@JoTheVeteran If by "best electronically synthesized" you simply mean that Nobuo Uematsu made great use horrible midi to create a powerful piece of music, yes I agree. But the instruments still don't sound orchestral. Oddly, the first version of OWA I ever heard was the orchestral version (not the AC one), so when I went from that to the in-game version I wasn't too pleased. Even in the 3-year time span between FF7 and Chrono Cross midi sound quality improved substantially, and I think the
@AbsoluteZ3R0 Dude... the one winged angel score..... IS ORCHESTRATED! It the only music CD track located in the fourth disk of the FF7 game. It is NOT a midi!
You talked to me first, so at least just read my full reply.
@JoTheVeteran I have read all of your replies. Yes, it was technically scored for an orchestra, but not actually performed by one. The sounds are DEFINITELY midi. The Playstation was capable of CD quality sound and I can assure you that no recorded orchestra sounds anything like the version of OWA actually heard in the game. Those are midi instruments. On the other hand, the version on the FFVII Reunion tracks is truly orchestrated (although not by Uematsu) and performed by a real orchestra
@JoTheVeteran If you have not heard the orchestral version from the Reunion Tracks (which at this point I'm beginning to assume you haven't) I STRONGLY recommend it. It is immensely more powerful than the original and imo the best rendition of OWA that exists: /watch?v=kbWSEfokCTQ

this is awesome, its a real shame one string on the violin is fractionally out of tune.... I'm cursed with pretty good pitch and am really sensitive to fractional tuning differences, and it can really spoil things! :(
I just LOVE this cover of this song, it's one of my Favorites from the Final Fantasy series, but could you do one of either Memory of Lightwaves from FF X-2 or To Zanarkand from Final Fantasy X? Please!
For just 2 instruments this really is rather amazing.
You should get hold of that guy who plays Zelda songs and such on totally bonkers instruments (wine glasses, beer bottles, children's toys etc) and make him do some of the stuff you're less equipped for, I think he had a few wind instruments. Maybe.
me and my friend are both huge fans of FF7. i showed him lara, he showed me taylor. when you first came up with the skyrim collab, we were like, "awesome ! but none of us ever played any of the elder scrolls...". and then you came up with this collaboration. :)
Damn, Taylor can look intimidating when she's playing the most threatening parts of the music! Great cover both of you, I hope you continue doing these songs, you are both working perfectly together!
I disagree with JoTheVeteran. The minimalist way in which you ladies played this song gives it a macabre feeling akin to what Camille Saint-Saenz played (also like the soundtrack to Death Becomes Her).
I remember suggesting this months back when my kids wne tnuts for your Power Rangers theme performance and I'm so glad you finally did it. Coincidentally you also uploaded it the day after my 30th birthday. I know it was for the masses but it really has helped make my Christmas time that little bit better. Being a loyal fan of Final Fantasy 7 and of this particular song here's my honest review.
It's not that I dislike it, it's just that the instruments you are using are just not enough to complete this song. You need flutes, drums, probably one or two brass instruments and of course the lack of a chorus has a huge impact, again it this particular song.
It's an admirable attempt, but in the end it's a concert made composition and that's how it's supposed to be played.
@JoTheVeteran I don't really think these are faults. It's a cover, a re-interpretation. The orchestral approach is there in many forms already, so frankly I feel this is a breath of fresh air.
@idshanks That's the most sensible think I've read in all these replies I've been bombarded with. What you say makes sense but still isn't my cup of tea. I strongly believe that this melody cannot be delivered correctly with those means.
Just consider this. In FF7, that melody played by those two instruments only instead of the orchestral version. Would it amaze you that same? Because when I first heard this in the game I went :O and dropped my controller.
@JoTheVeteran Of course, I wouldn't be feel amazed in the same way. I do know what you mean; just saying that it's a change, and that's nice. It has a different feel I'd say, rather than a lesser one. It has its place. :)
@JoTheVeteran I think it's funny that you cite the original FF7 version as being orchestral, even though it was made using horrible sounding 15-year old midi that sounds nothing like real orchestral instruments. Do you want to know why your jaw dropped? It wasn't the instrumentation. It was the fact that this is an awesome piece of music, and that will hold true for most instrumental arrangements of it. Although the choir did help, the horrible 1997 midi technology didn't.
@JoTheVeteran I agree with you on these things. But Taylor and I just did this for fun, for all of you. Think of it as a free concert from 2 musicians who live across the globe. We don't have to do this.
@lara6683 I don't know anything about Final Fantasy. I'm not a fan of RPG's at all. I just know I enjoy listening to you both. Please keep it up. You ladies are amazing :)
@lara6683 I obviously know that, but you girls being musicians and all, I'm sure you're used to a bit of criticism. Besides, I really liked some of the the other melodies your and Taylor played, for example the Morrowind/Skyrim theme was epic. I just think that this particular one didn't deliver, sorry if my opinion is insulting in any way I really don't see it that way.
@JoTheVeteran I'm not offended. I guess there are limitations we can do nothing about, eg. I do not have access to a full orchestra and chorus :) I didn't mean for everyone to argue over it!
@lara6683 the world big criticism factory half the time cause people just jealous,
and other just not raised right to understand how to respect difference in others .
but as u said you two had fun, sounds great, fun factor is why it sounds great so that's the most important thing to have is fun with it. so congratz on another good performance!
@JoTheVeteran Your "honest review" fails to account for the purpose of the video. It's not as though the title reads: "Full Orchestral Version of One-Winged Angel." It's a piano and a violin, and it sounds great. That's all it was intended to be, and it's excellent for that particular purpose.
@Cosuin Do you have some kind of problem with "honesty"? What, do you think it has abandoned this world or something? Why so hostile, It's just my opinion.
And sure I know it isn't an Orchestral Version but how do you think that's gonna change my opinion? The music still doesn't deliver.
@JoTheVeteran I just think it's a misnomer to call your post "honest." There's nothing honest about pointing out the obvious limitations of a given composition and ignoring its purpose when critiquing it. It's like saying: "That was a great basketball game, fellas, but it really wasn't as good as it could have been because it wasn't football." None of the basketball players intended to put on a good football game, right? Calling that your opinion of the piece is patently dishonest.
@Cosuin I didn't point out the obvious (they don't have an orchestra), I pointed that this composition is not for them, plainly. Furthermore people who don't know anything about the Final Fantasy 7 story will probably not like it for It boarders to cacophony because of the lack of instruments. It certainly fails to create "that" feeling you get when you hear the Aeris' theme or Game of Thrones, both of which have been performed perfectly by those girls.
lara any chance you could do a rendition of Across the Stars from Attack of the Clones? i know you have a ton of other requests already, but this is so awesome it must be bumped to the top!
Would it ever be possible to hear you playing Dancing Mad, at least the Final Tier, from Final Fantasy VI? It's even more awesome <3 Anyway, don't know if you have ever seen his channel, but lonlonjp has an incredible channel as well, I belive you will like it. Would be fantastic to listen to a duet of yours!
A really good bits, however I found that at some parts you were playing the same parts of the melody as one another as opposed to playing parts that complemented each other. That's just my opinion anyway, but you guys did a great job!
This turned out really awesome, though I think it would have been better if you could have gotten a few more friends to join in. As a duet, I don't think it was quite as powerful as the original. (Though if I recall correctly the original had a full orchestra or something insane...)

I clapped when the song ended.
After feeling awkward because I heard nobody else clap, I realized it's a youtube video.

A really good bits, however I found that at some parts you were playing the same parts of the melody as one another as opposed to playing parts that complemented each other. That's just my opinion anyway, but you guys did a great job!

Problem is, this really, really needs more parts to do it justice. Can you re-record yourselves like, 5 or 10 times. XP

This turned out really awesome, though I think it would have been better if you could have gotten a few more friends to join in. As a duet, I don't think it was quite as powerful as the original. (Though if I recall correctly the original had a full orchestra or something insane...)
