wow, i hope i can join ur band..... i really love this song and looking for a rock version of it~~~~ whoo hoooo.... make a betta recording will be greater...!!!! keep up!!!
@ZZYY86. Thanks. I don't have a band. I recorded on my PC. That's why the quality's not high. Anyone's welcome to outdo me. I stopped recording a year ago & playing live even longer ago. Too many saw it as an excuse to control & destroy.
@ZZYY86 You made me smile. Please don't stop supporting the conformity breakers. There are so many sociopaths about and who use religion to work their control. That includes atheists.
Great job and effort, and I disagree with the so called constructive critisism. You did a great job, and your critics should find something else to criticise.
try to open your mouth a bit more on the "ah" vowels and words...so like 'died' should be 'dahied' never open the mouth in a wide fashion when singing...the mouth should always open up, dropping the jaw.
Why do people feel the need to criticise this guy. Do you really thing God is up there thinking he needs vocal lessons? I think God appreciates it just the way it is, and maybe so should you.
Ummm... I don't really know what to say!!! You have a great arrangement but you need some vocal training. I don't want to be mean but I do want to be truthful. Great idea though!!!
I find it iteresting that people are so attuned to criticising effort, that they just cant apprecitate a song. Do you think God cares about your need to be truthful or does he accept the song the way its sung?
Actually, no. I think Charles Wesley would wholeheartedly approve. You see, Charles used popular bar and pub tunes and sent Christian lyrics to them, so the common people would listen and SING!! Charles and John Wesley were the contemporary worship leaders of their time.
Neat video. Even though I'm someone who prefers more traditional church music, your rendition of one of my favorite hymns "done rock" is worthy of praise. If Charles Wesley and Joseph Campbell heard your version of their song they might be surprised at first, as I was, but in the end I think they would be pleased.
I agree! Recalling the Wesley brothers' passion for those outside the Church of England and their desire to connect with them in their style and language, this seems like just the type of rendition they would have done.
When Charles wrote this, it wasn't a "hymn" - it was, as you put it, "extreme worship" for a marginalized people.
Wow thanks! Yes I have 24 other hymns & Christmas carols, available on CD and a few of them are here on youtube. Search 'extremeworship punk hymns'. Yes, it is east Suffolk line. I filmed this video on my way to work. It started as only a video of my daily trip but I felt in editing that it could easily be a music video. I've been likened to The Clash before but not Mr Cromwell :)
Hey I can't find my original comment, but just wanted to make sure I didn't say anything that could have been seen as rude? I like this, and it did get me thinking of a Celtic kick version... You sing like an Irish man, and I like how raw this is.
If I said anything in my first comment that offended you, I'm sorry. I still like this video.
Wow, thanks. No offence taken at any time. I meant it when I said go ahead try it as a celtic sng. My is a blend of south-west and eatsern English. That means that 'mine' sounds like 'moin' in a likewise way to how many Irish folk say it. The slightly gruff voice maybe has the same sound as some irish voices. Calling it raw is a big compliment to me btw.
I've listened to every version on you tube, because I love this hymn, the words and the feelings of great humility and gratitude it produces in me. It's like realising again for the same time what He has done for me. This version is raw, unpolished and for me, the most authentic and moving. Thank you. :-)
We should get an Irish language grunge band to do a cover of this! I love this hymn, but have never before heard it sung in an Irish VERY nasal tenor, to a punky beat. Funnily enough, despite the desperate need for antihistemenes... it seems to work... whether a real punk would like it or not I don't know. It just needs a fiddle, a bodhran and a bit more volume on the vocal, and you've got an Irish grunge hymn. I've got relatives I'd love to hear do a cover of this ar Gaelge.
Ya know they say that u shouldn't have chiristian rock coz it sounds like the music of today. well all the songs in the hymnals and songs that aren't about God all have the same style. So that was modern music back then.
You are so right. That is why William Booth said 'Why should the devil have all the best tunes?' The bible says nothing about what style to play but it does say to give it you all.
An old priest I used to know always said when you sing you're praying twice. I'm sure that if God had a preferred style of music, we'd have been told.
Of course, whether Mr Wesley would have approved is another matter, but I suspect he might well.

What Charles Wesley would faint at is your criticism not at how it was sung.

That was very powerful. Hope you do other hymns. East Suffolk Line? Very strong non-conformist tradition in East Anglia. Oliver Cromwell.

wesley probably would have agreed. he knew enough that the style of music isn't what matters, but the spirit.
