Mark Knopfer used to be lead guitar in my mate Tony's group. Cafe Racers. They played at a pub called I think the KIng's Head. I took photos at the time and another friend made a recording of them, unfortunately I can't find the photos but I do remember Mark in dungerees playing a fantastic guitar.

29th January 1978, Leicester Polytechnic, Dire Straits supported Climax Blues Band. I was helping the bands set up in the afternoon when these Geordies sound checked with "Sultans of Swing" and "Down by the waterline". I'd never heard of them, and still remember turning to Roger Ringwood (social sec) and suggesting they definitely had something! Awesome gig, and seeing this brings it all back. Was anyone else at that show all those years ago? . Bless all who appreciate true musical quality.

The little studio versions of this track like the Grey Whistle Test version are much better and more intimate than the over-the-top stadium arena versions with things like horns in them. For tracks like Brothers in Arms, yes, for little pub numbers like this one, intimacy is key.
