Dogs can smell explosive on a molecular level and have been scienfically proven to do as good or better job than any technology we can come up with to do it. Send in the dogs as primary detectors. If people don;t like dogs, they got pat-downers and scanners all they like.
I don't agree with Rick on this one. As a guy, I can't care less if you take semi-naked pictures of me. But I do care if you take those pictures of my gf or (future) kids. This is a basic privacy issue, full body scanners have no place in our society. If we tolerate the scanners, be prepared to accept more privacy-invasive policies in the future. It is time for us to tell the government we are not sheep and we will fight back when our rights are violated.
@TensaZ Exactly, Why do Big politicans and CEO's always fly private and charter? These so called servants behave like aristocratic elite. THey make decisions most of us are against and tell us it's for our own good. We the people hold the power, if we embrace it. Instead we let people we "elect" make decisions for THEIR own good. Rick's is way off on this one. Terrorist's arent everywhere, so why is there over a million people on the watchlist? You know 90% of planes can be remote controlled?
I used to like Rick before this rant...I guess Rick believes in the American Patriot act and has Terrorist under his bed just waiting to attack .....lol.
@Sept11Discovery Yah, sure the country has made some enemies but they have to do their job. It may have been all a scam by bush to get oil but that doesn't mean that al qaeda is the only ones who are terrorist
@yomamasapeach are you joking....first, al qaeda is a creation of the USA, if it really exist at all...these terrorsit are supported by the CIA. America is the biggest terrorist state on earth.....you are aware of all their false flaggs through history....have you read 1984.....America is about perpetual war, if it is the War on communism, war on drugs, war on terror, it is all bullshit.....hopefully they can get Ron Paul elected.......stop getting your opionion from CNN and Fox
@Sept11Discovery Man, I am against the U.S, You know that a cia private jet carried tons of cocaine from colombia when found crashed and that al qaeda was supported by the us government and also supported the taliban to get rid of the soviets and supported weapons for iraq to hit iran. Don't get me wrong, the U.S is horrible, but people like the shoe bomber and some crazy people are the need. Also, don't forget the hijackings in the 80's and 90's like in algeria or in ethiopia.
@yomamasapeach ..yeah they get on the planes with the help of the CIA or FBI....the hijackers you mentioned would have been stopped at security if it wasn't for the spooks assistance....its just like in the 1950, it was said if all the FBI informants left the communist party, the communist party would have had 17 memebers..lol sad but true....they create the terror, than tell you they are protecting you....what a joke.
@Sept11Discovery but in all reality they don't. There has been too much security that there isn't more freedom but there are still reasons for security, maybe not body scanners or patdowns but metal detectors and x ray for luggage and carry on. Just look at air india or lockerbie, they both were the aftermath of too little security, TSA may be a joke, so is catsa and thats why they need to be more ready.
@yomamasapeach if you live in fear like you seem to do, the terrorist and the Nazi's win....go hide under you bed, I understand you are scared of the the big bad muslims or anybody who isn't white.
@yomamasapeach another thing, in the 1950's, a Canadian put a bomb on a plane and blew it out of the sky...how come Canada didn't freak out and start patting down 14 year old girls at the airport...???....and don't give me the Sept 11th bullshit....Becasue America did that to themselves.....Please look at Dr. Judy Wood's work on yourtube.
@Sept11Discovery Yet there was a mad bomber in new york who would blow up public places and America didn't freak out. The reason why airport security has been enhanced is because Bush wanted the people to be scared, and he wanted to make the country look like they are trying to protect themselves. The world is much more paranoid then when it was in the 50's. It is like saying because some theatres are bombed, to we put security in theatres? Thousands died in 9/11, and pissed off many.
now what i find funny... is the government makes the rules... but the government is the people.... so the people are persistantly bitching about the rules that we let ourselves put into place....?
Sheeple "sheep" and "people"The term is often used to denote persons who voluntarily acquiesce to a perceived authority figure's suggestion without critical analysis or sufficient research to understand the ramifications of that decision. By doing so, Sheeple undermine their own individuality and may willingly give up their rights. The implication of the term is that people fallaciously appeal to authority
In other words, the airports have to treat everybody like a potential terrorist threat because the people that are suppose to protect us don't know their asses from a hole in the ground. Great, I feel safe now.
@frozencanuckreviews really? Do *YOU* know some magic way of finding ANYONE who is planning to kill people on that plane you're about to board? Are you SOOO much better than the security staff that you insult? Are you a mind-reader?
Well, neither are they, so either they can assume the worst of all of us, and briefly annoy the innocent, or they can assume the best of all of us, and let the NEXT bomber or hijacker through.
...personally, I prefer to be a disappointed pessimist.
Honestly, I agree with him. People complain way too much about the body scanner.. I've been through it - it's not bad at all. I would rather everyone have to go through it than be on a flight with a terrorist
@72alexalexalex the radiation from the scanner causes cancer, thats the controversy behind them, and id rather not have the state start to assume everyone is a potential threat, that sets up a very volitile situation, bad vibes.
@mothman64 The scanner produces less radiation then a 2second call on your cell phone. It uses RADIOWAVES. Same thing that comes out of your speakers when you turn on your car. Get your learn on before you start regurgitating what you've heard from other people. I'd rather get some Health Canada approved radio waves bounce off me then end up on a plane with a guy that has explosives in his underwear. Just saying :)
@missusprettyface How about they people working around them constantly everyday. The airport security have the right to work in a safe environment, and not be exposed to radiation while on the job. There are already cases of airport security getting cancer, believed to be related to their workplace. If they all walked out one day, or refused to work in an unsafe environment, which is their right, It would not benefit anyone who flys. And adding any dose of radiation to what we get daily isntwise
@PredominateOne ...I AM the people working around them everyday. Screening officers are not exposed to radiation levels any higher than posted by Health Canada. We are informed of all the technologies and their radiation output. I'd rather work next to a body scanner for 8 hours a day than talk on a cell phone for 8 hours a day.... I'd also rather deal with the barely nothing radiation then touch up 1000 strangers a day. LESS RADIATION THAN 2 SECONDS ON YOU'RE CELL PHONE....
of course security in airports is important, and I do care about ensuring that all honest and well-meaning travellers get home safe and sound - only one has to face the fact that there is nothing quite 100% risk free in real life - therefore someone, somewhere, will always find a way to commit an attack, especially when an employee is asleep on the switch - also what next? if this trend continues shall we have to board the plane in our birthday suits?
@bourdon30 I had an idea a few years back with the Google 10^100 project: "Coma Class". Have people go into general anesthesia while being carried on a plane; a terrorist isn't gonna do nothing when medicated into unconsciousness.
Sure it wouldn't be effective for those little 50min commuter flights, and you'd need medical history screening for people with averse reactions to the anesthesia, but it'd make expenses like 'in-flight food and entertainment' moot...
@bourdon30 ...you could even market it to people as A CHANCE TO ACTUALLY REST - it'd probably help combat jet lag. (and some people, it'd be the first decent sleep they'd gotten in YEARS).
Stick all the luggage in the checked, have a doctor and a handful of nurses for cabin crew, and you'd also fit MORE people in the same amount of cabin space due to stacked cots.
...and you'd make any terrorist action MUCH more difficult.
Coma Class™ - ask your travel agent about it today. ;)
I disagree. Making it hard for the people running the scanners and doing the pat downs to do their jobs might lead to change sooner than the next election.
@TheTwistedGypsy We don't vote a Confederation in, we vote parties in, in order to represent our best interests, and to yes, protect our rights. Therefore when they do circumvent our rights, then people should vote for a different party that won't do that. You seem to think that I'm actually supporting the government doing this, but what I'm trying to say is maybe people should exercise their rights to vote, and bring a different party into power.
Sorry Rick, this is one rant I cannot agree with. A full body scan and/or "enhanced patdown" an unreasonable step to take. We are not americans and I don't see for one second the need to resort to this sort of draconian measure. The sad part is the The C's or Libs would lie down over this topic and we all know how hawkish Harper is on "security". well I for one perfer no to have my junk on display on a computer monitor or someone sneaking a feel of my fleshrocket before my plane without paying.
The only reason why more people aren't against the new TSA measures are because more people haven't been sexually assaulted. And telling them to suck it up is crass and insensitive.
@Steenhorst given statistics being what they are, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. Exactly how many MORE people do you feel NEED to be sexually assaulted so that the last barrier "against the new TSA measures," as you put it, will no longer be there? Are you seriously comparing a security pat -down to sexual assault? Or are you merely promoting sexual assault so people will know the difference?
@druidflower Okay, let's talk. I don't really understand what you mean. What I'm driving at is there is group A, who thinks that group B are a bunch of whining babies. Group B are assault survivors who are triggered by the enhanced pat-downs and group A... aren't. I'm saying that group A could use a little more sensitivity. What are you saying? I didn't say anything about barriers.
@Steenhorst I'm saying that it's extremely inappropriate to compare sexual assault to a security pat-down. my remark "barrier 'against the new tsa measures'" was written too fast on my part, but in spirit I meant to say it's never ever appropriate to imply that more people should be sexually assaulted so that they will be less tolerant of the tsa's new measures, thus creating a social backlash or barrier against them.
@druidflower Okay I see what you mean. Now, perhaps I didn't choose my words well, but I didn't mean to imply that more people should be sexually assaulted. That would be monstrous. I certainly hope most people didn't interpret my comment that way.
AHHHH come on Sheeple , WAKE UP.How many more rights are going to be stolen away before you care.......................They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Lets be honest here people. When it comes down to increased searching in airports, or an increased security threat while traveling what would you rather have? the assurance that because of this body scan you are less likely to be killed while flying? or avoiding the awkward 30 second pat down before boarding a plane. I have zero problem with anyone who wants to pat me down (for security reasons) or take an anonymous scan of my body if it means increased airport security
@oakster15 Except that it doesn't -- Israel has far more passive but more effective security, and we've seen time and again that anyone really determined to cause havoc here will find a way around these systems with enough practice and planning.
At least the searches are fairly mild here (if still useless and stupid). In the states, you're the victim of a sex crime every time you go into the airport.
@BoredomCorner I've gone through the "pat down" in an airport just recently. It was a non-event. I was not traumatized nor did I lose my freedom. There are many things we are make to do that we really don't like (pay taxes to governments that we did not vote for, buy house insurance so we can get a mortgage even though we know they will fight tooth and nail to avoid a pay out) but life is full of that. I am trying to point out that perhpas we need to sweat the big stuff.
@jkzl1008 It's a slippery slope, first their touching your genitals because they dont believe in the concept of innocent until proven guilty, then their interfereing in all aspects of the citizens life, look at what the tsa wants to do in the states, check points at all points of travel and commerce, including high school proms for fucks sake, and if harper follows through with the spp, and he will, then our laws and regulations will be in harmony with the insanity going on within the usa.
@jkzl1008 Go to the USA and try to fly, they pat you down, feel up your genitals, they do the same to children, and wife, It's disgusting. And absolutely no needed. If pat downs worked, the underwear bomber never would made it on the plane. Funny that the FB scanners came out "in response" to that incident, even though Chertof ordered them before hand. WOW where is he now? working for the company that created them. Not to mention the massive radiation these machines leak. Enjoy the police state!
I'm sorry, but wtf is everyone crying about? its a anonymous nude body scan that just shows if u have anything sticking out that isnt normal, its not the front cover of a porn magazine. If some dude is jerking off beside the monitor, okay fire the pervert, theres nothing wrong with the policy.
@gordonf4yt It's the dudes in the rubber gloves who choose to be that heavy-handed about them. Being a front-line worker does not excuse a lack of judgment.
@BoredomCorner Overzealous guards need to be complained about. Only one time has that ever happened to me at any kind of security checkpoint. That lady lost her job after.
I've only experienced professionalism at the checkpoints since then, and I've been around, even to Seoul once.
I'll defend Rick's right to say what he says. Isn't that called free speech where you're from?
@BoredomCorner Free speech allows you to say what you want, but it doesn't make you right. You can SAY someone is wrong, like Rick or like someone else on here, but it doesn't mean your opinion is more correct than anyone else's. And whether or not you're allowed to say it, you still can get people mad. Don't hide behind rules, back yourself up with facts.
Like the fact that I'll just keep myself on the ground or buy a private jet. If we get mad at anyone, we should make it someone in power.
Our common mans champion of our rights and the need for common sense has just relagated the CHARTER OF RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS to the if ya don't like it, lump it pile. A sad day for what was a voice for the common man :,-(
@TheTwistedGypsy I think his point was to deal with it when you're actually going through security, because security can't really do anything about it. He didn't say anything about not standing up for our rights against the government that makes the rules
@mysterygirl154 "He didn't say anything about not standing up for our rights against the government that makes the rules."
well there's some convoluted logic. How can, and why would, we allow them to "make the rules" as you say that ARE AN INFRINGEMENT ON OUR RIGHTS. The governments FIRST OBLIGATION TO THE PEOPLE< IS TO PROTECT THOSE RIGHTS AT ALL COSTS. Living in Freedom is a dangerous proposition. But the alternative, IE: tyranny is even scarier.
@TheTwistedGypsy We vote for them, that's what allows them to "make the rules". If people are so upset about what the government is doing then maybe the 40% of people who didn't vote at the last election should do so.
@mysterygirl154 maybe you should study a little bit on what a Confederation, under a Constitution, and Bill Of Rights is. We vote them in with the express intent and purpose to follow those Documents. No were do they have the right to circumvent it. As it Clearly states. Perhaps you are thinking of another country like China or Iran, or N. Korea. Certainly not about CANADA>
It's nice to actually hear this rant! I recorded RMR on Tuesday but it goofed and the first half wasn't in HD. Right when the rant came on it switched to HD but the sound went off! Good going CBC ;)
I don't really agree with Rick in principle, but, just went through security at Pearson yesterday, and it was probably the most shocking experience I've ever had with airport security: everyone on staff was smiling, friendly, polite and even called me by name, all while still being extremely thorough. I think if this was standard, it would be a lot easier to pick out people who are anxious because they have a bomb in their trousers and not anxious about being treated like cattle on $2000 flight.
@FuriousRoellinghoff Agreed -- I was so intimidated going through Pearson to Las Vegas that I honestly thought I was going to get arrested just because I had a camera on me.
Yeah, it makes sense. Take it up with the MP, not the guy having to do it. Still, as far as I'm aware (and I may be wrong) all cases of bomber threats on planes have been avoided by the guys and gals not doing just what our government tells us, and looking out for signs of other danger.
We're humans, the most adaptable multi-cellular organisms on the planet, and there's a reason people can slip by laws. Either there's not enough of them, or we're setting up loopholes BECAUSE of them.
@UltimateKingSonic As far as I'm concerned, all of us is responsible for this situation, especially through not standing up for our rights (and against stupidity).
._. Yep, direct your anger at the government not the person thats just doing what they were told.
It still seems to impractical with the TSA though... essepecially now that they are randomly searching people who take the BUS in the US.
The original reason for these implementations by the government was sept 11. But then you have Archetecs and Engineers who say that the circumstances are highly suspect and want an inquiry.
couldn't agree with rick more. The poor sap looking at all those unsightly images of overfed slobs going through security are the ones who'll suffer with nightmares of images they just can't un-remember.
Dogs can smell explosive on a molecular level and have been scienfically proven to do as good or better job than any technology we can come up with to do it. Send in the dogs as primary detectors. If people don;t like dogs, they got pat-downers and scanners all they like.

@druidflower Okay I see what you mean. Now, perhaps I didn't choose my words well, but I didn't mean to imply that more people should be sexually assaulted. That would be monstrous. I certainly hope most people didn't interpret my comment that way.

Lets be honest here people. When it comes down to increased searching in airports, or an increased security threat while traveling what would you rather have? the assurance that because of this body scan you are less likely to be killed while flying? or avoiding the awkward 30 second pat down before boarding a plane. I have zero problem with anyone who wants to pat me down (for security reasons) or take an anonymous scan of my body if it means increased airport security
oakster15 1 year ago
@oakster15 Except that it doesn't -- Israel has far more passive but more effective security, and we've seen time and again that anyone really determined to cause havoc here will find a way around these systems with enough practice and planning.
BoredomCorner 1 year ago
At least the searches are fairly mild here (if still useless and stupid). In the states, you're the victim of a sex crime every time you go into the airport.
BoredomCorner 1 year ago 2
@BoredomCorner Oh, so its mild..well, that makes it alright then..

@jkzl1008 You try getting groped by a complete stranger, for no reason, knowing that it does no good at all, and see how you react.
Or would you rather turn in your freedom right now and get it over with?
BoredomCorner 1 year ago
@BoredomCorner I've gone through the "pat down" in an airport just recently. It was a non-event. I was not traumatized nor did I lose my freedom. There are many things we are make to do that we really don't like (pay taxes to governments that we did not vote for, buy house insurance so we can get a mortgage even though we know they will fight tooth and nail to avoid a pay out) but life is full of that. I am trying to point out that perhpas we need to sweat the big stuff.
jkzl1008 1 year ago 13
@jkzl1008 It's a slippery slope, first their touching your genitals because they dont believe in the concept of innocent until proven guilty, then their interfereing in all aspects of the citizens life, look at what the tsa wants to do in the states, check points at all points of travel and commerce, including high school proms for fucks sake, and if harper follows through with the spp, and he will, then our laws and regulations will be in harmony with the insanity going on within the usa.
mothman64 8 months ago
@jkzl1008 well it more like a rub down... I've had my fair share.
Freepepsi42 1 month ago
@jkzl1008 Go to the USA and try to fly, they pat you down, feel up your genitals, they do the same to children, and wife, It's disgusting. And absolutely no needed. If pat downs worked, the underwear bomber never would made it on the plane. Funny that the FB scanners came out "in response" to that incident, even though Chertof ordered them before hand. WOW where is he now? working for the company that created them. Not to mention the massive radiation these machines leak. Enjoy the police state!

I do believe that these searches are unreasonable, thus it goes against the CHARTER OF RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS

They have the worlds safest airport system.

You've missed Rick's entire point: It's not the dudes in the rubber gloves making the rules.
May you get a job working for the TSA or CATSA, having to look at those bodies. Then, go complain.
gordonf4yt 1 year ago
@gordonf4yt It's the dudes in the rubber gloves who choose to be that heavy-handed about them. Being a front-line worker does not excuse a lack of judgment.
BoredomCorner 1 year ago
@BoredomCorner Overzealous guards need to be complained about. Only one time has that ever happened to me at any kind of security checkpoint. That lady lost her job after.
I've only experienced professionalism at the checkpoints since then, and I've been around, even to Seoul once.
I'll defend Rick's right to say what he says. Isn't that called free speech where you're from?
gordonf4yt 1 year ago
@gordonf4yt Free speech also includes my right to point out that he -- and you -- are wrong.
BoredomCorner 1 year ago
@BoredomCorner Free speech allows you to say what you want, but it doesn't make you right. You can SAY someone is wrong, like Rick or like someone else on here, but it doesn't mean your opinion is more correct than anyone else's. And whether or not you're allowed to say it, you still can get people mad. Don't hide behind rules, back yourself up with facts.
Like the fact that I'll just keep myself on the ground or buy a private jet. If we get mad at anyone, we should make it someone in power.

TheTwistedGypsy 1 year ago
@TheTwistedGypsy I think his point was to deal with it when you're actually going through security, because security can't really do anything about it. He didn't say anything about not standing up for our rights against the government that makes the rules
mysterygirl154 1 year ago
@mysterygirl154 "He didn't say anything about not standing up for our rights against the government that makes the rules."
well there's some convoluted logic. How can, and why would, we allow them to "make the rules" as you say that ARE AN INFRINGEMENT ON OUR RIGHTS. The governments FIRST OBLIGATION TO THE PEOPLE< IS TO PROTECT THOSE RIGHTS AT ALL COSTS. Living in Freedom is a dangerous proposition. But the alternative, IE: tyranny is even scarier.
TheTwistedGypsy 1 year ago
@TheTwistedGypsy We vote for them, that's what allows them to "make the rules". If people are so upset about what the government is doing then maybe the 40% of people who didn't vote at the last election should do so.
mysterygirl154 1 year ago
@mysterygirl154 maybe you should study a little bit on what a Confederation, under a Constitution, and Bill Of Rights is. We vote them in with the express intent and purpose to follow those Documents. No were do they have the right to circumvent it. As it Clearly states. Perhaps you are thinking of another country like China or Iran, or N. Korea. Certainly not about CANADA>

UltimateKingSonic 1 year ago
@UltimateKingSonic As far as I'm concerned, all of us is responsible for this situation, especially through not standing up for our rights (and against stupidity).
BoredomCorner 1 year ago
:S If its all been a lie..then whats justified?
