  • Nice vid. I wishi could put a cooler out like that but I would go out and find two empty bins :( no fruit and no berries.

  • Great info... blackberries are indeed high in antioxidants.

  • The blackberry maybe indeed be a great berry but i must disagree with you its not the highest in antioxidants. The blueberry rubel that has not been bred with any other varites and is still a wild variety in nature is the most powerfull antioxidant of all fruits. You can check the inernet Its true.Nice information about blackberries. The darker the fruit the better it is for you !!

  • something good gonna happen

  • Man, I love blackberries... It would be nice to grow them in my backyard.

  • Your video is very interesting .My blackberry plant is producing fruit for the first time so I cannot wait. Thank you.

  • How do you keep the deer and birds away from them?

  • Hey Survival Doc, I purchased some blackberry from walmart this past year they are growing ok in containers but I am not sure what type they are. They are the vine type with long ones. the vines are not actually canes though...they are very tender and bend easy....will they eventually become more firm like the ones I have been seeing in your video?

  • @blackboy424 yes

  • @thenewsurvivalist :) awesome thx....what spacing did you use for your berries?? I am going to put them in the ground once I figure out how much room I need to set aside......

  • HI Doc! I would like to know how careful you have to be if you dig up a blackberry bush for replanting and what part of season you should do it in. Second, I'd like to know how much root room they need. I was considering planting a bucket garden. Using the large spackle size buckets or lined crab bushel baskets.

  • @MOM1NATOR The key is to keep the new transplants watered. Some of them make it and some of them do not. I transplant them in the Spring or Fall but I don't know when the best time is. I don't know about growing them in buckets. I don't know why not.

  • blackberry's are good but look at the goji berry plant orac levals

  • we have 3 large blackberry bushes we have found on our new property (we have leaped into small scale homesteading). I was wondering how we would help these plants multiple into more bushes?? can we use a rooting hormone and plant a cutting to create a new bush??? Any advice on this would be appreciated.....your substantially large blackberry patch is impressive

  • @soiledmcribs Blackberries will spread on their own. Sometimes I dig up new shoots and transplant them in a different location. The canes will also root themselves if on the ground so you can probably root them.

  • sir read your reply messege so can you send me a blackberry trunk 3 pcs so i can try it coz i try to search here in philippines a blackberry but no body have one here pls sir can you send me trunk of you blackberry here is my name and address 17 filinvest road 1 batasan hills quezon city . # dennis balbas

  • @boholhunter29 Sorry, I don't mail plants. First of all I'm not in the plant business. There are also strict governmental regulations regarding mailing live plants. Please check with someone who is in the business. There are a lot of them.

  • If you plant more than one b berry plant, what is the spacing? Thanks

  • hello suvival doc you ah good blackberry video can i have a seed of blackberry coz iwant to try to grow blackberry here in may backyard in philippines pls! sir . send me some seed of different varity of your blackberry. and this is my address: danicop antequera bohol philippines my name is fransisco vallente.

thank for you very good video i like it a lot .

  • @boholhunter29 You have to grow them from young plants rather than from seeds. I've never grown one from seed.

  • Im making black berry wine and i was thinking about cleaning up the wild patch next to my house (weeding, staking for better access, rowing them up, and increasing the patch) thank you for the information

  • I'm growing tons of blackberries, raspberries, boysenberries, strawberries, blueberries, grapes & currants in my yard (along with many other things-this is JUST the berry list) & I'm in heaven whenever I go out there to harvest! (which is 2x a day right now!). What a wonderful world we live in, take advantage of your ability to grow your own food people. It is natural & so REAL. It is so worth it to share with your family & it brings you all closer together. wish you all well.

  • you should look in to food forests

  • I am getting many blackberries now. I have different places where they grow and some ripen a month earlier than other places. Very tasty. Great video.

  • I live in the Faroe Islands, where temperatures are between 8-25 C degrees (most likely aprox. 14C) .. We have not so many sunny days, but long days in the summer..

Do you think that Blackberries can grow here? og maybe some sort of Blackberry?

Black and red currants, gooseberries, strawberries etc. grow here without any trouble .. haven't tried rasberries, blackberries etc..

what do you think ? :)

  • Hey Doc, what type of blackberries do you have planted? How long do you leave the fruiting laterals on these trailing type blackberries? Thanks, love your posts.

  • good video dog you crazy old goat you.

  • What city do you live in Missouri

  • id like to burn one with this guy

  • how can i grow that beard??

  • Black Rasberries have an ORAC level of 77

  • @thegardengirl39 This was the highest I seen on the chart.....oregon ed website

  • Hi I am a cancer survivor for almost a year now, After my treatment I was asked to participate in a study involed Black Rasberries (blackberries are different ) I was then told that Black Rasberries have the Highest ORAC and the study was to see how/if at all benificial they were to throat cancer patients like myself. I ultimately didn't do it, but I went and bought 3 more bushes of Blackberries even with the differance anti oxidants are good eats lots of them!

  • I've told my husband for years now that if something terrible happened like the great depression and most the gocery stores closed down, we would have starvation in epic proportions becaue hardly AYONE knows how to grow their own food any more. It's tragic that this knowlege is dying with my grandparents generation. What you are teaching is important stuff. Thank you for helping some youngins' learn the skills to live self sufficiently.

  • Real economic growth is represented here by the black berry fruit that comes to fruitition in Survival Doc's own garden.

"You reap what you sow" is one of the most fundamental economic laws, and requires no money, but seeds, in contrast to what dominates modern day economics: finance and debt.

  • i just planted 5 wild blackberrys plants that i got from the Missouri dept of conservation i live in putman county in MO great video not sure what kind they are being wild and boy they do have some thorns lol

  • I had a question. I have some wild berries growing in my back yard I just cannot tell what type of blackberry varitey it is. It might be a boysenberry or olallieberries. I have very high quality photos. Please help. I live in Southern California.

  • i think this is the BEST video about blackberry i ever seen!!WoW

  • Hey Doc, I just bought 2 blackberry plants from Home Depot for 6 bucks a plant.

A few q's: I live in PA, the box says to plant in April-May, What should I do in the meantime? Specifically, should I be watering them now or let them sit and water before planting? Did you prepare the soil or just dig and plant?

Thanks for this video, I made the decision to definitely get these after watching your videos!

  • @breakneck14 Don't let the roots dry out completely. If the roots are in soil just keep it from drying out until you can plant them. If they are not in soil wrap them in shredded paper or something similar and don't let it dry out completely. Even better, if the ground is not frozen, go ahead and plant them now but then cover them thoroughly with hay or mulch to protect them from freezing until April when you should be able to uncover them. I don't know much about PA weather so ask around.

  • @thenewsurvivalist

Good blackberry video! I'm setting posts for mine. I bought the thornless brand last year. I expect a good picking this year.

  • I believe what you are saying about ORAC of blackberries but can you site a source??

  • @FlowerChildFreeBird I don't recall the source. There is some question about the highest, some say one some another. Probably depends on the variety of berry and how it is grown. Here is one I just found quickly that actually said blueberries are higher in ORAC value. Regardless, the point is blackberries are up there near the top according to all sources: ars period usda period gov/is/pr/1999/990208.htm

  • @FlowerChildFreeBird Do you think he's writing a report? lol

  • @rjravaz; Is there a problem with siting sources?? It increases credibility.... otherwise it is technically called "hear-say"...... did you read his response by chance?? In his video he said "blackberries have the highest ORAC levels." When I asked for a source he told me that what he said in his video may or may not even be true.

so that is why it is ALWAYS good to ask for a source.

  • @FlowerChildFreeBird Hi I just wanted to say that as a cancer patient I was asked to be involed in a study at OSU James Cancer Hospital. I was told that Black RASBERRIES were the highest in ORAC and want me to consume them for a period of time to see if they were benificial to throat cancer patients. I asked lots of questions but ultimately didn't do it. I did go and buy more blackberries bushes for my back yard! The anti oxidants are good no matter what kind of berry it is.

  • @rjravaz

I wasn't challenging him or even saying he is wrong I just wanted a source.

Can't always believe things people tell you. Not that they are wrong. someone who speaks with authority should always have a source to back it up. That's all I was seeking, a source. :)

  • @FlowerChildFreeBird its a university of ohio study

  • @FlowerChildFreeBird he is right, i went to wickipedia and just typed in blackberry and then scroll to the end of the page where all the references are there are about 10 to 12 links to things like national nutrition council and the like. they are all a little difrent from one another i dont recall a single one that listed it as the top but BBs were consistanly in top listing. more difficult to grow here in texas so if u live in the south i have my own BB bush growing tips. THANKS DOCK!!!

  • @emperorbajara Thanks! I'll have to look at those. Sound interesting.

  • Hello

looking at your videos, understanding importance of growing most of your own food if not all. Do you think someday you'll do a video on dwarf trees or semi dwarf trees. I still don't know how big a dwarf you actually get that the height and the width of the tree. Thank you so much I appreciate all your help and sit this Saturday I will be installing mod my bushes are talked about in the next the trees. Thank you

  • @memberson I have several video on my youtube channel about fruit trees, but I didn't discuss dwarf trees in detail. The size of the dwarf tree depends on the type of tree and the variety. Check with a nursery where trees are sold for specifics, including growing zones, sizes, etc. I buy my trees by mail order from Stark Bros. in Troy, MO. They will mail you a catalog that has a lot of information. Search to find their web site and request a catalog.

  • Hello

thank you for responding to my note, I understand you were singing one of your videos that you have fruit trees. I am about to embark upon getting six of them or maybe just for a one as you are they worth the trouble of spraying in disease and things like that. If you had to do all a again would you still plan trees. My second question is are these dwarf trees are full-size

  • @memberson Yes, fruit trees are well worth the trouble! I just planted an additional five fruit trees. I love them! All my trees are dwarf or semi-dwarf. That's what I recommend.

  • HELLO

HOW ARE YOU I AM DOING THE SAME THING YOU ARE DOING , I STOPED IN TO HOME AN GOT ONE OF EACH ONE OF THERE BERRY PLANTS I WILL GROW THEM AND USE THE CUTTING TO MAKE MORE PLANTS, ALSO ONLINE I GOT THIS PLANT CALLED A (Black Butte Blackberry Plant) IT GROWS A VERY BIG BERRY THAT IS Y I GOT IT , DO YOU HAVE THIS PLANT.

  • @memberson No I haven't heard of that one. There are many varieties. I have several, most grow big berries but one in particular, a thorn variety, grows VERY big berries. I recommend thornless. I'll probably never plant a thorn berry plant again-too hard to prune and hurts too much to pick and tie up. I buy mine from Stark Bros. in Troy, MO where I also buy my fruit trees.

  • love your videos. got a tip for you, instead of freezing the berries in a storage bag, first place them on a baking sheet to freeze, then into the storage bag. they freeze far more rapidly that way and that helps retain their texture for when your decide to eat them.

  • BLACKBERRY WINE!

  • Thats AWESOME about the 2 year canes... thank you!! So do you think I could cut some and start it rooting? or would that not work, would I have to uproot the plant and re-plant it?

  • @TheMadzymoo My blackberry canes are always shooting off new plants that can be dug up and replanted. When the growth end comes in contact with the ground, it takes root and you end up having a plant with roots at both ends. You can dig these out and plant new plants. So I assume you can root them for new plants. But it might be easier to root them by sticking the growth end into the ground, allowing it to develop roots, and then dig it up and plant it (it will be upside down but will correct.)

  • I was wondering if there is a way to tell if my blackberry bush is still alive, I never got around to putting it in the ground and over the winter it was outside the branches are brown right now it is Feb what do you suggest I do.

  • @Megzm6 I don't know where you live or if the ground there is frozen. If not, I'd go ahead and plant it now and then watch this Spring to see if it comes alive. Otherwise, I'd plant it in a pot and keep it inside until Spring and see if it shows any sign of life. If it doesn't show any new growth, budding of leaves, or any sign of life by this Spring then I'd say it is done for.

  • @Megzm6 oh I forgot I am in northern Florida it does freeze occasionally , it is in a pot now I totally forgot about it over last year and left it outside in the pot over the winter . I looked at it and it is brown right now and pliable branches and I can't pull it out of the pot easily. I am just guessing maybe it is still alive.

  • I love blackberries. I'm going to plant some Kiowa in a week or 2. Have you ever grown this variety?

  • @mrjon75 No I'm not familiar with that variety. But to be honest with you it has been so long since I planted mine that I don't remember the varieties (at least 3.) Good luck with yours, thanks for subscribing, and keep up the good work!

  • how to grow blackberries from seeds?

  • Thank you! Great Video...keep them coming!

  • You should make more garden videos.

  • Over here in the UK we are over run with brambles, and so a lot of people, myself included don't bother to grow them.

After seeing your video though I'm really tempted to give it a go.

  • Thank you!! My family thinks I'm loco I also freeze the majority of my harvest to can in the cooler months. Love the videos too.

  • Hi, I heard that the blueberry & the goji berry are healthiest. Of course, I love them all, but I never heard the blackberry being healthier with more antioxidants than the others. thanks for the video. we all appreciate it!

  • Where do you get the seeds?

  • @LER77 I have never planted blackberry seeds. I purchased the plants by mail order from Stark Brothers located in Missouri. The ship all across the nation. If you buy blackberry plants I recommend you buy a thornless variety. Otherwise, when it comes time to prune you will have a painful job on your hands. It is also much more comfortable to pick from thornless plants and even weeding is much easier.

  • Blackberries are my favorite fruit also. We have plenty of wild blackberries in Maine as long as you can get to them before the bears do!

  • love the beard

  • Remember, not everything is best pruned in winter, any of the Prunus family require pruning in summer to avoid silver leaf!

  • @chunkyfecalbreakfast Good point!

  • You made me so hungary, blackberries are my favorite. Here in Texas, our wild ones have already been harvested about a month ago. I guess I'll just have to wait till next year. :(

  • how long did it take for your plant to get that big?

  • @parlusk By the second year they are plenty big. They grow fast and will produce some berries the first year you plant them and a lot the second.

  • As always, a wealth of information!

  • thank you great info :)

  • we have huge backberry bushes all over our property. now i know how to prune them to tame them down a bit
