Hi Jodi, girl you have a very beautiful body, If I was those guys, I would be making love to you instead of all that hating and backbiting. I remember watching Don Kirshner interviewing Dickey G. on his show and he was complaining about how white people treated blacks in the music business. Damn, Dickie G. was treating Black music acts even worst. Well I am glad you survived Jodi W. and you are not just beautiful on the inside but have a delicious beautiful body on the outside.
It's so sad that so many groups were cheated out of their money. I don't know how people who did that to them could even sleep at night, and wonder if they are really resting in peace....

@jwatley1 I understand you said you weren't paid a red cent as far as royalties are concerned. Why would you continue recording with Solar for so many albums if this was correct? How come or did any other groups get treated like Shalamar such as The Whispers or Lakeside when it came to receiving royalties? And did Leon Sylvers receive his correct issue?
@AvariciousMnF I was young, keep in mind I was 17 at the start and 23 when i quit with zero knowledge about the 'business' of music as I mentioned. My time in the group was short, 6 years. As I stated wanting to buy a house and being mocked was a turning point. I wasn't the first nor last as I said in Part Two and in my Unsung interview. It's what one 'does' with the knowledge once learned. I can't speak for the other groups. To this day, I've never received a penny for any Shalamar record sold
@jwatley1 You have the most beautiful almond shape eyes. I wondered too why Babyface was not interviewed considering he did "For The Lover In You" remake and he was interviewed for the Debarge Unsung.
I'll admit I was mad at you at first :-) because Unsung did make it appear like you were the one holding out from a possible reunion. But after watching these videos I have a better understanding of your decisions and this is one fan that support you whole heartedly.

@jwatley1 I was a huge Jermaine Stewart fan and I feel he should have his own UNSUNG segment. You mentioned he was one of your best friends. Do you know when he found out he was sick? Did Jermaine intentionally not disclose his illness to the public?
@AvariciousMnF Additionally, when touring (which we did all the time) I was paid a salary each week. As a teen/young adult, a few hundred dollars seemed like a lot especially back then - until you find out that you should be receiving thousands of dollars per week, per show, etc. When I speak to aspiring artists or when asked in interviews, I've always encouraged people to learn the 'business', get educated and credible advisors, etc. If you watch Unsung you will see how common it is
@jwatley1 Wow I thank you for taking the time to explain the situation, and for sharing your past experiences. I'm terribly sorry you went through that whole ordeal. Hopefully people coming up in the music industry can take heed with what you said in your unfiltered, and in your comments, and possibly, they can learn from this, and won't have to go through what you've experienced. @glasscitadel12 exactly. what people fail to understand, this is the music BUSINESS, not music FRIENDSHIP the public fail to understand that consumers have jobs and their check was not going to be cut short at the end of the week, but when selling millions of records and you're walking home with a salary, and not what you're owed, that meant their check was cut short, and employee will become unsettled and leave and that's just what Jody did. This entire series was very educational and even though I'm only 21 and was not around when the songs mentioned were riding high on the charts, I am still an old soul and love old school music. It's what I've grown up listening to. I've read about Shalamar and watched several interviews with the members. It was refreshing to hear more of the truth about the group. Thanks, Ms. Watley, for posting these videos. You kept it real in a dignified way. I'm a fan of you, the group & Individual members.

She poured her heart out sharing her curt time with Shalamar, (though it probably felt like a life time for her) this was a REAL confession with passion of presenting the truth, something UNSUNG failed. I've been reprimanded (hahaha!) by a non-JW-fan yvessaintlaurent88 of acknowledging my work days at Solar and me knowing and seeing all. Everything conveyed was true. Jody, always a lady, did her job, remained professional.

@MrCovering if Gerald Brown would had continued with Shalamar, problems would only had escalated because Gerald was about business and Griffey knew nothing of the music business, but he was a great extortionist (i will give him props for that), I never received a complete check during my days at Solar. That was a learning process Jody had to experience to know the difference between being a menial bondsmaid, or becoming a real recording artist. I'm glad she choose the latter, aren't you! :-)
@TheElfcounsel, I agree. And i also believe that most of those Shalamar fans followed Jody over to MCA records when her solo career started. I bet that was why Dick Griffey was mean spirited to Jody when they crossed paths at that function. What he really wanted to say was Jody you took all those Shalamar fans with you when you left. Jody held that group together and when she left it was equal to a car trying to run without any gas.
@MrCovering The new version of the group did garnered two hits after Jody's departure, this was purely from curiousity, a wanted desire and hope of people reliving their days of the original Shalamar, but, three years later, there was no hope left when LOOKING FOR A NEW LOVE was released. Griffey knew WHAT he'd lost at that last meeting with Jody when he broke down, nearly begging her to stay. He kewn her leaving was foretelling what was to come to Solar's #1 act and it's company as a whole.

@TheElfcounsel Also, Jeffrey Daniels was taught the "moon walk" by other dancers and was one of many choreographers that MJ used....he did not create the dance nor did he act as the sole person teaching MJ...he helped to popularize it yes but he had help from people like Cooley Jaxson.
@stanleyballard exactly, which is what i stated early, he was taught by Casper, Cooly and another dancer Dane from the Electric boogaloos. Actually MJ always credited all choreographers that worked for him. Michael Peters and Travis Payne and that's why Daniel never promoted himself as such until MJ's demise. Jeffrey was used as a backing dancer. Only. The problem I have with Daniel is he's now promoting himself as teaching Michale, refusing to share credit of those who taught him and MJ!
@stanleyballard another missing piece from the puzzle is that the "moonwalk" was a tap dance move that was used as far back as the fifties, w/ dancers like Bill Bailey. A good part of his moves have tap dance prototypes.
@MrCovering sorry for my late replys, but when running a growing company priorities must be primary and never overlooked. One must lead by example, and never be led! But let's continue. Jody was not oly the glue that kept the group together, but Solar, as well. Other females of the company always talked highly of her. Shalamar members, Jeffrey Daniel and Carolyn Griffey have both visit this thread and voiced their opinions of Jody's talent, entertaining and vocal skills saying her talents were less than desirable, but yet know deep inside that today's line up of the group couldn't fill a venue if each chair was laced with $50.00 bills, well, maybe people would show, but would collect the dough and use the bills to purchase a Neyo ticket. Shalamar, it's sad to be at the bottom, looking up!
What's the real payoff for Jody reuniting for a reunion, a group now owned by Dick's daughter, Carolyn? She, helping her ex-singing partners to make a decent salary, or a comeback (for once since her departure) ...I don't think so! The Music business is a franchise, not FANchise, not FRIENDchise and people tend to forget when living on a faded memory of what once was, is totally gone. Jody, keep building your brand, and let Carolyn build hers. But not on your name!
I have one question.... where's the SHALAMAR quad team? They've seemed frightened and scared since Jody pulled out the BIG GUN, Gerald Brown. Jody offering her assistance to the new girl and becoming friends with Miki Free speaks volume of her goodness of wanting the group to secceed even after she went her own way, and she became a bigger success than the group ever could imagine, so when folk have said "Oh she's bitter!" why would one be bitter over a situation that failed regaining it's heydays fo the 80's, singing in revival shows, performing the same show and dance routines with a female replacement that sounds like a man!
Gearld Brown has always been my favorite Shalamar lead singer, he and Jody's voice blend so well together and I'd wondered why he was not included in the Shalamar segment. Thank you, Mr. Brown for explaining your disappearance and thank Miss Watley for giving the full explanation, of her leaving the group and why the group failed to hold up. It has bothered me why people blamed Jody for the group's failure when she had no hand in it's falling.

@TheElfcounsel , She has ran me away from so many websites But i am not leaving YouTube. And from what i've heard she doesn't even speak to certain of her family members, After her parents died most of her family members scattered around living like vagabonds wherever nightfall catches them. She was there lifeline in terms of finances paying their way, But after her money situation bankruptcy, foreclosures, she can barely support herself these days. I think that's why she's so tormented!
This has been a very informative and thorough explanation of Jody's side of what happend and Gerald's...believe that it took a lot for Ms. Watley to reveal all of this history and some of it brought back painful memories. Now I see why she would never wants to do a Shalamar song live in concert over the many times I have seen her in NYC, DC & Chicago. But you made that group memorable....your vocals had a very good tone & distinct style and it showcased so much potential.

What I've learned throughtout life, when a snake is born he follows what nature's course directs him to do, slither aroud to see who's life he can destroy, when he shaeds his skin he'll unravel from the inert peeling and that same snake will emerge as the same snake, just with newer flay, and when he dies, he'll pass on as a dead snake. And that be the case for this SNAKE!
Shalamar wasn't going to last because of shady business/greed from the start referenced in Pt 2 or 3 barely covered in Unsung, beyond the egos, sexism. Brown not being included was to keep that fact obscured reinforcing the shadiness still exists. Running number was shady too, no care for Jody just the money. As her fan I never thought of reunions and all but I can see why she steers clear of these ppl from her past it's called growth, wisdom and self worth
@chicsensibilities Now that I know, I don't WANT a Shalamar reunion. I respect Howard and Jeffrey's talents but I can't look at them the same. It's good for Jody to stay clear of them.
@chicsensibilities Exactly, but I also believe if Griffey gave credence to Shalamar (and JW) then, as he did when Carolyn joined the group there would've been a sense of survival for the group. Solar lost it's nucleus that created the 'Solar sound.' Jody Watley. Like Diana Ross set the standard sound and style for Motown, so did Watley, therefore when she bid Shalamar and Solar "Hasta la vista, where are my keys?" the company and the group met a slow death of dying fast !

Brown, being an ex-lead singer of the group and not asked to join the interview was very was unethical on Griffey's part, again, exposing his unethical business acumen and shadiness
Jody, there are so many of us, your ex Solar colleagues that have followed this series having your back. We're so happy that after all these years, you've finally opened up and allowing, not us, because we shared your experience of your unfair treatment from Griffey and others from Solar staff members, but sharing THAT period with the public. Also, why no industry exec. has also told JD, Leon & HH that in today's digital age of blogging, chat rooms, etc; they look & sound bitter w/envy in their interviews when speaking of JW; again the court of public opinion matters in showbiz! Everyone's in their 50's & a reunion w/JW has not taken place in this lifetime! He comes across as arrogant and jealous.By including Brown Watley really shows 'cajones' like when she left that organization another reason they have problems with her is my guess also her independence. The others are still on the family payroll. Age does not always bring maturity or greater character development.

How come or did any other groups get treated like Shalamar such as The Whispers or Lakeside when it came to receiving royalties? And did Leon Sylvers receive his correct issue?

@AvariciousMnF I was young, keep in mind I was 17 at the start and 23 when i quit with zero knowledge about the 'business' of music as I mentioned. My time in the group was short, 6 years. As I stated wanting to buy a house and being mocked was a turning point. I wasn't the first nor last as I said in Part Two and in my Unsung interview. It's what one 'does' with the knowledge once learned. I can't speak for the other groups. To this day, I've never received a penny for any Shalamar record sold

@AvariciousMnF Additionally, when touring (which we did all the time) I was paid a salary each week. As a teen/young adult, a few hundred dollars seemed like a lot especially back then - until you find out that you should be receiving thousands of dollars per week, per show, etc. When I speak to aspiring artists or when asked in interviews, I've always encouraged people to learn the 'business', get educated and credible advisors, etc. If you watch Unsung you will see how common it is

This entire series was very educational and even though I'm only 21 and was not around when the songs mentioned were riding high on the charts, I am still an old soul and love old school music. It's what I've grown up listening to. I've read about Shalamar and watched several interviews with the members. It was refreshing to hear more of the truth about the group. She poured her heart out sharing her curt time with Shalamar, (though it probably felt like a life time for her) this was a REAL confession with passion of presenting the truth, something UNSUNG failed. I've been reprimanded (hahaha!) by a non-JW-fan yvessaintlaurent88 of acknowledging my work days at Solar and me knowing and seeing all. Everything conveyed was true. Jody, always a lady, did her job, remained professional.

@MrCovering if Gerald Brown would had continued with Shalamar, problems would only had escalated because Gerald was about business and Griffey knew nothing of the music business, but he was a great extortionist (i will give him props for that), I never received a complete check during my days at Solar. That was a learning process Jody had to experience to know the difference between being a menial bondsmaid, or becoming a real recording artist. I'm glad she choose the latter, aren't you! :-)

@TheElfcounsel, I agree. And i also believe that most of those Shalamar fans followed Jody over to MCA records when her solo career started. I bet that was why Dick Griffey was mean spirited to Jody when they crossed paths at that function. What he really wanted to say was Jody you took all those Shalamar fans with you when you left. Jody held that group together and when she left it was equal to a car trying to run without any gas.

@MrCovering The new version of the group did garnered two hits after Jody's departure, this was purely from curiousity, a wanted desire and hope of people reliving their days of the original Shalamar, but, three years later, there was no hope left when LOOKING FOR A NEW LOVE was released. Griffey knew WHAT he'd lost at that last meeting with Jody when he broke down, nearly begging her to stay. He kewn her leaving was foretelling what was to come to Solar's #1 act and it's company as a whole.

Carolyn has ownship of the name and brand of 'Shalamar' meaning all moneis and business goes straight through Carolyn, first. So if Jody were ever to consider a reunion (which we know that's never happening) she would be working for Griffey once again. What a pitty that the two men once esacped prison, only to return with no goodtime/work time in their fate. They've been sentenced LIFE w/out parole!

@MrCovering ...if you want to see how out dated Shalamar (Jeffrey, Howard and Carolyn) has become, check out their 'Night to remember" video on 'hit me baby one more time' here on YOUTUBE were they lost to some singer Shaken Stevens on the show, then check out Gearld Brown's Shalamar review performing 'Take that to the back' were they're dressed nice, Gerald hits all his notes and not out of breath, plus he still dances his ass off. There's still some vocalist that can sing and dance, Howard!

@TheElfcounsel Also, Jeffrey Daniels was taught the "moon walk" by other dancers and was one of many choreographers that MJ used....he did not create the dance nor did he act as the sole person teaching MJ...he helped to popularize it yes but he had help from people like Cooley Jaxson.

@stanleyballard exactly, which is what i stated early, he was taught by Casper, Cooly and another dancer Dane from the Electric boogaloos. Actually MJ always credited all choreographers that worked for him. Michael Peters and Travis Payne and that's why Daniel never promoted himself as such until MJ's demise. Jeffrey was used as a backing dancer. Only. The problem I have with Daniel is he's now promoting himself as teaching Michale, refusing to share credit of those who taught him and MJ!

@stanleyballard another missing piece from the puzzle is that the "moonwalk" was a tap dance move that was used as far back as the fifties, w/ dancers like Bill Bailey. A good part of his moves have tap dance prototypes.

Jody was not oly the glue that kept the group together, but Solar, as well. Other females of the company always talked highly of her. What's the real payoff for Jody reuniting for a reunion, a group now owned by Dick's daughter, Carolyn? She, helping her ex-singing partners to make a decent salary, or a comeback (for once since her departure) ...I don't think so! Gearld Brown has always been my favorite Shalamar lead singer, he and Jody's voice blend so well together and I'd wondered why he was not included in the Shalamar segment. Thank you, Mr. Brown for explaining your disappearance and thank Miss Watley for giving the full explanation, of her leaving the group and why the group failed to hold up. It has bothered me why people blamed Jody for the group's failure when she had no hand in it's falling.

@MrCovering sorry for replying so late, i hate to dignify this person with a name, but yvessaintlaurent88 is NOT Missgodiver. Her name is Synirah Allen, but now goes by the title of Sharon Tate, as well as a few youtube characters. Missgodiver is DEFINIETLY Jeffrey Daniel. As you and Stellitogroove remember, once i mentioned a few incidence, names and sexual positions that took place during the early Solar years, he banished himself from this thread.

@MrCovering I have to agree with you that after my discovery of UNFILTERED, I noticed Yvessaintlaurent and her many band of YOUTUBE PERSONALITIES had been following you. She's rather disturbed and need to pop a med real quick to get on track so she can identify with reality and not one's identity. She never comments to a subject but constantly reduplicate her own statements. Her personal writers names must be "CUT, PASTE & REPEAT !"

@TheElfcounsel , She has ran me away from so many websites But i am not leaving YouTube. And from what i've heard she doesn't even speak to certain of her family members, After her parents died most of her family members scattered around living like vagabonds wherever nightfall catches them. She was there lifeline in terms of finances paying their way, But after her money situation bankruptcy, foreclosures, she can barely support herself these days. I think that's why she's so tormented!

This has been a very informative and thorough explanation of Jody's side of what happend and Gerald's...believe that it took a lot for Ms. Watley to reveal all of this history and some of it brought back painful memories. Now I see why she would never wants to do a Shalamar song live in concert over the many times I have seen her in NYC, DC & Chicago. But you made that group memorable....your vocals had a very good tone & distinct style and it showcased so much potential.

Glad to hear Gerald Brown's side of the story , the record business is a snake business, young talented people start out with dreams of grandjure, unaware that the devil's are waiting,and turn that innocent kid into a monster ! Love Jermaine Stewart's music R.I.P. he's buried in Homewood Memorial Gardens cemetary in Homewood,Illinois , could someone tell me why is this talented man that gave so much to the world buried in a unmarked grave? that's a shame !!

Huh? you say what? I can't here you! On UNSUNG, you talked very loud, throwing Brown under the bus, but now you've bitched up since chapter 4. well, it doesn't matter, because it seem as though that call would've been detrimental to Dick. That was great......loved how open and honest you were!!!! I love you Jody!!! You have affected so many peoples lives in a great way!!! To this day (I never told anyone this), when I first saw your Looking for a New Love video as a child...I said to myself when I grow up I want to look just like her...so as your style evolved I would mimic it. I thought you were the ultimate beauty and to this day I incorporate your style into my personal style. Thanks for sharing your life with us!!!!

@PhuckHue2 you have such a good heart, but Griffey was Griffey.....
What I've learned throughtout life, when a snake is born he follows what nature's course directs him to do, slither aroud to see who's life he can destroy, when he shaeds his skin he'll unravel from the inert peeling and that same snake will emerge as the same snake, just with newer flay, and when he dies, he'll pass on as a dead snake. And that be the case for this SNAKE!

Shalamar wasn't going to last because of shady business/greed from the start referenced in Pt 2 or 3 barely covered in Unsung, beyond the egos, sexism. Brown not being included was to keep that fact obscured reinforcing the shadiness still exists. Running number was shady too, no care for Jody just the money. As her fan I never thought of reunions and all but I can see why she steers clear of these ppl from her past it's called growth, wisdom and self worth

@chicsensibilities Now that I know, I don't WANT a Shalamar reunion. I respect Howard and Jeffrey's talents but I can't look at them the same. It's good for Jody to stay clear of them.

@chicsensibilities Exactly, but I also believe if Griffey gave credence to Shalamar (and JW) then, as he did when Carolyn joined the group there would've been a sense of survival for the group. Solar lost it's nucleus that created the 'Solar sound.' Jody Watley. Like Diana Ross set the standard sound and style for Motown, so did Watley, therefore when she bid Shalamar and Solar "Hasta la vista, where are my keys?" the company and the group met a slow death of dying fast !

@chicsensibilities Unsung, in it's hour air time not only 'barely covered' the issues of the group's break up, it managed to uncovered NOTHING! What was the purpose of Maverett's flat, Howard standing in front of the EDMOND'S TOWERS or Jeffrey praying in a Japanesse garden (maybe for a career possibly?). Brown, being an ex-lead singer of the group and not asked to join the interview was very was unethical on Griffey's part, again, exposing his unethical business acumen and shadiness

We're so happy that after all these years, you've finally opened up and allowing, not us, because we shared your experience of your unfair treatment from Griffey and others from Solar staff members, but sharing THAT period with the public. I hope up and coming artist have accept your abd Gearld Brown's lessons of the business to stay up on their game. Gearld, you broke it DOWN!

Also, why no industry exec. has also told JD, Leon & HH that in today's digital age of blogging, chat rooms, etc; they look & sound bitter w/envy in their interviews when speaking of JW; again the court of public opinion matters in showbiz! Everyone's in their 50's & a reunion w/JW has not taken place in this lifetime! Shalamar's legacy is a future lesson in this low down music biz to treat folks right (karma)while you are living, check egos & make amends!

@dpartystarter1 I assume you have also seen Howard Hewett Magic 98.9 interview? The link was posted in an earlier thread. He used the term "Jodyland" when asked about her. He comes across as arrogant and jealous.By including Brown Watley really shows 'cajones' like when she left that organization another reason they have problems with her is my guess also her independence. The others are still on the family payroll. Age does not always bring maturity or greater character development.

@chicsensibilities I've seen it! You're a 100% correct! Why no publicist or industry exec has told them they look & sound like bitter fools in their interviews is basic showbiz 101. Unfortunately, HH needs a reunion because no one is interested in this brotha as a solo act; despite his great vocal abilities!
JW possesses the stamina of Tina Turner in her live shows, while an overweight HH moves like Bob Dylan on oxygen & JD dances like he has very few locks & pops left to get him to 2014!

HH was NOT asked anything Shalamar related on his recent guest appearance on the Monique show which may or may NOT show growth on his end(ego check?) in the court of public opinion! Continued...

One would think, if the Octamom could give birth to 14 kids, these three (Shalamar w/Carolyn Griffey) could deliver a hit after 30years!
