My grandfather, who was a member of a group called The Tennessee Gentlemen, and Lester Flatt are cousins. They knew each other growing up and if I'm not mistaken they played together a few times at some festivals. Even though I don't have much musical talent, it makes me very proud to have kin like them.
@PhatBrady1017 Is Paul Flatt still around? In the 1970s he was a high ranking minister with the Worldwide Church of God....he looked exactly like Lester, and had a terrific singing voice!
This early Lester and Earl music is the absolute ultimate. My guess on it's date would be 1959--1962. Its also great to hear of the personal anecdotes. Would I ever have loved to be in Bristol around 1949.
YEEHAAW! I LOVE this Bluegrass Music! Thanks for posting! Country Music & Bluegrass Music are my FAVORITE genres of Music for this Brooklyn, NY City Boy. I also like Bill Monroe's version. Thank you VERY much! :)
In the early 60's they used to record their show in Ashland, Ky. I attended Marshall U. in Huntington, WVA just down the road. One night, driving home from there I passed their bus on Route 60 near Barboursville. I drove a 1964 Pugeot 404 Sunliner with a roll back top. I had my banjo with me. Stuck it out the top of the car and drove for a mile that way until their driver pointed at me and they all came to the front of the bus. Motioned for me to pull over and Early signed my banjo head.
When I was about two yrs old, my parents lived in an apartment next to a small trailer court in which Lester & Earl lived in while they performed on WCYB radio's Farm N Fun program in Bristol TN. My dad worked on their old car at my Grandpa's gas station across the street. My mom says Lester flirted with her, she was very pretty.
Notice that Lester Flatt is one of the few bluegrass guitarists that uses a thumb pick.

The deeper I go into Bluegrass, the more I think it is a gateway to punk rock....

Thank you for this GREAT video ! If you can, please upload additional videos with the fireplace in the background that include Uncle Josh Graves.
(There are too many without Josh, like most of their quartets.) This post is extra-special, because it has Josh ! So thank you very much. CCDG
