None the less, this particular history is extremely well documented and well known by just about all american historians to be in accordance with his narrative here. In addition, him being in possession of thousands of actual historical documents, all of which are authenticated by our top national history museums, testifies to his credibility. You may not like him or agree with his perspective, but that does'nt disqualify him.

@WrknClssHero What disqualifies him is the fact that he does not produce scholarship and he does not aim to. His aim is to influence public policy. He can have all the documents he wants, but that doesn't make him a historian. It makes him a history buff with an axe to grind.

Britain didn't start the war. The USA had invaded Upper Canada & burned the Parliament building in York. Washington was retaliation.

Ironicly Francis Key Howard grandson of the poems author was imprisoned in Fort Mchenry for 16 months for writing an editorial critical of President Lincoln.

@Eddythebeast666 I don't know if the above statement is true but Britain had been going against treaties with the United States for years. They were holding forts inside American Borders and had been taking American Merchants as prisoners of war despite their innocence. Since these were only a few of the many injustices from Britain, even if America had started the war: we were entirely justified in doing so.

@Vveind The forts were in response to the US failure to protect & compensate Loyalists as agreed to in the Treaty of Paris as was support of Natives defending against US expansion.

Both issues had been resolved with the Jay treaty 1794. Britain desperately needed the troops for the Napoleonic war & the forts had been abandoned. If the Forts had still been manned the US would not have been able to attack Canada with out dealing with them first.

The quest for justice wasn't the US motive.

The States most affected by Impressment were the northeast Federalist States who because Britain was a huge Trading partner voted against the war & were so strongly against the war formed the Hartford Convention to Leave the US & form an independent peace with Britain. The War Hawks were from Southwest states. Bitter about the British anti slave trade act of 1807 & sympathetic to Napoleon.Madison used Impressment to undercut the Feds

@Vveind By 1812 the Jay treaty had expired & Madison had rejected the treaty meant to replace it. The real conflicts that led to the war were fought in the US congress by Representatives of States whose economies dictated their policies.

It saddens me to see the negative comments on here about the trials and struggles and battles that our founding Fathers went through to gain our freedoms. You are as ignorant as stupid and do not belong here.

This and all other battles were not the single reason that we gained our freedoms, but was influential, and gained a demoralizing factor over the British. I am proud of our founding Fathers and wish the Americans today were half as courageous as the folks then.

Realizing the potential for disaster, Armistead had the fort's gunpowder supply distributed to safer locations. As the sun began to rise, he ordered the fort's small storm flag lowered and replaced with the standard garrison flag measuring 42 feet by 30 feet. Sewn by local seamstress Mary Pickersgill, the flag was clearly visible to all of the ships in the river.

Really curious what research was done to determine that piles of bodies were removed and replaced with live ones to hold up the flag

Worst account of reasons for war of 1812 ever heard. The public buildings in Washington were burnt in retaliation for public & private property burnt by the States in British Canada!! America lost the war of 1812 because you failed to take Canada. All other issues were ultimately irrelevant. I'm not anti American, but I do like the 'plain truth'

No, this is where England failed to keep it's bargain at the end of the American Revolutionary war and began impressing American sailors into it's navy. As a result America declared war (a very small nation compared to the world's #1 military power back then) and thus ensued the war of 1812. Yes, America invaded Canada and burned down buildings in Toronto, and the British returned the favor 2 years later. Neither side won the war, it just proved the American Rev war wasn't a fluke.

I just got back from Fort McHenry. When you go in, they show a short video much like this one about the war, the Battle of Baltimore and the penning of the poem by Francis Scott Key. The video ends with the Star Spangled Banner being slowly sung. A curtain automatically opens and you see the actual fort with a replica of the 15 star flag still flying over it.

It is an unbelievable and awe inspiring sight to see the15 star flag still flying over Fort McHenry after watching the video.
