  • Time signature? Is it just 4/4? I feel dumb that I can't pinpoint it.

  • @lfthering No it's in a complex time signature. Broken down into beats/accents it's

    4

    3+3+3+3+2+4

    4+4+4+4

    Repeat

    2

    4+2+4+2+4+2+2 (Repeated)

  • didn't jason moran do EXACTLY the same thing, like 10 years ago... bandwagon's 'gently drifting south' ...? i'm all for originality - WHEN IT'S ORIGINAL ! ! ! in a sense, THIS IS american music - kmart, target, coke, pepsi. how 'bout some art for the rest of the world?

  • The reason why I love jazz music.. No matter how short each piece is... You go on a journey throught the music and get lost in it.. a 5 min track sometimes feels more like 10 mins because your lost in the music.. Jazz music is one of a kind.

  • There is songs that you listen to, like, and forget about after some time. And there is songs like this. Songs that sound like there is no other way to arrange the notes on a piece of paper. Songs that sound like they have ever been there, and will ever be. To me, this is one of these songs. Damn Robert Glasper makes me spiritual!

  • No matter what race you are, what country you come from- this piece is inspiring.

  • cool sound..... sounds like a 5:45 long intro....

  • This gives me chills..

  • This was ridiculously good, until it said "Jazz is America".

    WTF was that about?

  • @apananus Well... Jazz is a product of America, so I'd say it makes sense.

  • Amazing piano work! This guy is just phenomenal

  • This piece is all about sincerity of a soul

  • This music speaks to me

  • Wow. My mind is blown away. Did he just reharmonize 'Hail to the Chief' at the end? Man, this dude is beyond words.

  • my my oh my...my heart is warm

  • Brilliant. I love the MLK dubbed voice.

  • great style!! Robert Glasper is a big influence for many young jazz pianists I know.

  • that's just awesome. the best music i've heard recently... glad i got here by chance, this really deserved to be seen and heard.

  • Im happy That Robert is here with us. We are truly blessed.

  • Goosebumps

  • You are amazing, what a beautifull melody.

  • I've read the comments on this tune and I think that it's the intention of every musician, to bring about the type of reaction from his listeners that Robert Glasper gets with this tune. I would like to just once in my lifetime to be able to play with this much feeling and get this kind of reponse.

  • @Timbalero561 i signed in just to thumb up this comment. i agree with you so much.

  • @Timbalero561 Than do it. The world is yours.

  • @Timbalero561 > Great comment!

  • @shestudios Thanks!

  • This is brilliant!

  • I don't usually listen to this kind of music but there is something about this piece that touches you, its amazin' I'm gonna have to listen to a lot more of it!

  • I just come back from a live of robert glasper experiment in paris. It was good as fuck, rob g. and Chris dada just kill this. and Thanks for the J Dilla Tribute at the end. RIP J DILLA.

  • @seboufdu59 Can't wait to see him in November. Love Dilla.

  • Woohoo, you can see his hands! Transcription made easier much? XD Give me a break, am only a drummer. Killing music.

  • love him. amazing. lol

  • like this version way more than the album version !!!! more smooth, more feeling !!! simply great !!!

  • I think its a giant leap to compare Barack Obama to the most revolutionary speaker ever to live on the earth... but... still great.

  • @fstball4110 Interesting perspective. I see it more of a 'look how far we've come' relationship. King preaching about equality, and perseverance, and sacrifice - and then Obama, a testament of progress. Powerful song.

  • This is gorgeous.

  • WE SHALL...........

    beautiful composition!

  • I can't even tell you how many times I've repeated this... Just Beautiful!!!

  • Reminds me Of the Esbjorn Svensson Trio (RIP). Absolutely superb!

  • Very beautiful opening, but the music is boring during the speeches.

  • Mmm...food!

  • Something that bring peace to mind in a world of heartache and stress,Yet gives us the motivation to keep pressing forward in spite of, a breif pause in life, getting a 2nd wind for a race we can't give up, the race is not to the swift but to those who endure to the end.

  • yea dude for a minute there i thought that was lebron james lmfao

  • "Music of my people." ~Esperanza Spalding

  • he kinda looks like lebron james lol

  • somewhere between crying, and shouting hallejulah. A song couldnt better evoke emtional expression. I feel close to God in music like this.

  • Obama the firsthalf-caste biracial mixed-race president not black

  • Awesome

  • pretty awesome

  • pure bliss.

  • Robert Glasper, your music is inspirational. Although I don't really care for Obama.

  • gjbhn

  • I'm gonna go ahead and say that ABisopht could be the biggest rookie on earth

  • I agree with qualityfreshness... Music is simply an experience to be shared and appreciated, not judged.

Did you HEAR or LISTEN to Glasper's composition?... it was said best at the end... "Music, we need when language fails us, but we can not remain silent"... Every musician is different, this is what makes music so special... listen again...

  • beautiful translation of music and mind

  • Music is an experience to be shared and appreciated, not judged. One cannot say that one musician is better than another if they both are truly expressing themselves. One man's creativity is no greater than another's.

  • well said

  • If all you hear in this is "smooth and slow," then I think you need to listen again, and keep listening. Speed is only one aspect of music. It's like judging how good food is based on it's temperature- how hot or cold it is. People like players like Glasper because of what is implied - the space between the notes and the feeling it evokes - plus rhythmically he is hipper than anyone else out there - check out The Robert Glasper Experiment. Not sure if Eldar could hang with those guys.

  • im tired of all the eldar's out there, all the guys who practiced in their closets for 11 hours a day practicing chops, chops, and only speed, while robert glasper, brad mehldau, and others like bill evans and mulgrew miller fucking know what music is, its subtle, it had substinence, and most of of all robert glasper knows how to make a song flow better than anyone ive ever heard

  • the fact is, Eldar can be as smooth and slow as this but I bet this guy wont be able to go as fast as Eldar. And that my friend is what they call versatility.

  • eldar cannot play as beautifully as robert glasper dude, no way, no one alive can today cept for maybe brad mehldau, anyways his flow is just incredible

  • dude, Eldar is a prodigy, they will NEVER compare him to Glasper. They usually compare him to Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea and Art Tatum. *and I'm not making this stuff up* It might make YOU upset cause YOU PERSONALLY prefer Glasper to Eldar. I personally prefer 7up to grape juice but I KNOW which one is better.

  • @ABisopht G & B by Glasper, listen to it.

  • @paisteguy799 so dont you think that mehldau, glasper, evans, etc. had a period in their life where they practised for hours (5hours, 7hours, 11 hours.. doesnt matter) "in their closet" EACH and EVERY day??

i think i have to disappoint you.. and i dont really get your point.

in this song it seems quite "simple" what he plays, but that doesnt mean, that he spent a lot of time for exercising his chops..

  • Man, talk about a relevant jazz video.

  • lol, Robert Glasper use Ipod

  • ...sweet melodic revolution.

  • ooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg this is crazy

  • Truly incredible.. it almost makes me wanna cry...

  • It's amazing that Dr. King's speech is so musical. Glasper accompanies his inflections so well.

  • @drifteromega Well said, Dr. King had incredible emotional phrasing... this piece takes it to another level imho.

  • im so jealous, i tried to get tickets but all sold out!

  • I saw Robert at Gilles Peterson WorldWide Awards last night... one of the performances of the night. awesome.

  • Eh...Baik ni...

  • Dope!!!

  • i love it!!!

  • very special.... words can´t explain...

  • This is so amazing it is beyond words. Many thanks.

  • Simple Beautiful

  • the beggining states his voice so perfectly ... no more words

  • I keep coming back to this over and over. Those opening changes nail me every time.

  • tay0, I gave your comment a thumbs up. I do the same and those changes get me as well.

  • @tay0 What do you mean by, "opening changes"??? Just curious.

  • @DarkHalo08 He means the chord changes, or chord progression, at the beginning of the song.

  • @tay0 Word.

  • If you do not feel the strength provide to you in this song.........

  • oh my goodness

  • Awesome!!

  • Sensual, evocative, filled with the quiet longing of souls seeking justice, the impressionistic chords reminiscent of Shirley Horn, Bill Evans, the quiet side of Oscar Peterson, all blending together in a sound signifying a new confidence & a readiness to take one's place at the table of brotherhood.
