This is an absolutely fantastic review. I am in the process of "Let's Play"ing this game so I stopped as you began to talk about what happens after the cataclysm, but even up to that point you just threw out all the reasons why this is one of the best games ever made. Thanks for taking the time to make this, and I'll be sure to return to this when I have completed the game fully.
@orpheustelos23 though skyrim is probably not in the top 5 rpg games of all time it is still one of the greatest games I've ever played. It is an awesome game though even I would agree that it's probably not better than the rpgs of the past.
I thought it was interesting how in ff2(not ff2, the famicom version) how you go inside a house in mysidia, I think, and press A to read one of the books off the bookshelf, it says that Airships will bring about the fall of magic, which is what happens in ff6.
@NostalgicSince2005 This game would be pretty much perfect if Gau could learn enemy skills anywhere on the world map and if you could control your characters in the coliseum. It would also be nice if there was a way to immediately switch equipment and Espers from one set of party members to another. Beyond that, the game is freaking outstanding.
@1KillaSkrilla1 I have played FFXIII and I have pretty mixed feelings about it. I really like the battle system and the graphics and music are incredible, but I really had a hard time with the characters. There weren't too many that I could relate to or that I even found all that likeable. I also felt the dialog was rather poorly written. I'll get more in depth once I get to my FFXIII review. Thanks for watching!
damn i never got a chance to play FF6 as a kid i costed like 200 bucks or something ridicilous like that... Chrono Trigger is easily my favorite RPG game.bought it for 100$ as a kid, Final Fantasy 7 was epic too..Always wanted to play FF 6 my homie was always talking about it....just got the new joint though (Final Fantasy XIII). Pretty awesome game although ill always love the SNES Graphics more.
Im surprised, being that you included the Sephiroth connection to the Qabalah that you didn't talk about Kefka's connection with the Divine Comedy? Other than that, stellar reviews man! Makes me want to replay every game that youve done so far and finally play through ff3...:)
@johnnyscifi Originally I wanted to keep these videos below 15 minutes. Once I got to FF6, I ended up writing enough to fill a 35 minute review and tried to cut out as much as possible. Originally I had a section in my written review that talked about the inspirations for Kefka, but I felt like the video was too long. Then I got to FF7 and just said screw it, I can't keep it under 20. For my future reviews I'm not going to worry about length. FF3 is awesome! You should play it!
You basically revealed the whole plot in this review. The music puts tears in my eyes. Chilling. I'm a long time rpg fan and Final Fantasy 6 in my oppinion the spellsystem and story is the best seen in any game. Strago was the only main char I could care less about. Great review, and you pointed out the flaws indeed. It would have been fun if you talked a bit about special combat strategies. Like, how to grind the forests around the last castle. How to deal 9999x4. Nothing about Gogo and Umaro?
wow great review, great game, you guys in america are lucky, at the time final fantasy 6 came out, i only had a picture of ff6 in my nintendo-magazin, and i think to myself: i was born in the wrong continent :D
I have to say this is my favorite final fantasy game in the series, although this does have annoying aspects and some things my be overwhelming I have to say this has the best plot out any ff game (to me) and I don't care what any one says ff6's battle mechanics are just genies.
But the final boss makes up for it in it's artwork, pacing, music, etc. Graphics are detailed, expressive, and very unique. Music is excellent. It's still a great game despite and real necessary challenge or depth. But it's the lack of that that makes it boring for me...ok, I'm done. Sorry for my wall of comments, really.
Without restrictions, FF6's gameplay becomes boring and monotonous, a mere excuse just to call it a game. It's like an afterthought, as if the game were ashamed of it. And you already mentioned the Colosseum so...very weak gameplay imo. Everything else is spectacular though. The characters are connected to the main plot through a theme of "restoring what had been lost or broken" hence World of Ruin and sub-plots, and are well developed. Kefka is great but lack of gameplay makes him less threat.
With Tactics not only can you equip one skill in different slots, but you can do so from ANY job, AND the game's enemies level with you to ensure you can't just overpower. Not to mention the stunning A.I. And overpowering is still a somewhat viable strategy because although you can't overpower stats, you can get skills you really shouldn't have at that point. Combined with jobs locked at certain intervals in the plot, it's very deep.
Take Pokemon, FF7, or Tactics for example. Pokemon's strategy primarily revolves around weaknesses but there's enough depth to go through under prepared usually advanced strategies, yet it's fairly limited by only allowing 6 pokemon, only 1 (with exceptions) of each can battle per turn, and four slots for moves. Same with 7's materia system, only a handful slots depending on equipment and most materia will weaken you if you use too many.
beating this game again and even seeing this review, i understand everything thats said... its still one of my least favorite. Still amazing!!! but just not really top.
It doesn't really matter if the game has deep customization when the enemy designs are so terrible. And I don't mean the way they look, but the way they act in battle. All the strategy really boils down because of this is "use powerful spells and heal, they'll eventually die". Each characters "unique" skill becomes gimmicky, enemies require little attention to get past, and magic is all you really need (even then there's no real restrictions). Options with no depth.
@BanditKing094 I agree with you here. Most of the time, it's a matter of selecting the strongest spell or base attack (compounded by the strongest weapon) to dispatch enemies. In FFXIII, the monster design is thought out insofar as the strongest spells or base attacks won't matter until they are staggered.
i love this game....i dunno what else to say but that lol...man when i think about this game, the first thing that pops into my mind is celes suicide scene and how much i felt sorry for her...i don't think any other game has made me feel that way about a character...celes is definitely my favorite female character in any of the final fantasy's
@tonby Celes' attempted suicide scene. In my opinion it's the most beautiful scene in the entire series. Music sends chills down my spine as she jumps.
@IsanWilshireIII Oh yes. For me it was Cyan seeing his family board the Ghost Train. I also like how they handled the relationship between Relm and Shadow. For a 1994 videogame it was rather...subtle.
Glad to see someone with the courage to point out what they felt were flaws with the game. The criticism of the colosseum can be somewhat mitigated by the fact that it intentionally forces you to set up your character going in (i.e. their equipment) in such a way that it limits the possibility of them doing stupid things in the battle, or at least ameliorates the damage. Great review overall. (Incidentally isn't X-Death, who you had issues with, technically quite similar to Kefka in motives?)
@Tengoshi I admit that workarounds do exist for my problems with the colosseum, not complete workarounds but definitely ways to make it significantly less frustrating, but I still don't have the patience for it. Regarding Kefka vs. X-Death, their motives are very similar, however I feel that Kefka has more depth and personality. One thing I didn't have time to mention is that I found it extremely unfortunate that Kefka is missing almost entirely from 2nd half of the game. Thanks for watching!
@IsanWilshireIII No doubt it can be frustrating, I just think it was intentional to make it a true gamble. I agree, Kefka certainly had more personality, I was only pointing out the "destroy everything without purpose" angle wasn't totally original. As for his lack of appearances later on - it's implied that he's no longer even human, just hovering over the world like a god and only interacting with it through "divine" acts of wrath. Given this, I think it was appropriate.
@Tengoshi I agree. It can be a true gamble if you play the game honestly... but the fact is that a reset button exists, and then it isn't a gamble at all... just frustrating. You make a good point about Kefka. I still would have liked to see more of his random destruction and how it was effecting the people of the world. That's nit-picking though, and probably too much to ask for in a 16-bit game with limited memory space.
@IsanWilshireIII If you're using reset, best bet to avoid frustration is to equip the Scimitar (and Offering) which has a chance of randomly dicing the enemy and winning instantly. One of the only guaranteed efficient methods to win when you bet the Ragnarok that I found (maybe the hardest encounter in the game - who needs Ultima anyway?).
