Hi can anyone help me? i need an opinion on my Fender Stratocaster with Floyd Rose Made in Japan 1990 also some information of what kind of woods is made of and electronics, it is a I Series
the current jap strats are definitely made better and have a better sound. BUT! NEVER BUY A VINTAGE JAPANESE STRAT!!!! THEY SUCK AND ARE SOOO CHEAPLY MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Deadmau5dubstep Some of the best strats ever made come from the JV (Japan Vintage Line). Heck, even the Squier strats from 82-84 are often considered superior to the USA strats of today.
Usually japanese fender have better craftsmanships, but I'd say the stock US pickup is still better. The only reason this fender japan sounds better is because of the dimarzio pickup.
But I'd still buy the Fender Japan and get the PU replaced... this would be my ultimate guitar
Japanese Fender and export Squier JV Strats (1982 / 84); Very accurate Japan vintage replicas, with Fullerton USA red, grey bobbin plain wire (inc X-1...early) and black bobbin cloth wired pickups (late '82 on).
Domestic ST-115 models are nitro finished with Fullerton USA hardware and pickguard assemblies (all USA parts!)......The ultimate pre-CBS Strat replica!.....Very sought after!
I've a japanese strat '62 RI made in 1991. I own it for a couple of mounth and to me before I swapped the pickups it sounded thin and harsh. Now it features Bare Knuckle pickups "Series L" RI and that guitar is a real dream.
I own a bunch of both. Both have dogs (90's strat standards) but generally attention to detail and build quality is better on Japs vs some usa strats. The strat plus is an exception and the new usa standard strats. The new usa special is a piece of poop, the high end mexi's easily blow them away. The E series Jap strats are pretty equal to a good strat plus, same feel, weight etc. Change ALL the electronics on MOST Jap strats and youve got a winner. Check string alignment vs the dots on both..
@joshuanaconda despite it having dimarzio pickups they still are loads cheaper than an american strat (not to mention gotoh tuners). for me at least, this comparison was about what you get for your money between these 2 options. i sold my american standard after i got a 92 standard japanese strat (no dimarzio pups). it was less than half the price (around 300usd).
You should have tested them clean not through such a distorted and muffled amp. It would be better to hear the resonance, string seperation and sustain. That test doesn't prove anything. A word of advice when doing an A & B comparison should play exactly the same notes for both to compare fairly.
for me the sound of the strato us is mor brightnes at diference tha the japanis is more colored for me soun better the japanis and the japanis is the same quality of the american and in a period of time the japanis stratos was build in usa becos one plant in japan caught fire sorry but my bad english
How can you say the USA made is better build quality!? I gave up on US made guitars because the Japanese ones blow away the hit and miss US quality control. I know both worlds very well and trust me, the Japanese Strat is impeccable in build quality. They, unlike the US, have serious QC standards.
this is in regards to the 3 phrases or chord progression in the vid.
1st part U.S. wins
2nd part Japan wins
3rd part is a tie but here's the thing, that's my preference on what sounded best FOR ME in relation to the lick or progression YOU played... bottom line, its apples and oranges, you could've compared either to a Gibson les paul and would have gotten the same subjective comments..and the behringer didnt help much either...they are 2 different beasts, so treat them that way :)
@mattsuzo Yeh i agree with you...i bought a 71 reissue tele japan...Wow it plays fantastic..I also picked up a custom shop USA tele with a $4.500 price tag today and it felt just the same to play...You got to hand it to the Japanese they make one hell of a good guitar..At less than half the price with amazing good quality
I have a black 1988 "MIJ" that I bought brand new. Structurally it is right on par with the American strats if not better. The original electronics were on the cheaper side, mainly the pickups. They had the dummy pole pieces with the magnet glued to the bottom. I've replaced the pickguard, pots and installed Seymour Duncan Classic Strat Stacks and the guitar is a killer.
conclusion is fujigen manufactures the best sounding guitars period. and this is proof they even out do the legendary fenders at manufacturing there own guitars. this is proof. fujigen manufactures the the japanese version. yes usa did manufacture fenders first and 20-40 years ago they were the best but fujigen has been manufacturing big guitar companies especially ibanez and even here they prove to be the best in tone. why not get a prestige ibanez now they dominate fender.
Im currently shopping for another (used) JPN strat. My current JPN strat has a 2PC ash body, vintage pups. Plays nice but its a little bright. Im currently aiming at a DMC model (collaboration FJP/DIMARZ). Its got plenny beef. The vintage ash one, great cleans, but she dont crunch much. Then again, thats not what the vintage pups were wound for. so between the vintage cleans and the DMC crunch, I should be OK.
Would be nice to have a comparison of clean tones. The American strat has a much clearer tone in these clips, most obvious in the second one. I wouldn't call it 'thin', just...clearer. But 2.5 times the price? I think not.
The pickups and wood are effectively identical, the only real difference is the stainless usa trem which gives it more highs. straight through a good amp the jap strat will have it, just, but its very subjective.
I agree. I've always agree. This whole "All American is the way to go" shit gets on my nerves. Sure when it comes to distributing & having a Korean or Indonesian made guitar sold in America, may not be good, but they can be just as good. As long as it's made by good wood & has the right pickups & hardware, it's all good from any country.
I own both a 90's US American Standard Strat and 93 Jap. Fat Strat. I love both. For classic warm single coil sounds I play the US Fender. But my favorite guitar is my Jap Strat. Since it got a floyd rose, maple neck and PRS Dragon Treble pickups. Its all just a matter of taste.
The thing I hate on my Jap Strat it came with cheap electronics. The 5way switch "YM-50" problem. Solution is replace it with a US Fender 5way switch. I never had problems ever since.
I have both USA and Japan, then a mexico squire. Oh and a american made Tele that is old, but redid the body. When I am playing them it is easy to hear and feel the difference to me. Although the japan and the USa are very much a like. Still there is difference. I love he USa a tad more. But have to admit the Japan strat with that difference in sound and play, Still has its roll in my music. SO songs it just sounds better to me with.
He cant tell the difference because you could plug a turd into an effects box and then into a computer. Plug them into a real amp and you will hear the difference. Give me a break.
American has more openess to the sound, like a Strat should sound. . however the Japanese sounds very good in it's own rite. . I could live with either, but prefer the openess of the American version a bit better.
both are amazing.....i own a mij strat and a mia strat, they are diferent instruments, you can't compare. You could get an awesome mia strat or a very weak one as they are the most unpredictable instrument ever made, that's what make them unique. On the other hand, mij strat are always excellent, japanese guys don't mess around, they know how to do it. You have to try out a lots of mia strat to find one to justify the price against a mij one....that simple.
come on man you can't tell the difference...I have strat MIJ and telecaster USA, although USA has a better sustain, japanese is killing him in every other aspect. Google and you'll see that japanese made fenders from 82. - 85. are considered to be the best serial fenders ever made from that period till present day, not included custom shops and some special designes
The USA strat definitely sounded better to my ears. A lot more brilliant and clear sound opposed to the more muddy sound of the MIJ strat. I actually prefer Japanese guitars in general because of the better craftsmanship but I do believe the USA one sounded better in this video.
Are the pickups the same in both guitars? I bet there note. From my experience ripping out the stock pickups and throwing in some Seymour Duncan's works wonders!
as someone who doesn't have neither a jap or usa strat i can say, that although their quality is probably comparable, the usa strat sounded brighter in this vid, that's why i liked it more.
I've played both Jap and US strats. I don't like the US standards or Deluxes even as they sound less colorful tonally than the Jap guitars. The pups are better too imo and the overall construction and finsish of the Japs is awesome! The Jap necks are a dream to play with their 7.5" radius being very comfy and the thicker 'c' profile makes for cool playing indeed. I play a '57 and a '62 from Japan and they blow the US models away in every dept. 500 dollars new 300 on ebay 2nd hand. A Bargain!
mia is clearer and brighter, while mij is not actually muddy, but has a thicker sound than mia.. both are good btw.. and with very little difference in sound, i think i'll go with les paul, i mean fender, yeah fender japan considering the price is less than half of mia.
i have 2 fender japan floyd rose series strat(1993-1994 series). and i use to own an amercan standard, the japanese versions are better! checkout my profile. you can hear the audio of the fender japan, some live performances too. thanks
whats whith jap fender strat, i know they are cheap, but if you really like japanese guitars, buy ibanez or esp. the quality of those brand is better than the japanese version strat.
plus, if u want to get a strat, get a fat strat, buy a american stander model.
"Fender guitar's price is you pay what you get" please remember this, specially stop wasting your money on those bloody squeir
USA strats are too overrated..and im not just saying that to be a hater. I have payed japan squiers that are better quality than todays usa strats. All you really get is the brand FENDER USA
dude u should have made a demo of the Japanese strat with stock pickups like the American. still, we all know Japanese strats are better in every way any day, regardless if ur comparing it to an American as long as they're the same type of guitar i.e. Japanese Standard Strat vs. American Standard Strat, Japanese Custom vs. American Custom, etc
The usa sounded bit brighter sometimes. Of course its pointless comparing these two. I believe its the same thing comparing Jap Jackson with Usa Jackson, pickups and hardware are the same, but the constraction and wood quality is better in the USA version IN DEED!
Untrue, the neck construction is superior in the Japanese Jackson Kelly (in terms of choice, not quality which is pretty even).
The neck for the US Kelly is neck-thru with an ebony fretboard.
The Japanese Kelly has rosewood and bolt-on.
Ebony and neck-thru is a bad mix because ebony dries out quicker, if your fretboard dries out then your frets can pop out slightly and give you horrible fret-buzz, the only way to fix is to replace the neck which is a hassle due to neck-thru construction.
So your comparing a jap strat with dimarzio pickups compared to a stock USA strat? Pretty pointless, considering you're only playing through a distorted tone, of course the japanese strat will sound better...
but i live in canada consider buying a same thing from japan would cost me more than just buy one in america, but whatever you do dont buy squier by fender. because some squier's espeical those chinese made ones, are made from plywood and glued!!! not a solid piece of rosewood or maple
Completely not true. Only squier guitar that are made of plywood are the new bullet series, not the old japan bullets which kick ass. However newer squiers can never compare to older squiers. In conclusion don't by a NEW squier if you are looking for fender quality
I own a japanese silver series one (not squier, FENDER).
The guitar+2 dimarzio = less money than an american strat and an awesome tone. Believe me, they are worth buying. The tone isnt better or worse, thats only taste, but this silver series are awesome, and perfectly made.
I own a Japanese Fender Photflame from the mid 90's. I haven't played a better Fender whether it was a USA or Mexican made model. I'm American and wish to say the USA models are better but I can't. I think the USA 2008 models have finally come up to speed though. They may give the Japanese models a run for their money. The Mexican models have become good but they are not as good as the USA models and for certain not even close to the Japanese models.
The japan Fender guitar sounds better and has more 3D dimensional sound that what all guitar players with soul and great ear are looking for. USA quality is really bad these days just stick with MIJ guitars and you will sound way better.
I thought the USA model sounded very thin almost tinny! American made Fender guitars are not the quality that they used to be. I use MIJ Fender models in preference because they are consistently better players than the American models. MIJ Fenders from 80's are the next collectible guitars to own.
To me the Japs sounds fuller while USA has more high and brighter. It's very hard to compare on 'Apple to Apple' basis coz differences in type of pickups used and setup. But overall, i think nowadays Japs has more consistant in terms of quality control on the built quality than USA. The best Japs strats are from 80's...anytime can beat USA in that era.
Unless you have access to a late 50's or early 60's strat from Fender USA you will never know how they should sound. Most guitars from USA or Mexico today will sound OK unless you want to play through a valve amp and go for a pure tone then wow what a dissapointment. IMHO Jap strats from the mid 1980's cannot be bettered in terms of playability and the sound is very very close to 60's originals.I rate mid 80's MIJ strats as a direct replacement to a real vintage strat.
the sound might be the same, but in terms of neck balance, frets, body finish and what u may have on a fender jap, never found any problems at all. just tried a fender usa tele today, very bad neck, very uneven. i rem in the 90s when i was using fender usa they were so so good. but lately just has not been so. I appeal to fender USA to shape up and pls continue the good old tradition of producing that good and awesome guitar that we all come to love. i have always been a fender fan n no other.
well lately fender america has stop fender japan from importing out of japan becos of recent sales dropping on the fender american ones, why? cos fender makes far better quality guitar n their workmanship is so much far better than what the usa ones are having now. and in terms of price they are unbeatable. to balance that up, fender japan is being made to stop importing guitars out which is so not fair. personally i think if fender usa takes pride in what they do, better wake up and match up.
Well the key differnece here is the cost. Of corse they will have sound quality variance because of the amout of money put into the guitar. 168,000 yen adds up to about 1600 bucks, and 69,300 yen adds up to about 700 bucks, its twice as much! you cand do that, its not fare or equal to the guitars themselves to put their dignaty and honor on the line you know?
i think with little upgrade you'll get better tune and sustain, that's what i'm plan to do , lol i love my mex strat
as for this comparison it looks like japan Made Excellent custom strat here .. i really like fender japan ,it's better than mexican made after all , Yet Some American Strats have 2 point synchronized Tremolo bridge which make them a very unique guitars
you can't say that the american guitars suck, is that why they are the most expensive, the majority of people favor american made guitars, that is just your opinion, i personally hate japan made guitars, but i am not going to flat out say they suck.
They both sound shit snd plastic

The japan made has Dimarzios on, while the american comes with the factory pickups
We all know that the biggest flaw on fender's, if you want to play with overdrive, are the doll factore made pickups
I have hade both and the difference is HUGE in favor of the American one
way heavir wood, more tone, just feals real.

Great test. . for the first time I get to hear the guitars and not have to hear a lot of nonsense talk. . well done!

what do u think of a jap tele '71 reissue
(i love jap necks)
flushcake 2 years ago
both are amazing.....i own a mij strat and a mia strat, they are diferent instruments, you can't compare.

The USA sounded clearer to me than the MIJ one. Oh well.
sooperkula 2 years ago
come on man you can't tell the difference...I have strat MIJ and telecaster USA, although USA has a better sustain, japanese is killing him in every other aspect. Google and you'll see that japanese made fenders from 82. - 85. are considered to be the best serial fenders ever made from that period till present day, not included custom shops and some special designes
sonrisingpk 2 years ago
The USA strat definitely sounded better to my ears. A lot more brilliant and clear sound opposed to the more muddy sound of the MIJ strat. I actually prefer Japanese guitars in general because of the better craftsmanship but I do believe the USA one sounded better in this video.
caboose1289 3 years ago
from experience...i like the japan better. Especially the neck!
erikchavez831 3 years ago
la fender usa ha un suono più limpido, mentre quella japan ce l'ha più cupo
jacopo594 3 years ago
Are the pickups the same in both guitars? I bet there note. From my experience ripping out the stock pickups and throwing in some Seymour Duncan's works wonders!
kyral210 3 years ago
as someone who doesn't have neither a jap or usa strat i can say, that although their quality is probably comparable, the usa strat sounded brighter in this vid, that's why i liked it more.
Wilq59r 3 years ago
I've played both Jap and US strats. I don't like the US standards or Deluxes even as they sound less colorful tonally than the Jap guitars. The pups are better too imo and the overall construction and finsish of the Japs is awesome! The Jap necks are a dream to play with their 7.5" radius being very comfy and the thicker 'c' profile makes for cool playing indeed. I play a '57 and a '62 from Japan and they blow the US models away in every dept. 500 dollars new 300 on ebay 2nd hand. A Bargain!

because you are not an american who cares about our workers....why don't u move to japan then
AiLD2 3 years ago
mia is clearer and brighter, while mij is not actually muddy, but has a thicker sound than mia.. both are good btw.. and with very little difference in sound, i think i'll go with les paul, i mean fender, yeah fender japan considering the price is less than half of mia.

i have 2 fender japan floyd rose series strat(1993-1994 series). and i use to own an amercan standard, the japanese versions are better! checkout my profile. you can hear the audio of the fender japan, some live performances too. thanks
jeffreydecastro420 3 years ago
whats whith jap fender strat, i know they are cheap, but if you really like japanese guitars, buy ibanez or esp. the quality of those brand is better than the japanese version strat.
plus, if u want to get a strat, get a fat strat, buy a american stander model.
"Fender guitar's price is you pay what you get" please remember this, specially stop wasting your money on those bloody squeir

Nothing is compared to an American Fender Strat
I own an American '92 Fender Strat Standard and is a great guitar (right now i'm upgrading the microphones to Texas Special)
nothing can beat this guitar in clean sounds...
not a Gibson Les Paul, not a gibson 335, not a Parker, not a PRS... nothing can beat the American Strat clean sound
see ya!!
keep rocking!

USA strats are too overrated..and im not just saying that to be a hater. I have payed japan squiers that are better quality than todays usa strats. All you really get is the brand FENDER USA
erikchavez831 3 years ago
The japanese is obviously better , like the other guy said the usa strt is too thin. JAPANESE STRATS ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!
royaltrucks1 3 years ago 6
@royaltrucks1 it's pretty clear the japanese is better!!! I have a st62 that puts the amrican standard to shame

i love Japanese guitars but it's not fair comparing one having upgraded pickups to stock pickups. anyway, please READ my comment below.
MarijuanaGood4U 3 years ago
dude u should have made a demo of the Japanese strat with stock pickups like the American. still, we all know Japanese strats are better in every way any day, regardless if ur comparing it to an American as long as they're the same type of guitar i.e. Japanese Standard Strat vs. American Standard Strat, Japanese Custom vs. American Custom, etc
MarijuanaGood4U 3 years ago
The usa sounded bit brighter sometimes. Of course its pointless comparing these two. I believe its the same thing comparing Jap Jackson with Usa Jackson, pickups and hardware are the same, but the constraction and wood quality is better in the USA version IN DEED!
greecekostkon 3 years ago
Untrue, the neck construction is superior in the Japanese Jackson Kelly (in terms of choice, not quality which is pretty even).
The neck for the US Kelly is neck-thru with an ebony fretboard.
The Japanese Kelly has rosewood and bolt-on.
Ebony and neck-thru is a bad mix because ebony dries out quicker, if your fretboard dries out then your frets can pop out slightly and give you horrible fret-buzz, the only way to fix is to replace the neck which is a hassle due to neck-thru construction.
windowmaker90 3 years ago
So your comparing a jap strat with dimarzio pickups compared to a stock USA strat? Pretty pointless, considering you're only playing through a distorted tone, of course the japanese strat will sound better...

lsisro 3 years ago
anyways both of those stratocaster were good,
but i live in canada consider buying a same thing from japan would cost me more than just buy one in america, but whatever you do dont buy squier by fender. because some squier's espeical those chinese made ones, are made from plywood and glued!!! not a solid piece of rosewood or maple
jack99889988 3 years ago
Completely not true. Only squier guitar that are made of plywood are the new bullet series, not the old japan bullets which kick ass. However newer squiers can never compare to older squiers. In conclusion don't by a NEW squier if you are looking for fender quality
erikchavez831 3 years ago
JAPAN ALL THE WAY MAN!!!!!!!
USA ones are thrown together by hillbillies and trailer trash. Japanese one are crafted by perfectionists with OCD!

i own a white japan strat, bought 2nd hand for 350euro. it's frigging awesome :p
only the bridgepickup was a bit bad, so i put a seymour duncan hotrail in it :p
trashedlostandhungry 3 years ago

DTM1864 3 years ago
The japan Fender guitar sounds better and has more 3D dimensional sound that what all guitar players with soul and great ear are looking for. USA quality is really bad these days just stick with MIJ guitars and you will sound way better.
Kitarist88 3 years ago 4
I thought the USA model sounded very thin almost tinny! American made Fender guitars are not the quality that they used to be. I use MIJ Fender models in preference because they are consistently better players than the American models. MIJ Fenders from 80's are the next collectible guitars to own.

To me the Japs sounds fuller while USA has more high and brighter. It's very hard to compare on 'Apple to Apple' basis coz differences in type of pickups used and setup. But overall, i think nowadays Japs has more consistant in terms of quality control on the built quality than USA. The best Japs strats are from 80's...anytime can beat USA in that era.
neoh1977 3 years ago 2
Unless you have access to a late 50's or early 60's strat from Fender USA you will never know how they should sound. Most guitars from USA or Mexico today will sound OK unless you want to play through a valve amp and go for a pure tone then wow what a dissapointment. IMHO Jap strats from the mid 1980's cannot be bettered in terms of playability and the sound is very very close to 60's originals.I rate mid 80's MIJ strats as a direct replacement to a real vintage strat.
DAVEBLISS2007 3 years ago 4

the sound might be the same, but in terms of neck balance, frets, body finish and what u may have on a fender jap, never found any problems at all. just tried a fender usa tele today, very bad neck, very uneven. i rem in the 90s when i was using fender usa they were so so good. but lately just has not been so. I appeal to fender USA to shape up and pls continue the good old tradition of producing that good and awesome guitar that we all come to love. i have always been a fender fan n no other.
jessmankhor 3 years ago
well lately fender america has stop fender japan from importing out of japan becos of recent sales dropping on the fender american ones, why? cos fender makes far better quality guitar n their workmanship is so much far better than what the usa ones are having now. and in terms of price they are unbeatable. to balance that up, fender japan is being made to stop importing guitars out which is so not fair. personally i think if fender usa takes pride in what they do, better wake up and match up.
jessmankhor 3 years ago
perhaps the vamp made them no differences~
i guess ~
snoopyqd 3 years ago
Well the key differnece here is the cost. Of corse they will have sound quality variance because of the amout of money put into the guitar. 168,000 yen adds up to about 1600 bucks, and 69,300 yen adds up to about 700 bucks, its twice as much! you cand do that, its not fare or equal to the guitars themselves to put their dignaty and honor on the line you know?

i got an American made i love it but i dont know the difference between the two i heard American made ones are better idk

you can't say that the american guitars suck, is that why they are the most expensive, the majority of people favor american made guitars, that is just your opinion, i personally hate japan made guitars, but i am not going to flat out say they suck.
