  • Mark Knopfer used to be lead guitar in my mate Tony's group. Cafe Racers. They played at a pub called I think the KIng's Head. I took photos at the time and another friend made a recording of them, unfortunately I can't find the photos but I do remember Mark in dungerees playing a fantastic guitar.

  • yeah heavy vet! sultans of swing... ....I often think : this could be the father off cris martin from coldplay... Dire straits so good ..Die gitaar gaat goed!

  • nice job indeed

  • I'm JUST a litte bit to young to remember "The Old Grey Whistle Test" but just to put it into perspective...........great great bands appearing on a weekly basis on terrestrial televesion?......

    Fuckin superb.

  • WAS BESSERES GIBT ES NICHT!!!!!

  • go get em mark knopfler

  • 4:40 ..... Yeah!!!

  • To think this was during the height of the punk movement.

  • such a great chord progression

  • 29th January 1978, Leicester Polytechnic, Dire Straits supported Climax Blues Band. I was helping the bands set up in the afternoon when these Geordies sound checked with "Sultans of Swing" and "Down by the waterline". I'd never heard of them, and still remember turning to Roger Ringwood (social sec) and suggesting they definitely had something! Awesome gig, and seeing this brings it all back. Was anyone else at that show all those years ago? . Bless all who appreciate true musical quality.

  • @professorfirestick close. I was 4 years old, when this song hit AM radio. it was my Year in Rock. that same year saw the debut of Van Halen produced by Gene Simmons

  • lol uncopyable solo

  • la suoneria di me cumpari vicè

  • this song

is the story of the music

  • best live version. knocks the socks off the Basle 92 version

  • As magnificent as Knopler was and is, I always felt "the Ventures" like rhythm guitar was a huge part of the early Dire Straits.

  • Best ever!!!!

  • Esse cara toca pra karamba e essa musica é muuito boa , aindo vou conseguir tocar ela toda na guitarra (y)

  • Increible!

  • parece meu sobrinho mateus tocando.

  • iranian revolution was 1979. my wife is born 1979. this song is recorded 1979. what a historical fusion! good song, good wife, fuck mullahs!

  • The little studio versions of this track like the Grey Whistle Test version are much better and more intimate than the over-the-top stadium arena versions with things like horns in them. For tracks like Brothers in Arms, yes, for little pub numbers like this one, intimacy is key.

  • One of the best songs of all time hands down. Mark knopler can shred on the guitar

  • @TheRickdog22

He has no use for a plectrum that's why. Plectrums ruin the tone and makes simultaneous elements impossible. Jimmy Page pitched his plectrum for a lot of songs as well.

  • @AugustusLarch HUH??? I said the song kicks ass i have no idea what yer talking about

  • Damn Mark was so skinny back then. Also, look at his hair. LOL

  • musica é 10, demais

  • 5 Isnogood's disliked

  • His brother was a great rhythm player which often gets overlooked ....like the great Tom Fogerty ....the rhythm allows someone like Mark to wail !!!

  • @gregorylee888 I couldn't agree more. David is a fantastic!

  • Fuck Mark Knopfler is so hot i can't explain

i almost come every time i see him

  • This song is just too good !:)

  • THESE GUYS JUST PLAIN ROCK IT OUT

EVEN THOUG THEY LEFT A FULL VERSE OUT OF THIS

  • without doubt in my opinion Mark Knopfler is the worlds best guitarist and all without a pick.

  • Oh shit !!! i jizz in my pants :O !!!

  • 1978.

  • Real good song.

  • Canada wants to censor Dire Straights song Money for Nothing! Apparently, someone complained it was offensive to gays.

  • @groam6666 yeah but at the same time 92 CITI FM a winnipeg manitoba canada based radio provider refuses to play the censored version branding it absurd... because it is simply not true to the original song. canada doesn't want to censor the awesome song, power hungry music ruiners do.

    propaganda blows, dire straits rule

    end of story

  • @groam6666 cos fagots is mentioned init lol

  • Is that Jerry Seinfeld singing?

  • @CHANEL97 I think its Mark Knopfler

  • nice

  • I love this song, the guitar is so cool

  • Elegant Fingerpicking with one of the best singing vibratos- up there with BB. I have been working on this with my axe for too long but a classic from a true master -well worth learning.

  • @Dendrite55 Man, I can exaclty understand you mean, and I can tell you what I feel after years: It´s hard. He has a wonderful attack... I´m wondering how he handles the vol...

  • this has to be the coolest song ever

  • fantastic song of late 70's

    the master of guitar

  • rimane la miglior canzone

  • no comment ! awesome

  • @samy1380 awesome is a comment lol

    but you are right

  • @samy1380 I agree. However, technically - awsome is actually a comment! ")

  • It is so cool to here Mark hit a dead note at 3.34 what is now recognized as maybe the most famous note bend in the entire song. But to me the strange part of this materpiece was really the drums.. thanks for keepin in human Mark !!

  • @MonksonMotorbikes No kidding about the drums.

But really, sure he hits a dead note, but do you call that guitar playing "keeping it human?" Regardless of dead notes this has to be one of the most spectacular songs, as far as guitar playing goes, imho :)

  • it is from 1978 not from 1979 :P

just read the title at the beginning!!!

  • FANTASTIC SONG

    CLASSIC SONG OF 79'S

    GUITAR GOD

  • Great version, great energy, killer tone from Mark. I wonder if this song is a homage to the Dukes of Dixieland (as well as a parody of Dire Straits themselves)?

  • listen to how all the other instruments fall into mk's guitar playing so precise. no other song does that. this is by far the most melodic song out there. i think mk surpassed music and is one of the best guitar players ever and is not impressed by those that think he is.
