  • that war was basically won after 72 and the failure of hte Easter Offensive. all the US had to do was supply the ARVNs and they'd have evolved like South Korea. But the US didn't need to support them after Nixon went to China and the Chinese aligned themselves with the Americans against soviet expansion in the region. It was still a dirty trick to just abandon millions of vietnamese to slave camps though.

  • So, joeereed, the dictators are...Johnson? Nixon? McNamara? Not that I am fond of Fonda and the others mentioned, but they didn't create Vietnam, did they?

  • Asking cronkite about what he thought of an editorial he read is like asking harrison ford how what he thought of the lines he said playing han solo. totally irrelevant.

  • RIP, Walter Cronkite.

  • My grandpa met Walter while defending the southern part of Hue during the tet offensive

  • @exposetruthwolf hey cretin are yu as ugly as yu are dumb ps god is dead

  • Johnson used the Gulf of Tonkin incident to esculate this war.

Best for people to examine the Gulf of Tonkin incident and to hear what Secretary of State Robert McNamara says about this today! About this false flag attack, McNamara says we made a mistake and that, "It never happened!"

  • @JohnnyFaroe egg zakkely pearl harbor and 911 as well just like the reichstag fire

  • VietNam wasn't even close to Communism. Remember Communism only exists in theory. We've been raised to believe that Democracy is the best and only answer.

  • mannnnnnnnnnnnnn, fuck dis guy! We won like every battle in Vietnam. How'd we lose? cuz he sayz so?

  • @FREAKNIZZLE100 You're fucking stupid.

  • @FREAKNIZZLE100 Your point being? America may have won every conventional battle against the PAVN, but it didn't matter. The Vietnamise had an entirely different mentality about death to the US, to quote Ho Chi Mihn "You will kill 10 of our men, and we will kill 1 of yours, and in the end it will be you who tire of it". Also every conventional battle was on PAVN terms they always chose were it was and when it was.

  • vietnam was a war fought n the same concept as the korean war, it was a mistake by the preseident that cost alot of lives, based on the american idea of themselves, it has happened again and will continue to do so, it is the americans that need to change to stop this, not one man.

  • @1988052420 yeah i completely agree with you, and as Americans we like to play the blame game, so i doubt we will ever change our viewpoints about policing the world.

  • My dad was in the Army. He was a door gunner in Vietnam from December 1969-November 1970. He died of Agent Orange related lung/brain cancer on March 20, 2008. Vietnam was a WASTE!!!

  • Sorry to hear about your Dad. I hope he's in Jahnnah.

  • @10Dec1971

No it wasn't a waste. Every american soldier fighting against comunism all around the globe built a step to our liberty, in Eastern Europe. He fought for our liberties, for our future. Soldiers of my country are fighting right now in Afghanistan against talibans and they fought in Irak too. Some are dying and some people are saying here in Romania that this is a waste. Simply you must go there to fight for the future of humanity. My mother died of cancer two weeks ago. It's hard...

  • @cojocarescu why fight for democracy, what's wrong with communism?

  • It's the New World Order lick spittle

    Walter Benedict Arnold Cronkite!

  • I'm looking for a video clip from Vietnam where a reporter is interviewing a soldier and an explosion is close by. The soldier doesn't even flinch while speaking. I don't know who is interviewing the soldier and I don't remember what they were talking about, I just remember the broken down look on this man's face and how he was desensitized. He didn't stop talking and he didn't flinch. The interviewer dropped down a bit and covered his head. This man just stood there. Incredible.

  • Walter and his leftist advocacy journalism prolonged the war causing the deaths of millions. It marked the beginning of the end for American journalism which is now dead. He has the blood of many people on his hands.

  • Hey, fishinwflies, why dont you tell us what there was to be won in Nam without sounding like the fucking moron that you are by saying it was to stop Communism when you LOST Vietnam and, HEY, communism didn't take over the USA although I'm sure you'll say it did because a half african american man became President while telling us that he's a Marxist, communist, Muslim, terrorist sympathizer who eats arugula with Dijon mustard and was born in Kenya. Go back to watching Fox News dipshit.

  • Cronkite was anything but an un-biased newsman. When he came back from Vietnam and announced the war was a "stalemate" this truly had an affect on the public's opinion of Vietnam.

Not a "fair and balanced" journalist in my eyes.

  • I was in Vietnam during the 1968 Tet Offensive. The Viet Cong was taken to the cleaners and not heard from again except in small squad size engagements.

Read, "A Viet Cong Memoir" by Truong Nhu Tang, the former Minister of Justice. For those that believe that Walter Cronkite was correct and that the War protest movement wasn't controlled by the Communist of Vietnam this book will be an eye opener.

  • What did WE learn from WALTER ?

UH, NO THAT IS DEFINITLY NOT THE WAY IT IS. And brother, you ain't no genius. The difference between current reporters and Walter is that they now have nice legs and faces etc. Good by Walter and good riddence

  • piss off you commie traitor bastard! I hope that someday true Americans will give you your due, and I do not mean the so called americans who put a red in the WH

  • Is author sifting thru these comments, and will mine be deemed worthy to post, or too opinionated? Lets see if author betters the "state run" drive-by consensus media and allows my posts? Yet the unusual thoughtfulness of these posts may show that there is method in his madness; I don't see F bombs & illegible posts here, for SOME reason... G' nite.

  • Because of his anti-sovereignty beliefs, perhaps he's really "the most dangerous man in America" As he said in his own words referring to one-world government, "I'm glad to sit here at the right hand of Satan"

  • joeereed, you're a slithering piece of shit who probably murdered and raped children in vietnam

  • Comment removed

  • Pierre,

God only knows what a fantasy perception you have of the Vietnam War. You still don't get it. It was manufactured by reporters who only wanted the US out of S. Vietnam and leave this worthy ally to the communists. If you ever do start to understand how the media manipulated the news you will be numbed. But I think we are past that peril now. Now we have multiple news sources. The day of Uncle Walter are no more. Plus the public is more aware now.

  • Looking back, we had General Giap, Mark Felt (disgruntled CIA oportunist) Jane Fonda-pseudo Marxist, Tom Hayden (SDS/radical student terrorist) , John Kerry (political hack), Walter Cronkite-the wise, Ed Kennedy, etc, etc.

Dictators may never have it so good again. My god, what a group.

  • You've lived 59 years on this planet and still lack understanding.

That is truly remarkable. The world is not a Hollywood movie. It is not about Good and Evil and Good always triumphing over evil. In the case of the Vietnam war there was no Good and Evil (as there rarely is). It was a gray area and a HUGE mistake for the USA. You may see it differently (by insulting those who also came to this conclusion) but these are not their failings. They're YOUR failings. You lack understanding.

  • This 'gray area' theme has become a bit of a mantra:

    Terrorist holding severed head: Gray

Navy seal rescues mates: also gray

North Korea: Gray area to avoid

    U.S.A.: Gray that pays well

So it's a gray world, and how convenient for the liberal retards. They no longer need to think, there is nothing to discuss.

They are now completely free to lecture the 59 year olds who are plagued by illusions of colour, and remember a world where the good guy may not have always won,, but he did usually try.

  • God, that is well spoken, jy768 ! And this section of comments is so above-youtube average! The current political correctness / moral relativism that OK's Dr. Tiller sucking out 9 mo. old babes' brains and, in his words, "crushing their skulls in a manner similar to a lobster shell" to withdraw thru undilated cervix reminds me of the nutty American / Hindu amalgamation devotions from Sai Baba sent to me by a CA relative. Nobody responsible for nothing, and only error is thinking reality is real

  • jy768, So Well Spoken ! This liberal stuff I believed so strongly until the army math research center fell on van full of fertilizer & killed a fellow U.W. employee of my father was FOR REAL, and in its hyped up ramped up version, gives "Choice" to a Dr. Tiller, who sucks the brains from 9 month old babies and in his own words, crushes their heads "like a lobster shell" to remove baby from undilated cervix...Sex and feeling are God, conviction is suspect, and anyone with a sincere belief a hack

  • Don't you just love the Rush Limbaugh'-type clowns in the world? These idiot do not even realize the reason America lost the war in Viet Nam: The Chinese. I think Dr. Tiller sucked the brains out of these individuals.

  • Comment removed

  • Lets say you were in Nam, it explains your hostility towards anyone who criticized that war. Growing up you were suckered in believing how glorious war was by your cowardly relatives who probably spent all of WW2 cleaning shitters on Army bases. You saw how in movies and TV, the veterans of WW2 were revered as heroes for fighting back the Japanese and Nazis. But it's always burned your ass that you never got the heroes welcome that you craved which is why you shit on Walter Cronkite.

  • Your son? You sure about that because I doubt a limp dick like you could get it up unless it was for a 12 year old Vietnamese boy. I think you got suckered into supporting the kid fathered by whatever homeless person your whore was nailing behind your back. I bet shed stick her tongue in his filthy asshole before coming home and giving you a nice big kiss. You must have money because no woman would spread their legs for your shriveled, one inch fuckstick unless they were getting paid.

  • @jy768 lol if anything its the conservatives who started the who "RealPolitik" mantra of relative power, rather than right and wrong. That was under Nixon

  • @jy768 soz for the comment revival but so you seriously remember a time when the world was not gray?

  • @joeereed HEY ASHHOLE what redneck cretin infested hillbilly hole u inhabit

  • Years from now, history will judge Cronkite by the facts. He was simply an incompetent news reporter.

  • The US media was incompetent in televising the Vietnam War. They did not know what they were doing. Walter had two full years of college completed. Imagine. Two full years. I hope he doesn't run into General Abrams !! IYKWIM

  • hey heartsofspace, you want 8 more years of that tard Bush - you fking moron - Bush is the reason this country is in the shape that its in.

  • God bless him!

  • It's true, what Walter said just before he died of polio: Barack Obama is an arrogant, two-faced, power-mad, tax-and-spend, socialist son of a bitch...Rush Limbaugh for President!

  • Liar.

  • There will always be controversy over Walter Cronkite's views of the Tet Offensive.

  • you're glad someone is dead? Do you consider yourself a Christian or what?

  • Congratulations on making yourself appear the feckless little turd you must be.

  • Cronkite got us OUT of the illegal, unjustified Vietnam War. There are kids alive today because their dads and granddads were brought HOME from Vietnam instead of dying in a god-forsaken, steaming jungle. Too bad we didn''t have a Cronkite today to question the Iraq debacle - the Vietnam of the 21st century - before 4,600 brave US troops died there for no reason whatsoever other than to settle Bush's personal vendetta with Saddam. Our troops are not PAWNS to be used like toy soldiers.

  • i wish he did get us out the war. The war was to go on for another5 years and 30 k americans dead after he made his famous editorial.

  • what in hell is wrong with you people? Liberal piece of shit? Burn in hell? Nice compassion and respect for others' point of views. This man saw the truth of the situation, which was that the military top brass fabricated whatever numbers were convenient to them to continue feeding the war machine. HE has blood on his hands? What about the people that prolonged this ridiculous, wrongheaded, and damaging war for years, despite the clear knowledge that we were in the wrong, and losing?

  • Walter Cronkite was a recipient of the Norman Cousin's award for world governance. He did not believe in the sovereignty of the United States. He advocated planetary government.

  • True. He was tired of war. He wanted global democratic government. Not global tyrannical government.

  • We decimated the VC during TET and had them on the ropes till Walter got on the air and stabbed America in the back.

  • No, his lies helped prolong it.

  • Comment removed

  • Many American GI's are still alive and healthy because Cronkite and other major figures took a stand against that war.

Any former GI who has some deluded idea that supporting troops means to keep them in danger is not supportive of the troops but is endangering them.

Cronkite loved this country like few others.

He was not driven by phlegmatic outbursts of emotional hysteria. He was considered the most trusted man in America. You have to prove somethng to lot of people, and he did.

  • This POS did incalculable damage to the U.S. He shouldn't even be remembered.

  • where do you get your facts? "incalculable damage???"

  • This POS has the blood of over 40,000 Brave Americans on his hands. I pray that he has to face each and every one of my brothers that he helped kill on his way to hell.

  • Yep, Walter Cronkite's lies got us into Vietnam, amirite

  • i really hope this liberal piece of shit died a horrible death. i hope he's burning in hell right now next to hitler. you fucken liberal traitor. burn in hell you piece of shit. you betrayed american soldiers in vietnam. burn in hell...burn in hell... burn in hell... i hope your family reads this and understands what a liberal piece of shit you are. rest in piss you piece of shit

  • I doubt that you were a Marine and if you were then how did it feel murdering women and children you gutless pansy. Despite your tough guy act and the worlds biggest military machine backing you up, you still got your asses kicked by a bunch of peasants. Never mind that a fucking lowlife baby killer like you couldn't even tell me what there was to win in Nam. There never was anything to be won except for defense contractors who got rich and dickless asswipes like you got fed into a meat grinder

  • Hey CTM1978, you want to see a real dickless asswipe, go say that to a marines face then look in the mirror at the emergency room.

  • Go fuck yourself you cockslurping brain damaged abortion survivor. To bad that whore mother of yours that shit you out of her asshole didn't shove that coathanger hard enough into your head to kill you rather then spew you from her STD riddled filthy toilet of a cunt. Tell us again how much of a hero John McCain was for dropping bombs on villages before crashing his plain like the retard he is before getting assfucked by the Vietcong for 5 years when he wasn't chugging their semen. Pussyface.

  • Well there is an intelligent commentary. Pretty brave when you say stuff like that from the safety of your mental institution. Hey everyone, look what the left has devolved into!

  • Typical conservative pussy who rolls on his back and starts crying when they find someone they can't bully or shout down into silence. Hey, you love war so much, join the army and get your ass shot off in Iraq since you don't have any balls to get blown off. Of course, depending on your age, you'll probably lie and say that you were in Nam when the truth is that either you got out of combat like GWB or pussied out like Limbaugh and Cheney. What was there to be won in Nam you fuckstick?

  • What was to be won in Viet Nam was to save the lives of the 1.6 million people who died in communist re-education camps after cowards such as your self pulled funding for the war. A war your Kennedy got us into. I am a veteran clearly unlike you.

  • As opposed to the estimated 1 to 2 million deaths the war actually caused? Typical conservative moron logic of we have to burn down the orphanage to save the children even though all the kids are inside the building. Youre a pathological liar and sociopathic piece of shit that will say or do anything to justify youre demented beliefs and actions. Kennedy wanted to end the war and all that got him was a bullet in the head from someone like you.

  • Comment removed

  • Do you have funeral arrangements Private Pussy? They dont bury cowards like you in Arlington so I hope that you managed to drop dead into the nearest ditch because your family sure as fuck couldnt care enough to kick some dirt over a worthless piece of shit like you. Hey, you hate socialism right? I guess that means youve never received a penny of taxpayer money in medical treatment, eh? I mean, apart from stitching up your bleeding anus after the members of your unit made you their bitch.

  • Oh and another thing, you say that its all Kennedys fault for the war but on the other hand you argue that the war never should have ended and was a just cause, so which is it you inconsistent conservative scum? You just argued that the war was justified because of your communist bullshit so I thought youd love Kennedy for the war because delusion crackers like you still buy into that propaganda that Vietnam was a war against communism. Youre a pathetic, simple minded moron like GWB.

  • I feel sorry for you. You are delusional and quite disturbed. Seek help.

  • Typical Republican projection, accuse others of being what you are. You're a fucking dirtbag who likes acting tough but, like all conservatives, you're a pathetic, spineless, cowardly worm disguised as a man. If you're married or have children, understand that they only put up with you in the hopes of inheriting everything you own and selling it once you are finally dead and no longer polluting the world with your presence. My only worry is that there isn't a Hell for you to burn in.

  • Comment removed

  • WW2 was a just war, Vietnam was a bullshit war designed to put American taxpayer money into the hands of defense contractors, just like Iraq. Where are those WMDs eh?. Also, you weren't in Nam. Liars like you say that because you think it somehow backs up your demented, jingoistic war mongering and even if you were I don't give a shit. Know why? It's because of your complete moral failing in refusing to fight in not a war but a slaughter of almost 2 million Vietnamese who still kicked you ass.

  • Comment removed

  • You are a liar because you could have easily pulled fake info from any number of websites to back up your bullshit claim to have been a Nam vet. I wouldnt put it past you because conservative authoritarian scum like you have this little trick of hiding behind the troops and you think that claiming to have been in Nam will shut down discussion in the same way that the Bush Administration claimed that if you criticized them then you were not supporting the troops. You are a sociopathic liar.

  • Also, didnt it bother you, at all, voting for GWB when that cowardly little worm got out of Nam because of Daddys connections when chumps like you were shoved feet first into the meat grinder? How about voting for that fucking moron McCain when he was nothing more then an incompetent pilot who got by on his famous family name throughout his whole life. What suckers people like you are.

  • Furthermore, there are two types of Conservatives, both of which love war, but the ones at the top (Bush, Cheney, Rove, Limbaugh, OReilly and Rumsfeld) are cowards that refuse to fight in one but dont give a second thought to sending members of other peoples families to their deaths. They wrap themselves in the flag and hide behind the troops like the fucking cockroaches that they are. Then there are the brain drones who line up for the slaughter. So which one are you fuckface?

  • Oh and "intelligent commentary" is wasted on a know nothing right wing scumbag like you for whom reality and facts are optional. So suck the shit out of my ass since you are what you eat and I'll know you'll ask for seconds because, being a drooling Wingnut retarded fucktstick, you no doubt like being treated like a mushroom by being fed shit and kept in the darkness of your own ignorance. I'll be back later if you enjoy being bitch sapped and want some more. Wanker.

  • spoken like a true vulgarian. Just out of curiosity, do you kiss your mother with that mouth? I hope nobody has your comments removed. They say far more about you than me. What a sad little person you must be.

  • Why I find vulgar is that sociopathic scum like you cheer on war, death and destruction and that's because people like you are the type of hypocritical monsters who go around telling people how moral you are while reveling in the murder of human beings because they dont look like you, think like you or speak the same language. Theres no point arguing with you as you are a delusional asswipe for whom facts and reality are optional while having a black pit of emptiness where your soul should be.

  • Clearly, Walter, you pissed off a bunch of assholes. I know of no better tribute. May the same be said of me when I am gone!

  • A man who spoke his mind. A man who gained the respect of many by voicing their concerns over US. geopolitics.

"And that's the way it is."

  • I quite agree!

  • well said

  • A brilliant man, an honest man and above all, a gentleman. To the idiots who commented below, check his biography before you spew your false and poorly-spelled invective.

  • My, aren't you the cute little intellectual! A turd is dead today, yipee.

  • Walter Kronkite was a communist simpathizer during the Vietnman War, and made us loose the war! I hope he is burning in Hell for all eternity. The only thing Baby Jesus hates more than liberals is liberal jurnalists!

  • Wanda,

If you are going to Moby-Troll (pretending to be a conservative - while saying stupid things in an effort to discredit legitimate conservatives) you will need to work on your vocabulary, as you talk like a leftist PRETENDING to be a conservative.

I will give partial credit (but not enough to pass this class) for the intentional misspelling of the word "journalists" in an effort to make your intellectual opposition look ignorant and uneducated

    Final Grade: F+

    Course credits earned: 0

  • May you be in god's loving hands now.

  • God bless you Mr. Cronkite!!

  • I hope that some day Cronkite and Arnold are both remembered for what they were.

    Traitors!

  • Does anyone have the clip or access to the clip when Cronkite is handed "this just in" and accidetly says "What the hell is going on over there" when he realized that the U.S is not going to win the war??

  • R.I.P.

    Walter Cronkite

    1916-2009

  • It's reported only yesterday (19th June 2009) that Walter Cronkite was gravely ill. He's 92.

  • nice prophecie!!!

  • how did the tet offensive influence nationalism movement in vietnam at that time???

  • walter cant stand how the evening news has become such a joke, with all the cable 24/7 news, the evening news is just spewing history by the time it comes on.

  • The only way the war could have been 'won' would have been to send a corps-sized force into Laos to cut the Ho Chi Minh trail and keep them there. Which is just what Eisenhower concluded after his own private, personal study of the military problems in Indo-China in 1960. He told this to both Kenneddy and Johnson and was ignored.

  • wow! I feel sorry for you Travis. To win a war, can we get more stupid than that?

  • Yes we can. Stupidity would be to not fight a war to gain freedom or to defend ourselves.

  • Defend ourselves against who? The Vietnamese? Were they on their way over here?

  • Don't misinterpret what I wrote. If people ask for help in defending freedom we should give it to them.

  • The only way the war could have been won would be to drop an A-Bomb on Vietnam.

  • I doubt it. We were fighting a people who were still in the agricultural age. How can atomic bombs stop people who rushed arms on bicycles? What we should have done is support Ho Chi Minh in his attempt to throw off French colonialism and to keep him independent of Russian and Chinese Communists, like Marshall Tito in Yugoslavia.

Ultimately, we won the war, for Vietnam has gone capitalist. Vitenamese hate the Chinese, a lesson that Lyndon Johnson never learned!

  • Werd. You're right.

I dont know why you got 7 thumbs down.

The Commies didnt have shit left after that offensive. They couldnt raid all of our positions.

  • Traitor to the cause of what? World domination by the U.S.??? Vietnam should have been left to them not us! They fought the French for independence remember or that doesn't matter. It's for us to tell them how to run their own country I guess...

  • Hook'em,Walter!!

  • This debate's over. Read "Following Ho Chi Minh: Memoirs of a North Vietnamese Colonel" (avail. @ Amazon). Every day our leadership would listen to world news over the radio at 9AM to follow the growth of the antiwar movement. Visits to Hanoi by (civilian Americans) gave us confidence that we should hold on in the face of battlefield reverses," and "Our (1968) Tet loses were staggering and a complete surprise. (Gen.) Giap later told me that Tet had been a military defeat ...."

  • The Tet Offensive initial attacks stunned allied forces and took them by surprise, but most were quickly contained and beaten back, inflicting massive casualties on the NLF. The exceptions were the fighting that erupted in the old imperial capital of Huế, where intense fighting lasted for a month, and the continuing struggle around the U.S. combat base at Khe Sanh, where fighting continued for two more months. the offensive was a military disaster for communist forces.

  • History proved him right though, didn't it? He went over there and brought back the TRUTH. So this all goes back to the old saying "the truth hurts". You all are so dogmatic, how you follow the government and what they tell you so blindly. I don't support the war but I support the TROOPS.

  • Look at Iraq for example.

Ted Koppel and his network evenning news pals never came out openly and said "Let's go!", but he did so by mostly interviewing pro-war guests, by taking the White House at its words for its goals, and by never addressing the larger querstion of whether America even has the right to invade another country like it owns thr world.

  • Also, there is no such thing as a competely fair news media.

If he had stayed quiet, Cromkite would still be editorializing-by-silence, in favor of the war.

News organizatyions editorialize all the time, not with words, but by the type of stories they cover, guests interviewed, and questions asked...

  • The funny thinig is that I'm sure mos tof those right-wingers who attack Cronkite for editorializing, probaly religiously watch Bill O'Reilly, who does nothing but editirialize!

  • Yep.
