@TheLastFort The basegame actually isn't that good. The mods available make up for this though. Trigger Maru Overhaul would be the thing to go for. This makes the sim as realistic as possible (within the hardcoded limits of the game).
Some quick research suggested to me that you were probably attacked by a Japanese reconnaissance seaplane. They had the ability to land on water, and thus did not require the use of land air bases. They could refuel just about anywhere, and thus were often attached to individual warships and task-forces. Primary functions included scouting for enemy ships and subs. Some had the capacity to serve as dive-bombers, and that would explain your prior predicament.
