When I'm in LA, I like to sit out back of "The Proud Bird" amongst the warbirds and watch all of the planes landing. Its loud but to me its very relaxing.
Best spot is THE IN-and-OUT on Sepulveda Blvd. in Westchester, when the runway is 24 R and/or 24 L. I ate a DoubleDouble Animal Style and a fry and the planes were scaring the crap out of me!! Jon you should go there and show us your meal and the planes!!! I should have
Here in Toronto we have spotting views right at the runways. i suggest you come visit! we don't get as much of a variety of airlines but it is still good! Psst... we got Transaero from Russia!
The best spot is on the tarmac! (where i work) i'am a ramp agent so i get to drive the tugs around the airport and i think i got the best view right on the taxiway :)
3:00 seems every Hollywood movie I've ever seen that has a plane landing, has been shot from that exact same spot and same time of day. Dawn/dusk always adds a special "atmosphere" to the miracle that is aviation.
I have a question, why is the B737 Southwest 0:24 having flashing landing lights? I have never seen that before, is it maybe because of the camera? great vid btw!
How did you get a view like that? if i tried that at my local airport and stood outside the gates next to the road thats right before the runway im sure airport security would see me and ask me to leave.
Pulsating lights is a research technology which, it is hoped, will scare birds from flying into the flightpath of landing aircraft. SWA happens to be an airline with this option on some of its aircraft. Google will reveal more information.
@ 0:20 Why were the aircraft's light dimming like that? I've loved planes since i was 6 and currently live 5 miles from JFK were I can see the planes landing on 4R and have never seen anything like this.
@focaatdisney It is a setting on the landing lights switch i think, i think it is much like headlights on trains, exept to warn deer? or something like that...
Being at the airport dawn ,dusk and nighttime is the most beautiful thing . The beauty of the plane comes out around dusk or dawn because of the sun reflecting the awesome liveries and just watching them is a wonderful sight . This has to be the best non - FSX video you have .
Did you have any problems with airport police? I've been down there spotting a few times, and they come out and boot me every time, even though I always stay out of restricted areas...
What's up with the flashing landing lights on the Southwest 737 at 0:17 and the CRJ at 0:48. It doesn't seem like it's the camera because other aircraft did not have the flashing. Anyone know??? Great shots by the way Jon. Especially the last one... It looked awesome!
Airports, and videos of airports at dusk/night are euphoric to me. I dont really know how to describe the atmosphere. Its crazy. This video is almost like therapy.
@Jon5700 holy crap those graphics are freaking amazing. You must have a super computer worth like millions. anyway nice job on those vids. what airport is that?
I got the BEST spot! i work at LAX on the ramp, im a ramp agent for UPS it is really fucking cool being so close to the planes especially for me since i want to be a pilot. I'am a wing walker aswell so when we pushback the plane for taxi im literally standing in the taxi way!
Can someone please tell me: Why are the landing lights flashing left and right? I have no knowledge on lights so can some pilot reply to this please? Thank you. BTW great video Jon!
Aww that's awesome, Jon!!! I was there 2 weeks ago taking some footage from the park near In-N-Out on Sepulveda. Can't wait to get my results for the LA Sheriff Dept so I can get out of Screw Jersey and head to Cali. Where were you filming from? Nice work as usual. Kudos!!!
You see Jon I don't see why you don't become a pilot. I mean you like being around planes (obviously), and you pretty much know how to fly the so why don't you? Does it not appeal to you.
@RobinhooodGFX I can assure you it's not the same. are you a real pilot? probably not, but i am, and just because someone plays a home flight simulator that is not really accurate does not mean they can magically become a pilot. That is just ignorance and that mentality makes it twice as hard to learn to properly fly.
@Xplaneflyer10 I never said being able to fly in a simulator qualifies one to be a pilot. I said it's pretty much the same thing minus getting a feel for the aircraft and other tiny things. Many and most of the things found in the sim cover the basic principles for flight. Look what we have here, someone who just got their private? ; )
@RobinhooodGFX the sim only covers the basic principles, so it is not the same thing technically ;) the feel of the aircraft is not minutia....not at all....that is an insurmountable difference between a sim and a real aircraft. in flight sim you can't really feel the need for rudder, cant hear hiccups in the engine etc.....look what we have here, someone who just got their sport pilot? lol
@Xplaneflyer10 You know what you're right. I don't why we have double i's anymore. Instrument Ratings are over-rated(no pun intended). Which may I remind you, you only need 3 of the 40 hours required for the certificate in an actual airplane. Those remaining 37 hours of simulation, meh, useless.
@RobinhooodGFX no, i think simulators are good, in regards to real aviation, they should be used to practice instrument proceduresa, and you should not fully rely on the aerodynamic principles presented in these sims. Sims can only get so close, i actually use X-plane as i do believe the flightmodel is superior, but it is really easy to use for instrument stuff too. Also, if im not mistaken, 20-30 hrs of the 40hrs required for the instrument rating can be completed in a certified sim.
@TheAmazingGamer123 Becoming a pilot is a lot more easier said than actually being done, on many factors including physical limitations and financial limitations. Not trying to imply anything here, but actually becoming an airline pilot is quite hard. However, anyone can become one on the GA side of things provided they have the money.
Isn't it nice to see a video once and a while that doesn't have loud, annoying rock music added to it?
