  • You have amazing control over your vocal fry register, however there is no way that doing warm ups like so in your video can be good for your vocal chords, as it puts a similar amount of strain on your vocal chords as the whistle register does.

  • @metalfun111 He looks like a goblin...

  • LMAO

  • Is this really the technique used to sing in your whistle register? I've been told this exercise is in ingenius method on how to increase your range greatly... Dunno if it's true. I just like doing it cause its fun. HAHA :D

  • What a small man!

  • anyone see that massive overbearing forehead??

  • I still looking for how to sing "screaming" not a rock or so just the pop one.Do u know any technique? How to do it? Is it screaming but in tune? Thank You

  • and now im singing higher than normal..

  • now i went and scared my cat. i only watched this cuz nickasaur favorited it. I LIKE IT THO!

  • Nice presentation man! According to McClosky method of voice, singing on vocal fry is the worse singing way for your vocal fold. Your vocal fold and larynx would be destroyed if you practiced on vocal fry. You might think it is ok.. but after 5-10 years, your vocal fold will be definitely destroyed if you keep singing on vocal fry.

  • i subbed and added, i like your simple approach (: very good,!

  • your head = huge

  • @Synith loool

  • what if i cant sing....will this help me? lol well im not horrible but im not great either. i just dont know how to hold a not too long... my voice just fades... and i seem a little more "talky" then "singy"... will all your exercises help imporve my singing?

  • @meli42991 If you head over to my website you can sign up for my free 8 week course. That will definately improve your singing.

  • @AussieVocalCoach yes ive signed up now :) thanks! ive already started your lessons and they seem legit so im gonna keep at it.

  • @sqprx Hahaha thanks a lot! This was recorded using my old webcam which seriously records things out of proportion! I've got a nice HD video camera now, not so Elmer looking! ;)

  • @AussieVocalCoach I see that you evaded that comment quite swiftly, but I know it hurt inside.

  • great vid man! im definitely going to use this technique, but one of the other things i want to accomplish with vocal fry is the rock singer sound. not screaming, but the gravelly sound on the high notes which makes u sound like ur scream/singing them, but im having lots of trouble. i heard somewhere that i need to go into me head voice when i do that. is that true? any tips, because, it doesn't sound right at all whenever i try it. anyone, please help!

  • @futurerocker77 Hey man. Yes it's true, you have to go into head voice and combine it with vocal fry to get the rock sound you are after. Start out soft and see if you can build in volume. I do have a more in depth video about this but it's only available through my website. It's a 20 minute lesson on vocal fry as a part of a 5 video series I have recorded on style. It will be available in about 3 weeks if you are interested.

  • @AussieVocalCoach where would i find this video on your site when you post it?

  • @futurerocker77 Look for the "X factor Video Series". It will be available in about a week.

  • @AussieVocalCoach how do i get a password?

  • thank you for doing this for us. are there any long term benefits of vocal fry exercise ?

  • @heavyatheart Benefits include improvements to your upper range (more edge and less vocal weight) and a more connected voice throughout your entire range.

  • Isn't the use of vocal fry bad for your vocal chords?

  • @ScooterMcBean When vocal fry is used properly there is no risk to the vocal cords. If vocal fry is used with tension in your throat then there is a risk.

  • HI Sir. thanks for this video.. i'm a chorister b4 and we did most of you teach here. I'm From singing country Philippines

  • heres something that has been a great deal of challange to me and just about anyone who isnt Michael Jagmin, how do you get your voice that high?

im tryying to sing "all it takes is for your dreams to come true" by a skylit drive

any help would be greatly appreciated, ive been useing my guitar and matching my voice to the notes but its not helping to much

  • is there a difference between vocal fry and frying your voice?

  • @metaknight56 Well vocal fry is a technique of singing which is used to connect the vocal cords, while frying your voice sounds like the result of incorrect technique so I's say definately yes!

  • @metalfun111 Yeah it's true, I have superpowers! lol

  • I can only do vocal Fry in the morning when I just wake up. After about an hour of being up it starts to get harder. Is that wrong? should I be able to do it "anytime" or purely in the morning to warm up?

  • @TheSubwaysurfer It is normal to be able to do vocal fry easier first thing in the morning. As your body and your cords "wake up" a fuller tone to your voice will occur. It certainly is possible to do vocal fry during any part of the day. It just takes practice. It is great for a morning warm up if that's all you can manage at this stage.

  • hey man just subed u btw bout the vocal fry how many times should i repeat the video and re do tis and does it cost money for lessons on ur website

  • @kashifbilgrami Hey man. Once a day is fine, you could also do a bit of vocal fry in a warm up. All the lessons on my website are free and I am just about to release a free 8 week course called "What I didn't learn from my singing teacher, but wish I had". Head over to my website and join the newsletter to get notified when it is available.

  • Great lesson Ian, thanks. I can do the fry, but it stops dead at B below middle C (just about where you dropped out in the video!). When Brett et al do it they seem to be able to easily go int the head voice register with it - any tips would be greatly appreciated, Greg

  • hello i want to ask about vocal fry screaming , i need to know how they use the vocal fry to get that screaming voice , if u have any experience about screaming , I'll be grateful if you'd post something :D

  • @dragomancer2 Hi, Screaming is not really my area of expertise so I don't want to give you any false advice. Ian

  • lol really sounds like elmer fudd. the use is also in blues, rock, and other forms of music where you want to add an edge to your voice, since not 'everyone' wants to have a pure smooth voice. it can add kick to song if its in that style

  • so whats the point of vocal fry? vocal cord closure? so what?

    (genuinely curious!)

  • @loko2468 Vocal cord closure is important because it will eliminate "breathiness" from the sound of a voice and also prevent some singers resorting to falsetto when they sing higher notes. The vocal fry sound will help with these two problems.

  • @loko2468 falsetto happens because you dont have strong vocal cord to close the cord and so it'll give you a weak, light and breathy sound. If you learn how to close the cord you can get a much more stronger head voice and you can connect both chest and head so you have no breaks

  • does the vocal fry gurgle sound increase like the clicking sound does it increase with each higher pitch like say from C4 to C#4 does the clicking go faster . hope this made sense thanks

  • one question...can vocal fry be developed? I do have it but it isn't as distinct as yours and when i go higher it disappears

  • can you increase the vocalfry to get it louder or is it a matter of your natural voice?

  • Nope... Thats the job of the microphone.

  • Yeah I agree. Don't try and sing vocal fry too loud. Use a microphone to achieve a bigger sound. You can risk hurting your voice by singing it too loud.

  • @AussieVocalCoach i suggest if your using this for metal then add the vocal fry to a loud sung note. it makes a "scream" with out actually screaming which would destroy your voice.

btw: this is a great warm up for vocal fry thank you a lot :)

  • i heard this helps to develop whistle register is that true??

  • I can see how it could help. Both vocal fry and whistle register require a lot of cord closure. I'm no expert on whistle register, I can't do it regularly myself so I don't teach it. I'd say Brett Manning is the best person to ask.

  • Hi Ian, I'm Richard and I have practiced this exercise but how do I connect with my chest voice to sing a song that requires vocal fry? I do not have to sing the whole song with vocal fry, do you?

  • I don't recommend singing an entire song with vocal fry. I use it at the beginning of a phrase, or sometimes at the end of a phrase for effect.

  • hey can women do fry as well? How low do they get?

  • @ASSHOLELA y the hell is your name asshole? haha lol. btw, yea women can do vocal fry but they shouldn't push their voice down as much.

  • britney uses it all the time

  • Okay, I get most of it now ;). Thanks for the info. Haha. Really helped =)

  • I need to ask a simple question... what is Vocal Cord Closure? =)... Just need to be clear on what it is.. Thanks ^^

  • Vocal cord closure is a part of the process of making sound. When they are closed they stop air from being exhaled. As they are opened the air passing through them causes vibration which creates sound. If they are opened too much it can result in a breathy tone. Vocal fry is useful because it occurs when the cords are only slightly open which helps with compression (pressure behind the cords) which is vital for singing. I hope that helps.

  • the purpose of the vocal fry is to help train your throat muscles on how to maintain proper cord closure without constricting other muscles. on open throat with closed cords. Vocal fry is achieved when the proper throat configuration is achieved BUT there is only a small amount of air being pushed through, resulting in the funny sound . after you can maintain a vocal fry on a particular pitch .. add more air and the tone that you produce will sound fuller, more resonant and balanced.

  • Hey Aaron. Thanks for the informative comment. You are correct.

  • i am finding that i can start this creaking sound, but it turns into tone, and its harder to make the creaking sound the more i do the excercise and turns into tone? is this a good aim? is this showing that my vocal chords are coming together properly?

  • Hi Ian, I've been practicing the vocal fry scale for quite a while, but i face a big problem. I don't know how much tension to apply! I cannot activate vocal fry without tensing the throat. Any suggestion finding the balance? Should I maintain a relaxed, clear tone instead of a tensed vocal fry? If I just maintain a relaxed, clear tone, would my voice gradually strengthen and eventually achieve relaxed vocal fry?

  • Here's something you can try. Start a comfortable note in the lower part of your voice with a clear relaxed tone. Gradually diminish the volume until your voice naturally goes into vocal fry. Starting in a relaxed vocal state should help you with a relaxed vocal fry. Tension and vocal fry can be a nasty combination so try not to perform it if you feel strain.

  • With all respect this video isn't aimed at vocal fry screaming, it's purpose is to help singers with vocal cord closure.

  • this exercise has damaged my fry screaming!!!

  • the reason it "effected" your "fry screaming" is because you were doing it wrong in the first place.

The reason you were able to do it before hand was because you were taking advantage of the lack of exercise in your voice.

    I hope that makes sense....

  • You are most welcome.

Something you can try is pretend you have just woken up. Do a pretend yawn and on the exhale try to make a lazy "creeky" sound, just like you would first thing in the morning. I hope that helps.

  • Thanks a lot for these great videos.

Do you have any tips on what to do if I'm having trouble activating vocal fry? Some days it comes a lot easier than others

  • Thanks Ian, i've learnt something new! I never thought much about the lowest part of my register. Thanks for the info!

  • Thanks Ian I have been looking for a vocal fry exercise for a while.
