My first tattoo was on my right rib cage. Is about the size of my hand. I'm 15 and it was extremely painful at first, but towards the end I just wanted to fall asleep. It's not as bad as you think. But not a great spot for your first tattoo.

I think it depends from person to person, I had my tattoo done yesterday over my spine, and it starts in my neck. But I hardly felt anything.. Most of the times you want a tattoo done, you've already decided on a spot, so changing it because it would be too painful is kinda weird..

i wanted it on my ankle then got scared and was gonna switch to my thigh simply for pain...best decision i made was to suck it up and do it. it really wasn't that bad (for me at least), and I didn't compromise my vision of the art I wanted on my body. looking back i would have been really disappointed to have it on my thigh just because it hurt less. it is worth the temporary pain! Yes I winced but now whenever I look down at my ankle I smile because I chose a tattoo that means something to me!

I'm thinking of getting a tattoo and I'm not so scard of the pain because I tend to take pain well for some reason but I'm ridiculously ticklish and that's what scars me. I can just see being part way through a tattoo when the tattoo artists touches me in a ticklish spot and I jump. Is there anything I can do about that?

i have both feet, side of my neck, kneecaps, chest, wrists (full sleeves) and they didnt actually hurt that much, the side of my feets yes, but besides that i was chatting and laughing. you just have to tune it out really. i only get irritated if i sit for 4+ hours then my body just says OK enough, besides that the specific spots dont bother me at all.

My opinion? If you REALLY want the tattoo, it shouldnt matter how much it hurts.

You shouldnt change your placement and decision on what you want that will last forever on something such as a temporary pain...

Really it just depends on your pain tolerance. When he started i was just jamming and when he started shading around my hipbone thats when i started biting down on a towel...

Got my first one done on my ribs a while back, decently sized piece, hurt so bad it made my toes curl but it's not unbearable. First 20 minutes were very intense and then I just kinda zoned out and it wasn't so bad. Having a stress ball to squeeze and a friend to bring your exhausted self home also helps. Pain is temporary, if you want a tattoo somewhere then go for it.

@han91166 i have the side of my middle finger tattooed, and it huuuuurts! the skin on your fingers is pretty thin, so it's not the most pleasant. it's definately worth it if it's something you want, but it really depends on your pain tolerance too. for MOST people it hurts, but there are a few that say they felt nothing. and when getting a finger tattoo, be aware that you need several touch-up throughout the course of your life, since you use your fingers every day, and it fades quicker.

@ioka2008 Hi, I got my first tattoo on my inner forearm, running from my wrist to my inner elbow. It didn't hurt that much, a cat scratching sunburn is the best way I can describe it. I think your wrist is a good place to start with your first tattoo but that's just my opinion. My second was on my spine and that hurt like you wouldn't believe! Said to myself afterwards that I will never get a tattoo again but here I am now...considering my third! hahaha :) Good Luck, you'll be fine!

If you want a tattoo and youve thought hard about whether you'll like your choice down the road then get it... the pain is temporary and when its done its done ... its like sitting on a long bus ride.. it sucks in the process but it wont matter when you get to your destination

During the tattoo bump some loud music and distract yourself, look at things on the wall and focus on taking deep breaths through your stomach instead of in your chest .. "cheap tats arent good and good tats arent cheap"

i got mine by my right hip last evening. for the first minute or so i was inhaling and exhaling like a mainiac. my tattooist, Mike, told to loosen up and i found that if you inhale slowly [at least 5secs] and exhaling [at least 5secs] that it really helps. however, it did hurt more on my lower hip since i'm skinny. so what i did was shut my eyes inhale and exhale while count numbers very fast in my head. find a method thats will help you relieve the pain and you should be fine.
