Recorded on December 17, 1941, and was originally part of a 78 rpm "album" set, "Moanin' Low: Torch Songs by Lena Horne" {Victor 118}, later reissued as part of a double LP, "This Is Lena Horne".
I cleaned everything up, unit is now playing great on all speeds. When I first turn the unit on the needle drops to the lp, no music, then a loud buzz and music starts coming in a ten seconds, the buzz fades and music sounds great. I turn the volume all the way down and you can barely hear the buzz. It's like something has to warm up, then it softens. Then buzz might come back after playing 15 mins. Where should I start looking? How do I check capcacitor?
Sounds great-I just bought this same model. Promised it was in great shape-not! Had to remount the motor-new grouments. Two things. a light buzz that stays most of the time-should I get a new pre-amp tube (12ax7)? Speed plays great most of the time, but will start slowing down intermittently-is there a place to buy service manuals?
There might be a Sams Photofact available for this model, but I am not sure where to obtain one. The buzz is not likely a tube, more like a bad capacitor, or grounding problem. Try taking off all the small belts in the turntable speed mechanism and cleaning them , the idler wheel, and the inside of the turntable with alcohol. The pulleys the small belts are on often need to be pulled off and cleaned with alcohol, and oiled.
You could very well have a Sonotone, but more commonly they were a 2t, which was in the 1955 models. The blonde 1955 RCA I have posted does have the Sonotone 2t, but this one is a 1957 and has an Astatic 89tx
those rca players are beautiful and sound awesome! i have the 7hifi45 rca 45 rpm record player just like that, but itz from 1956. i picked it up at a flea market this summer for $25. itz in good shape, but the changer needs work. i made a vid of it on my other channel "damusician". can't wait to fix!

The sound is incredibly good for a recording released in 1941. You're a lucky guy!

Thanks for the tip, had cleaned the rollers but not the inside of the table. I think you are right on the capacitor.
Thanks Again

Kudos. best record changer ever for my money. What cartridge are you using?

It is an Astatic 89tx, which is the original type of cartridge for this record player
