@Nirvalica well its because the people doing the hitting cannot be as careless as football players. They dont have a helmet or shoulder pads to protect them from breaking their neck. I play football and rugby, i do a fair bit of tackling... multiply a stinger you would get from a heavy shoulder hit in football by 50 and thats how it would feel without padding.

@RewaMarlin12 agreed they hit harder but i would say running lines between the two codes are different... as in league is about making yardage quickly therefore running in straighter lines therefore giving a defender a better indication to where a player is going to run which allows them to make the bigger hit. whereas rugby union 'can' be built up in phases and therefore running lines are not always necessarily very straight.

I play football and rugby. Rugby definately more physically demanding. However, rugby hard hits will hurt more, but they happen less often. A helmet to helmet ear ringer is common in football. And pads really dont do anything. However the hard hits in rugby are much worse.

@JwMotorsports1 most definetly you have to be much fitter as after a big hit you have to get back up and make another or possibly take another if your are running the ball. You get a break every few seconds for about a min or more after 10 seconds of play. Sometimes you won't get a break in play in rugby for like 10 or 15 mins.

i play american football in high school and rugby this is my first year, rugby takes so much more out of you because there isnt plays, its all one time like soccer, within 3 mins your done, and in football you have breaks, you do hit alot harder but once again you have people blocking and breaks... in rugby you have noe of that

I play football and rugby. Rugby definately more physically demanding. However, rugby hard hits will hurt more, but they happen less often. A helmet to helmet ear ringer is common in football. And pads really dont do anything. However the hard hits in rugby are much worse.

@UnitedProviences I was saying that the hard hits in rugby happen more often. Rugby contact is much more prominent when compared to football but harder hits in football occur more often, because the pads allow the body to sustain it.

rugby players only quit for 'small' injuries because unlike american football players they have to be on the move almost constantly for 80 mins. Football players just make a tackle then the game stops and they all high-five

@JwMotorsports1 most definetly you have to be much fitter as after a big hit you have to get back up and make another or possibly take another if your are running the ball. You get a break every few seconds for about a min or more after 10 seconds of play. Sometimes you won't get a break in play in rugby for like 10 or 15 mins.

The injuries aren't always small it's the ref who decideds if the player is bleeding too much to play on, not actually hurt.

You're an idiot if you think that....I played Rugby for ten years...nose broken 4 times, left hand broken, all finger bar the middle ones broken, broken thumb twice, ligaments in both ankles torn, broken toes, severe whiplash twice in hospital for two weeks, ear torn half off, consussed multiple times, you'd probably cry off to mummy having ONE of these injuries mate, Rugby players hit hard with NO pads. NFL they hit hard...once...maybe twice in a match, try for 80 minutes straight, then comment

lol no trust me. I'm a born and bred American. But my family moved to London a year ago. I used to be the captain of my high schools American football team. But I didn't even make it into the first rugby team for my new school. American Football is a rough sport. But rugby is a lot, and i mean a lot rougher. You will never understand how much different playing competitively with no pads is. It hurts a lot.
And torn ligaments only put players out of action for a little while in any sport.
