Those aren't caterpillars those are sawfly larva. They're related to bees and wasps and the larva feed on conifers.

I had the same experience with caterpillars on a small evergreen shrub outside my front door earlier this summer - appeared to be about 300 or so caterpillars on several branches of the shrub. Creeped me out, but was totally fascinating at the same time.
