In the past our teachers were always the grandmasters and worldchampions, nowadays our teachers are the computers. They play , solve and compose . So have a look at youtube.com :
paul morphy was so good no one wanted to play him. now with computers players are getting stronger and stronger. it is difficult to compare players from different era's.The pressure on fischer was intense one man against the world ie russia that he just left the game

For me the greatest chesschampion of all times is Adolf Anderssen. Although he lost against Paul Morphy in 1682 (or 83 I don't now exactly) because he had influenca or cholera or something in that time, he would never have lost this bishop ending with that sacrifice on h2 against Spassky. I would not have lost this too! Fischer is far behind Anderssen!
Morphy - although a great player - was never world champion. Steiniz was the first offical world champion. But Morphy was clearly the best player of his generation. An amazing talent.
I would prefere to remember that shiny eyed brooklyn boy who blasted away the soviet chess machine and weep with him at the many injustices that he had to endure during his lifetime.
" The chess heavens open and down came Fischer" Tal ( Another beautiful and brilliant player. RIP Robert James, your trials and sorrows are not forgotten.
One of the greatest chess geniuses of all times. Way too bad he was not able to handle all that pressure around him and ended as he ended. What a waste of an incredibly special person.
Question for conspiracy theory lovers: was he so great he saw what we do not see?
(Steinitz) was born in Prague - the captial of the Czech Republic - but back then at the time it was Bohemia - part of the Austrian Empire. But he was considered Austrian, not German. He moved to the USA in 1883 long after he was regarded as the world champion. So Fischer is the only Amercian World Champion by the fact that he was BORN in the USA. Lucky for Fischer that Paul Morphy quit the game age 22/23 otherwise he would of very likely have been the USA's first world champion.
