I loved this little joke, but the more blatant reference fro the previous season was classier, when Castle dressed up as Mal, and when asked what he was he replied "Space Cowboy." Is then told there are no cows in space, and replies again "Sure there could be!" An obvious nod to episode 5 of Firefly.

When that movement started, it was going for roughly a week before Nathan Fillion said that he would only buy the rights to Firefly with his own money, not with other people's money. I'm sure Joss Whedon feels the same way. It got shot down pretty quickly, I'm surprised people are still behind it.
