I'm glad he became a Christian.
John Schlitt is my all time favorite singer next to Steve Perry. His voice is AMAZING, and I was really impressed with how his voice sounded perfect live when I got to see him with Petra here in Brazil a few years ago.
Songs makes me weep...epic Day and night, sittin' alone Wonderin' where you've been goin' In my mind I can see your face And the love that I thought it was showin' Didn't know it was all a mask And my love wasted devotion Now I'm here and you're somewhere else Dancin' with another's emotion, another's emotion I remember the night you captured my soul And the mind of my own, I lost all control I knew I had seen you before In so many of my dreams
Thnks for the lyrics..I saw this group so .so many times in my day...man! they were a good musicians...tight! just crappy management! John S...man what a voice!
you know he hit every note in concert too! damn! i wish they would have made it bigger then they did..I grew up in the midwest..so saw them alot in my day...
Grew up in Nebraska and Head East played all over the area and ended with the original lineup in there last show at Kearney STate College in Kearney, NE had the honor of meetin and greetin them on Campus that day...but nobody knew it was there last show till later on in the press reported it.
damn!! this guy had great vocals!!! saw them at there last concert with original lineup ..way back in 1979....at KEarney st. college, in Kearney,NE wow!!! damn!
Absolutely terrific song! I had this on vinyl, the old yellow sign/arrows lp.
Can someone help me find another Head East song? The lyrics I can remember are:
I Remember All The Fun We Had...
Anyone?

Head East was the first concert I'd ever attended - back in 1978 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. I was 15. The warm-up band was Cheap Trick.

To me, he sounds more like Boston's Brad Delp with a little bit of Styx. It's a good thing!

Like the dreams you danced away
Leaving only visions for me
Of the dance away
Dance away lover
Leading me on every step of the way
You called the tune and you used it well
You danced away and you left me here
Oh dance away, dance away lover, lover, lover, dance away.

Oh dance away, dance away lover, lover, lover, dance away
