Its best not to convert to a mesh to extrude. Head for the editing panel and look under Curve and Surface for extrude that will extrude a live curve and well and bevel it. Plus on a side note forget 'E' for each new node just hold down CTRL and click on the screen it'll automatically add a extra node.
