@killer231233 Are you related to Francis Key Howard grandson of Francis Scott Key?
Arrested for writing a critical editorial in his newspaper of Lincoln's suspension of the writ of habeas corpus & imprisoned for 14 months in Fort McHenry.
Thomas "Tom" Paine (February 9, 1737 [O.S. January 29, 1736[1]] -- June 8, 1809) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He became notorious because of The Age of Reason (1793--94), his book that advocates deism, promotes reason and freethinking, argues against institutionalized religion and Christian doctrines.
@TheLoveschach Respectfully, even historians find dissagreement. None the less, this particular history is extremely well documented and well known by just about all american historians to be in accordance with his narrative here. In addition, him being in possession of thousands of actual historical documents, all of which are authenticated by our top national history museums, testifies to his credibility. You may not like him or agree with his perspective, but that does'nt disqualify him.
@WrknClssHero What disqualifies him is the fact that he does not produce scholarship and he does not aim to. His aim is to influence public policy. He can have all the documents he wants, but that doesn't make him a historian. It makes him a history buff with an axe to grind.
@TheLoveschach Respectfully, you speak more like someone with an axe to grind than Mr. Barton. I think we'll just have to agree to dissagree on this. Thanks.
@TheLoveschach I dont believe he has in any way. I think he is on point & I believe history supports it. Thats why we'll just dissagree. If you have a different story about the star spangled banner & Fort McHenry then I might entertain hearing it.
Britain didn't start the war. The USA had invaded Upper Canada & burned the Parliament building in York. Washington was retaliation.
Ironicly Francis Key Howard grandson of the poems author was imprisoned in Fort Mchenry for 16 months for writing an editorial critical of President Lincoln.
@Eddythebeast666 I don't know if the above statement is true but Britain had been going against treaties with the United States for years. They were holding forts inside American Borders and had been taking American Merchants as prisoners of war despite their innocence. Since these were only a few of the many injustices from Britain, even if America had started the war: we were entirely justified in doing so.
@Vveind The forts were in response to the US failure to protect & compensate Loyalists as agreed to in the Treaty of Paris as was support of Natives defending against US expansion.
Both issues had been resolved with the Jay treaty 1794. Britain desperately needed the troops for the Napoleonic war & the forts had been abandoned. If the Forts had still been manned the US would not have been able to attack Canada with out dealing with them first.
@Vveind The Impressment of seamen was an excuse not a motive. The States most affected by Impressment were the northeast Federalist States who because Britain was a huge Trading partner voted against the war & were so strongly against the war formed the Hartford Convention to Leave the US & form an independent peace with Britain. The War Hawks were from Southwest states. Bitter about the British anti slave trade act of 1807 & sympathetic to Napoleon.Madison used Impressment to undercut the Feds
@Vveind By 1812 the Jay treaty had expired & Madison had rejected the treaty meant to replace it. The real conflicts that led to the war were fought in the US congress by Representatives of States whose economies dictated their policies.
Thank you David, and Wallbuilders for all you do. I have purchased several books in order to learn the truth of American history, Stay strong, keep your powder dry and your head low.
It saddens me to see the negative comments on here about the trials and struggles and battles that our founding Fathers went through to gain our freedoms. You are as ignorant as stupid and do not belong here.
This and all other battles were not the single reason that we gained our freedoms, but was influential, and gained a demoralizing factor over the British. I am proud of our founding Fathers and wish the Americans today were half as courageous as the folks then.
Realizing the potential for disaster, Armistead had the fort's gunpowder supply distributed to safer locations. As the sun began to rise, he ordered the fort's small storm flag lowered and replaced with the standard garrison flag measuring 42 feet by 30 feet. Sewn by local seamstress Mary Pickersgill, the flag was clearly visible to all of the ships in the river.
Really curious what research was done to determine that piles of bodies were removed and replaced with live ones to hold up the flag
alywilliams ~ Please! Tell me that you are not that obtuse & ignorant! I didn't state my own concept of freedom because it isn't relevant on this issue. Freedom for most of us is "Life liberty & the pursuit of happiness". To feel safe in our own homes. The ability to live our lives free from tyranny; ruled by the dictates of our own consience. Now please go start a fight with someone else ~ you bore me.
I homeschool my grandkids and would love to use this video to introduce the singing of the Star Spangled Banner at their school program. Does anyone know how to get this on DVD?
I homeschool my grandkids, and would love to use this video to introduce the Star Spangled Banner at their school program. However, I cannot figure out how to get it on DVD..help!
alot of people forget that this song was written at a time when americans were fighting for theyr freedom against tyranny....now, when i see the flag of america, i think of tyranny....our government and the people that support it, have destroyed america...this is no longer a land of the free, it is the land of oppressive government and dictatorship...a land where the government is the master, and the people are subjects of the master...the opposite of the america over 200 years ago
The song dates from the mid-1770s and it was composed for a group of London gentlemen who had recently formed a social club. John Stafford Smith wrote the music , it's an old English drinking song.
David Barton is so important to the American resurection. Before it is all said and done, Mr. Barton will go down in history as one of the key players in the second American Revolution. He is indeed a true American Patriot.
Worst account of reasons for war of 1812 ever heard. The public buildings in Washington were burnt in retaliation for public & private property burnt by the States in British Canada!! America lost the war of 1812 because you failed to take Canada. All other issues were ultimately irrelevant. I'm not anti American, but I do like the 'plain truth'
@stoffer1981 What video did you watch?! He said it was for promises made but not kept. The War of 1812 was about trade problems. He said by 1814 that they burnt the buildings, didn't he? I quote: "By August of 1814, the British had entered Washington DC, routed the American troops...and then they burned down the government buildings."
@MrApenman I think you'll find that Stoffer1981 was commenting on the lack of mention as to WHY the British decided to burn public buildings in the American capital in 1814..........that this was in retaliation to the previous burning of a Canadian city by American troops in April 1813........the film should have mentioned such to explain the actions of the British. By the way, the Americans destroyed private and public buildings in Canada. Hope this helps.
I love tis story, this is where America invades Canada, and as a response the British(Canadians) fought back and burned down the white house!! Don't forget that America!!
u weren't even canada then. also the british are the ones who burned the white house. the troops were from the napoleon war, and were deployed to america.
so stfu.
also america was weak then. that's like saying as if you attacked a small country like lithuania in mordern times and gloated about it.
Canada wasn't the ones who burnt the white house. it was british troops who just finished with the napoleanic wars, and were sent to chesepeke bay where they burnt the capital.
No, this is where England failed to keep it's bargain at the end of the American Revolutionary war and began impressing American sailors into it's navy. As a result America declared war (a very small nation compared to the world's #1 military power back then) and thus ensued the war of 1812. Yes, America invaded Canada and burned down buildings in Toronto, and the British returned the favor 2 years later. Neither side won the war, it just proved the American Rev war wasn't a fluke.
@TxTechRox123 The States also failed to keep the treaty of peace after the American Revolution and grant the Loyalist Americans their rights under the agreed terms........ So there!!! Also, where are your French allies now? It's British Commonwealth troops that are your only true allies! The sooner the States return to the Mothercountry the better off you'll be.
@TxTechRox123 You can, but your country can't. The ex-British founding fathers advocated your view on foreign alliances, it was already dated by 1865. The aborted colonies need to realise the world is consolidating and you havn't that many friends.
@zunathanzu but dont forget this, as the British (canadians) were trying to burn down the white house, trying but coudent becase it was made out of marble and only managed to scorch it. the americans were burning down canadas capatale building.
You had maybe 2 guys from Canada in a battalion of seasoned British troops fresh from the Napoleonic Wars. Hardly a claim for Canadian supremacy. Look, we enjoy your oil, timber, and whiskey, some of us even like your women eh? So don't push it, enjoy the rewards while you can, and please check YOUR facts when replying to OUR history. Regards...
I just got back from Fort McHenry. When you go in, they show a short video much like this one about the war, the Battle of Baltimore and the penning of the poem by Francis Scott Key. The video ends with the Star Spangled Banner being slowly sung. A curtain automatically opens and you see the actual fort with a replica of the 15 star flag still flying over it.
It is an unbelievable and awe inspiring sight to see the15 star flag still flying over Fort McHenry after watching the video.
Thank you sooooo much! This is a story that just is not told enough.I saw combat in VietNam and saw the rockets red glare and the bombs bursting in air! It is very personal to me.
Thank you for this beautiful lesson about our flag. We need more patriotism in this country. Some of our fellow Americans have forgotten what the cost of freedom really is.
@manacarol123 are you fat? and from the south? patriotism these days means only segregation and xenophobia. we're all part of the human race, that's the way to look at humanity, not by borders of countries.
@alywilliams1985 > I'm Skinny, & from the North. My best friend is black as coal. I've traveled all over this world & am a Jewish American patriot! Clearly you are an idiot!
@yochanah1 Just because each person may define 'Freedom' differently ~ Does NOT change what it is.. AND ~ If it is NOT personal to anyone ,, Then it is NOT an issue to anyone ~ And No one will have it..
@geek5651 ~ Clearly you have no clue what freedom is. It is very personal, & mine to define for myself. I simply didn't feel obligated to share what is my business alone. But I assure you, I have freedom in abundance. Truly I am blessed with wealth, freedom, & joy beyond measure. Spirit soul & body I am a wealthy woman.
@yochanah1 ~ I don't know where you are from ,,, But i do believe; what you think you have; is a false feeling.. Sharing it (your freedom "or" feeling of) should be a "Joy" ; Not an obligation.. And being wealthy does NOT make a person free.. When your money runs out ,, Then YOU will find out.. Till then ,, I will pray for you..
@geek5651 You believe??? You have all of the answers with no knowledge of the questions. You do not know me, or the price I've paid for my love of God & this life He has given me. My freedom Is pure joy, freedom of spirit & soul! It has nothing to do with material wealth, though I have enough.
@yochanah1 ~ You are right ,, I don't know you , Nor the price you have paid.. I apologize to you; if you took it that way.. My intent was to convey the ‘Value’ of Freedom and to also stand ready to explain it; as well as defend it.. As you said ,, Your definition may differ from mine ,, BUT,, The feeling will always be the same.. "It is a Equal Belonging in what is Just and Right.." I meant NO offence to you..
Spirit soul & body I am a free & wealthy woman.
@alywilliams1985 "we're all part of the human race, that's the way to look at humanity, not by borders of countries" hahahaha that's all well and good, now go try and tell that to the Russians, or better yet, the Chinese. The only people who share in that sentimental rubbish are foolhardy westerners who've seen too many hollywood movies and have been brainwashed by they're own shitty public school systems.
anybody else get chills whenever they hear the star spangled banner

alywilliams1985 1 year ago
@alywilliams1985 Each individual defines freedom for themselves, so my personal revelation of freedom is not the issue.

@yochanah1 in other words, you haven't a clue. freedom is an abstract. americans just love to use that word to start wars and own guns.

@alywilliams1985 How did I know you were from the UK? Freedom, the escaping of British rule. That was a start of freedom.
