I am proud to say that Rob is my main vocal influence (Angela Gossow second, sorry for those of you that don't like gutterals lol) but I incorporate both the high operatic vocals and the screams in both of my bands and a lot of people still have respect for the high notes. I'm also proud to say that I am also a self taught vocalist, not one lesson in my life. LONG LIVE PRIEST! \m/
Painkiller era wasn't really good for Rob's voice :/
I much prefer his 80's and then 00's singing. Far too much helium on these performances for my tastes (Apart from All Guns Blazing which is brilliant!)
@sonnic1995 Ey, he can do the part of "youre possesing me" I saw them 2 weeks ago and I have to say Rob is in shape. When they played Painkiller I just jizzed my pants! xD
Halford and the guys from Priest do NOT need to fill stadiums now like they used to early on. They have already proved themselves by having a great career for 40 years.
Rob Halord is the greatest Heavy Metal Vocalist - "Metal God" of the century. For the last 32 years he has been given us metal heads his vocal talents. The highs and the lows and everything inbetween. From Judas Priest to Halford back Judas Priest.
He has and will inspir the next generation of vocalist.....
Tipton is just... brilliant. I'm not saying K.K. is any worse because he gives aggression to their tone, but some of classically influenced Glenn's solos could have easily been played by some 19th century violin virtuoso and sound equally brilliant as they do with the distortion. I've been trying to play some Priest solos lately, and although I do quite well, I must say that even those that sound simple aren't simple at all.
I ran a Front Of House Spotlight for this show.....Wouldda been nice to get a copy of this video from the Video Production Dept. @ the Palace.....LoL!! Another Video we didn't get paid for.........
Here's why Halford RULES: 1) No classical/formal training...the man's voice is his own, natural gift. 2) He sets the bar high and tries to even out-do himself, which yes...didn't always work, but when it did??? Lordy.... 3) His vocal range even at 60 is such that vocalists HALF his age wince in reverence, hoping to Christ they have what it takes at FORTY, much less SIXTY. 4) The man believes in what he does and who he does it for more than anyone else in the business. Questions?
I've noticed that Rob changes his performance style very often. Sometimes he's more animated on stage than with other times. I saw Judas Priest in San Diego in August 2009 and Priest were FANTASTIC.
Wow, he pretty much just stares at the ground the whole time. This is right before he went in rehab, right? Good thing. Not hating on Halford, he is the best, but this performance is awkward.
Rob Halford is almost 60 years old; ok? Give him a break. Does anyone honestly expect him to belch out those fantastic screams as he did during this tour or earlier in the 1980's?
Rob Halford and the others are GREAT!! They were great early on and are GREATER NOW!!
@Hellsredeemer I didn't expect him to be able to do it, but he can HIT THOSE NOTES AGAIN!!! Check out some of those videos with with his band Halford in 2010.
everyone who has an amazing voice and uses it as much as halford will loose alot of quality and alot of you are shocked that the metal god lost it a little he was under alot of strain on this tour i mean have you heard the record the vocals on the whole album would tear a voice to pieces he did great but we have to face the fact that he will never sound like he did on unleashed in the east again that is just a sad fact but he is still rocking the world and is still the metal god
Lets see you do better than man dont dish halford he is the pioneer of metal so what its not studio quality give him a break he does a sick vocal solo that isnt on the studio track or at least i didnt hear it 2:58 to about 3:08
man i agree with everything you say and the fact that i cant sing like him doesnt mean that i cant say that i ve heard him sing it like the studio version....u like this singing?haven't you heard him do it better than the studio version?
Glenn Tipton is my IDOL and Judas Priest are my favorite band. Its not hard though to see that Rob was a bit off on this song on this night. I say that because I have heard some other songs from this show and Rob pulled them off perfectly. This really wasn't the best Tour for him. I heard some recordings from earlier on this tour and he was spot on but for the majority you could tell that it was taking a toll on his voice. Glenn made a split-second mistake during the solo but no one is perfect!
someone dubed over this shit listen to the all the mistakes.......rob wouldn't sing like that not to mention the craking in the voice thats not rob.......unless it's just a really bad recording of this ,all in all the "priest is the shit just say theme on the 5th it was great
popajio you don't know shit about Judas Priest, you fucking retard, Tim Owens was like a back up vocals untill Rob reunited with Judas Priest. Tim Owens is just a wannabe Rob Halford, but he still did good for Judas Priest, i don't hate him either
What the fuck!!! American Idol singers aren't even close to pop singers like Michael Jackson or Steve Perry. I've been listening to metal ever since I was two and I tell you Rob Halford is the best Metal Vocalist on this planet. How dare you compare Rob's voice with those pathetic A.I. singers. HIS VOICE IS JUST EARTH SHATTERING!!!!
@Cyanarchy Adam Lambert ripped off plenty of singers to get his voice. He's just a copycat. Fairly average really. You'd be surprised to know that there are thousands of classically trained singers out there that can easily make Adam look mediocre (because he is). They just happen to have self respect and earn their reputation through hard work. Much like Rob Halford here who has 40 years of experience as a vocalist and songwriter (which Adam can't match with glorified karaoke covers).
Painkiller is a great album. The only downside is that from that tour on Rob became different. I'm not complaining or anything, just pointing out. His movements were strange, his voice was great but also a bit peculiar and he looked weird with no hair. It's a shame cos he was fine on the Turbo tour, that was possibly his best look.
I agree with you, Painkiller kicks ass. I bet that A.I. singers CANNOT reach Rob's vocal range. Not mention his age, I mean how many singers in this planet can reach Rob's vocal range at the age of 50+? Steve Perry lost his voice and Tom Jones. BUT ROB WAS BORN TO SING METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You obviously do not know anything about Judas Priest. Rob Halford has always had the this voice. The only music you probably are familiar with is the crap that teenagers watch on American Idol. There is a reason Judas Priest is still performing and making music today 35 years after they started. BECAUSE THEY ARE GREAT!!!
I will pay anyone $1000 if any of the COCKSUCKERS on American Idol are still around in 35 years. Hell, I bet none of them will even last 5 years
And for your information; Rob Halford is a badass!!!!!
He is the best metal singer on the planet!!! Judas Priest should of been inducted into the rock n' roll hall of fame and not those hermaphroditic un-talented bastards in Metallica.
Judas Priest have been performing for 35 years and have always evolved in their music, but stayed true to their craft of making great metal music. Metallica CANNOT boast this type of history or credentials.
I gotta say, as much as Judas Priest is the BEST BAND EVER, the 1990 Painkiller Detroit shows were horrible.
The camera was always focused on Glenn, which was probably because he was the only member who was putting on an actual PERFORMANCE, Rob and KK just stand around. Rob doesn't even interact with the audience, he just stands sideways, with his godly voice completely absent here.
for those who have never sung in there lives, let me tell you. The Maiden cover bands ive seen, most of them can do what Bruce does for Maiden, now from the Priest cover bands i see, i gotta laugh at the singers cause they got the look, just can't near as good as Halford. what does that tell you?
dickinson sings from breast and stomach and halford from throat they are using different technichs to compare they are great and best of all the others just enjoy them
You obviously dont know s.hit about singing mate :) Its not like its the same voices he uses for low and high notes. The highs sounds fine, but a lot of his other ones sounds a bit nasal like Bruce.
I think Bruce is better then Rob in some ways and the other way around.
get off of iron maidens jokk and you would learn a thing or two. Rob doesnt sing nasel at all, when he goes for mid hi notes thats chest voice he uses
Well he was really nasal this tour. He'd been on coke, heavy drink & smoke for 10 years straight and at this point was starting to lose his voice so I assume he was preserve it by using less vocal force and distortion. Compare this to even the Ram It Down tour and you'll see it's alot more nasally.
The fact is he drank alot chewed gum while performing and trust me all that just messes with sound of anyone's voice, but that has nothing to do with his actual vocal range, he sounded great during the Fight and Halford records there after
Please guys, don´t break my balls, Rob and Bruce are the best singers in all fucking world, and Iron Maiden & Judas Priest the best bands in all fucking heavy metal. The comparation is stoopid. Enjoy two bands and don´t be fools.
I can't fucking believe people are debating Halford vs. Dickenson. Dickenson is/was perfect for Maiden. Halford, like someone else said, is the METAL GOD. He called himself that, and he fucking backed it up. Nobody ever owned a stage like Halford. I doubt anybody ever will.
About the performance now...It aint good. They have performed infront of my own eyes and ears much much better. And if a performance isnt good that means absolutly NOTHING.They are humans ok none is perfect. That doesnt mean they are not one of the most respected and greatest metal bands ever.
Piano is better than the violin.Ferrari is better than marlboro.Coca cola is better than Yamaha. This is what you are saying. And listen a fact. You are a big zero and a huge retard. You dont even deserve to shave Dickinson's balls sucker.
You cant sing great every single show. Priest songs are very hard to sing also. Try singing this setlist 150 times per year and see how you sound at about the 100th show. Not to mention hes in his 40's in this video.
haha halford wishes he could sing like he used to. bruce sings better than ever now. look at any of his live performances and its better than the 80s. its amazing. dont get me wrong i love halford. priest is my second favorite band. i think you can guess whos the first.
Considering his been singing for nearly 40 years his vocals must deteriorate to a certain degree. He is still by far the best rock vocalist ever. No one can even come close to his vocal range.
I don't think he's singing so bad here, this song demands his voice a lot, such as most JP songs. Have you thought he could be singing for more than an hour? How about you try to do it?
Man, Glenn butchered that solo pretty bad a few times, he was playing it properly but out of position, he was playing it flat I think for a few seconds there, you could see he had to reposition himself a few times.
He is still my favorite guitarist and my biggest influence.
thats excellent to hear honestly i know the studio version is alot better because the band can cover up all the bad bits in the song & edit the material! But for the live performances u should check out live in budokan tokyo rising in the east amazing dvd dude!

for those who have never sung in there lives, let me tell you. The Maiden cover bands ive seen, most of them can do what Bruce does for Maiden, now from the Priest cover bands i see, i gotta laugh at the singers cause they got the look, just can't near as good as Halford. what does that tell you?
Metalstryke 3 years ago
Totally right here.
MetalGearRider 3 years ago
I confirm, never seen anyone to be even near to Halford.
kornjubi 3 years ago 4
dickinson sings from breast and stomach and halford from throat they are using different technichs to compare they are great and best of all the others just enjoy them
tatamian 3 years ago
bruce sings nasal, Halfords got more range
Metalstryke 3 years ago
Halford sings pretty damn nasal aswell dude :p Nothing wrong with that tho.
ironjokk 3 years ago
your stupid for even saying that, Halford had a near Five octave vocal range, and thats what you have to say?
Metalstryke 3 years ago 6
You obviously dont know s.hit about singing mate :) Its not like its the same voices he uses for low and high notes. The highs sounds fine, but a lot of his other ones sounds a bit nasal like Bruce.
I think Bruce is better then Rob in some ways and the other way around.
ironjokk 3 years ago
get off of iron maidens jokk and you would learn a thing or two. Rob doesnt sing nasel at all, when he goes for mid hi notes thats chest voice he uses
Metalstryke 2 years ago 3
Yes he does. Maby not as much as Bruce, cause Bruce has a natural nasal tone.
ironjokk 2 years ago
Well he was really nasal this tour. He'd been on coke, heavy drink & smoke for 10 years straight and at this point was starting to lose his voice so I assume he was preserve it by using less vocal force and distortion. Compare this to even the Ram It Down tour and you'll see it's alot more nasally.
ItsDustinDazzlin 2 years ago
The fact is he drank alot chewed gum while performing and trust me all that just messes with sound of anyone's voice, but that has nothing to do with his actual vocal range, he sounded great during the Fight and Halford records there after
Metalstryke 2 years ago
Please guys, don´t break my balls, Rob and Bruce are the best singers in all fucking world, and Iron Maiden & Judas Priest the best bands in all fucking heavy metal. The comparation is stoopid. Enjoy two bands and don´t be fools.
Long live the metal god´s and Up the Iron´s!!!

Dickinson only dreams of thoose high notes that Halford takes easiley.

Man, does this look dated. The song is good, but the sound on this video is shit and they look super silly in those outfits.

I saw him last night at the Budokan and I got to say he was excellent. I have see his shows live since 1982, and this was beyond those.
I can't get enough of the band.

You cant sing great every single show. Priest songs are very hard to sing also. Try singing this setlist 150 times per year and see how you sound at about the 100th show. Not to mention hes in his 40's in this video.

Considering his been singing for nearly 40 years his vocals must deteriorate to a certain degree. He is still by far the best rock vocalist ever. No one can even come close to his vocal range.

I worship Halford, so it's heart-breaking to hear his voice so strained on all his live vids on YouTube.
lharrod 3 years ago
I don't think he's singing so bad here, this song demands his voice a lot, such as most JP songs. Have you thought he could be singing for more than an hour? How about you try to do it?
andrelias 3 years ago 2
Halford's voice was at it's worst during the Painkiller tour, acctually most of the Painkiller material is pretty unhuman to sing.

Man, Glenn butchered that solo pretty bad a few times, he was playing it properly but out of position, he was playing it flat I think for a few seconds there, you could see he had to reposition himself a few times.
He is still my favorite guitarist and my biggest influence.
JPeeper 3 years ago 2
thats excellent to hear honestly i know the studio version is alot better because the band can cover up all the bad bits in the song & edit the material! But for the live performances u should check out live in budokan tokyo rising in the east amazing dvd dude!
