  • I am happy that you do not criticize season 0 from the yu-gi-oh! series since that has completely nothing to do with the duel monsters series. Inform me when I am wrong.

  • 10) its made for adults

    9) i dissagree there is alot of story behind it and great charicters

    8) agreed

    7) never scene it

    6) debatable considering all the fillers

  • 10-) Agreed

    9-) Never seen it

8-) I still buy the video games, sadly

7-) Take care when talking about a classic

6-) I hated it on the very first 20 seconds i watched of it (I'm not kidding, this thing put me to sleep from boredom)

  • All anime are overrated.

  • BTW bro I wasn't busting your balls. Many of the anime on your channel is anime I enjoy.I also watched Secret of NIMH in the theater I was 11 years old, great movie.I wasn't lying about the roadracing sportbikes inspired by Akira. If you like check out my Kaneda at Deals Gap video. You might be pleasantly surprised.

  • Bro! You're 26,so you were 2 years old when the anime Akira was released. The fact is Akira is,and will forever be immortalized.I was born in 1971,witnessed the birth of anime. There wasn't even the word anime back in the day.It was called japanimation.I just would like to say it's bad etiquette to argue, disrespect,or put down any of this great form of entertainment.Dubs,subs,popular,unpopular.Otaku,Weeaboo.Bottom line,we should all be humble fans like me.I roadrace sportbikes because of Akira.

  • Doesn't matter if you've been a fan of anime for 10 years. You called Akira overrated and that pretty much shows how much you really know about Anime. Its not like we are talking Naruto or Bleach here. If it wasn't for Akira, anime wouldn't even be as popular as it is today in the US. It was Akira that introduced Anime to the world, and Ghost in the Shell that revolutionized it. So Akira deserves all the recognition it gets.

  • I agree with popular shows like Naruto being overrated but I don't agree with Clannad being overrated. It just seem like you couldn't watch it seriously because of your mindset, that makes this video useless. Of course you can post whatever you like, but if you already know that it's nonsense why bother putting it on YouTube?

  • I actually agree. Akira is a little overrated, it's a good movie, but the manga is WAY better.

  • Saying you don't like a title is understandable, but to rail out Clannad, one of the finest commentaries on life in general and easily one of the greatest animated masterpieces of our time, by saying it's overrated is just wrong. And then to go as far as backing it up with shallow reasons is borderline sacrilege. Sure there's moe, but saying the drama is forced and that there's no character development is shallow scepticism. The whole show revolves around Okazaki's transition through adulthood.

  • Your know...I never even realized Elfen Lied had Fanservice...

  • Akira is way waaaaaaaaay overrated. Amazing manga. Not a good anime.

  • Clannad is awesome ,you have no idea what you are taking

  • that '2000+page to 2 hours' argument is really old, and just proves you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. when akira went into production it wasn't even halfway through the series so as a result, its more of an adaptation of the first two volumes. no animefan ever gave a fuck about mainstream opinion back during the vhs era, akira/overfiend generated more fans than haters.

  • Geez you're talking about Akira like it's Ninja Scroll in terms of violence and sex, there's that one nude scene where the girl gets her shirt ripped off and the violent scenes aren't even that extreme (not even the mutation scene at the end) .

  • You fucking nerd. Youre and idiot

  • What a stupid newbie. Akira is an all time classic with some of the most beautifully hand drawn animation in anime's existence. You clearly have no business judging anime cuz you're fucking stupid.

  • @mx3sid1: Newbie? I've been a fan of anime for almost ten years now and have seen enough anime where I can judge what could be the best or getting more popularity than necessary because of fans not getting enough exposure to other anime titles. And of course, I'm free to say whatever I please considering we live in a country with freedom of speech so I can judge as I please and saying that I'm "fucking stupid" won't stop me from saying what I want.

  • @ggn3 Akira was an amazing movie. Just because it has violence in it doesn't mean people will assume all anime is like that, besides, people didn't HAVE any precognitions of anime at the time. Series aren't meant to live up to a standard a group of aspies try to give it.

  • @ggn3 If you just said that you liked a certain show or film, it would be different, but by making a Top 10 Overrated Anime list, it shows you're trying to pass your opinion of something you obviously don't like as inferior, or at least, not worth the praise it gets. And you're being a hypocrite, obviously the credit these titles got was based on the opinions of others, so in this case, you're saying someone else is wrong, what you're trying to to tell mx3sid1 to stop doing.

    Way to fail.

  • @ggn3 I agree with free to say what you want and ill respect that. But really no one can judge what animes could be good or overrated mostly because it depends on ones personal opinion.

  • @mx3sid1 Akira has definitely been surpassed, what makes Akira great is it was the originator of high quality anime and became the blueprint for an entire industry. Akira is like the Beatles, it was innovative, and still is pretty good, but it's been done a lot better a lot of times since.

  • I have been watching anime for nearly 35 years and I found Akira to be wayyyyyyyyy overrated. I was pumped up beforfe I was it for the first time, but I got bored half way through I thought the visual art was good, but I did not care about the story. Fancy that! Judging a movie on its story (which I noticed you never mentioned)

  • This list is #1 on my top ten list of most overrated top ten lists.

  • Screw you! Clannad is amazing! It's not overated its underrated! If you want overated go watch Naruto or Pokemon. ( The New Generation not the old.)

  • @yotsubafanfan Pokémon is for kids. Of course it's overrated. LOL Hello Kitty

  • After seeing how long the dislike bar was, I expected this video to be crap, but then he put Elfin Lied on the list. So overrated.

  • If you want a melocdramatic anime... play any Final Fantasy game... especially 13.

  • I loved Akira but yes I do agree that there are anime titles that are way overrated and aren't very good but for some reason get a huge fan following. I love anime but I still have enough of a brain to see that there is a lot of crappy anime titles as well.

Also that Kaneda, Tetsuo, Kaneda, Tetsuo at the end of the Akira synopsis of why you find it overrated was funny.

  • Fuckin' hate Clannad. Should've been #1.

Duel Monsters was fine, though I never really forgive NAS for replacing Ogata Megumi with some stage actor with zero voive acting experience.

  • I must say you have got balls to dis this many anime that so many people love..... you my friend are brave.....

  • I only agree about Elfen Lied (it just fool of cheap dramatic tromps) and Clannad (the anime with such horrible art don't deserve any attention)

For the rest - classic can't be overrated, goddamnit!

  • Yu-Gi-Oh! was made before the card game was...

  • @EdtheBlueNinjaYoshi4: My comments have to do with the Duel Monsters anime.

  • Dan Green: "Then you have failed."

  • Comment removed

  • I agree with all you had said. I still like those shows, but you are right.

  • Clannad, I fail to see how the drama is "forced", as you put it or how they are any cuter than other anime characters. And you didn't even finish it? How can you rate it then?

Yu-gi-oh, good call, I would have had it higher on the list thought.

Akira, thats alittle questionable, don't know if I'd put it on there, but it could be.

SM, defintely should be on here, couldn't stand that shit.

Also, you mispronounced alot of word and you might wana get a better mic.

  • Okay Elfen Lied, come on dude, I know the ending is unclear, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. And I'll give you that some of the scenes were over the top, like the puppy/vase scene in the classroom and the cleaning scene where Kouta felt up Lucy. But it shouldn't be on the list, it was amazingly written, very creative and doesn't show more fan service than the next anime. =/

  • i'm pretty sure everyone except kids hated Yu Gi Oh.

  • Akira wasn't that great. Manga is a different story though.

  • Yu gi oh and Clanad => you are rigth

Akira => Really you dont enjoy it? D=

  • I screamed bloody murder when you said Akira.

  • THANK YOU! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hated Clannad! That show was so boring and pointless that it made me want to shoot myself. Seriously, why is that garbage so popular anyway?!

  • You pronounce stuff like shit.

  • Attention duelists! My hair finds your voice to be painful to its ears!

  • Less talk please? xD

    I just wanted to see a list not listen to endless talking. I was bored after 1min. >>;

  • Akira?

I could understand everything else (really the only other one I liked was Elfen Lied, but it wasn't great seeing as how it didn't go the full length like the Manga), but Akira? It's an opinion, but also a wrong one.

Like saying Hitler was the single greatest man to ever walk the Earth.

  • My god the beggining of the video I had the speakers all the way up and tat scared me.

  • Jesus Christ what the hell Is wrong with your mic!?

  • your voice is an abomination to man kind.........

  • i only liked the first season of Sailor Moon

  • Hehe, you sound like that nevel kid from iCarly

  • YUGIOH IS NOT A CASH IN. THE MANGA CAME BEFORE THE CARD GAME

  • @drifter402 and that manga had little to nothing to do with the card game. but the version we got in the U.S. was very much a cash in

  • @cnmaster01 oh well thats hardley anime. its a 4kids dub. everything 4kids does is just 4 the money.

  • Aparently this guy doesnt know the diference between "Sucefull" and "Overrated".

    Akira Overrated?... Realy?

  • It seems to me that the only reason why you chose these titles was to get a rise out of people and consider yourself to not be apart of a crowd that enjoy works of art legitimately praised and revered. Certain titles you have mentioned to be overrated are within countless of reputable "Top 25" lists due to the love and devotion of their fans. You ask why these things are praised? The fans deem it so, viewing these works without a contrived pessimistic narcisistic view of anime. Numbers dont lie.

  • Clannad is not overrated, it`s one of the best slice of life I have ever seen. It deserves all the praise it gets

  • I think that Lucky Star, Ore no Imouto Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai, and Ouran Highschool Hostclub are overrated.

But AKIRA? Come on man. It deserves to be famous.

  • There`s a difference between good and overrated.

Sailormoon is very Good but the dub just sucks= Mew mew power Sucks

Yugioh was good but turned Shit in GX

Elfien Lied is in the middle but a little fucked up for me

  • Elfien Lied is like everyone's first really gorey anime...gotta give it credit.

    Clannad....agreed

    YuGiOh.....agreed

Akira is fucked up but not overrated

Salior Moon was what got me first got me hooked on anime so BACK OFF XD

  • Akira and overrated in the same sentence!!!! You are insane.

  • @grafh1985 It is overrated, and the fact that it's still being defended by drywool animes fans proves so. It's essentially the Dune of anime, it's based off great source material (the mangas are great) and the visuals are spectacular. But the storyline is a gigantic, nonsensical mess. It's clear that the animation came first, and the script was rushed. I know I'm going to be flamed by a mindless mob of anime freaks, but it doesn't sway from the truth.

  • Clannad is seriousely one of the best animes I've ever seen... And I would not consider it as overrated if not the opposite, but that's just my oppinion.

  • you kno, i agree with like everything u said. but that doesnt stop me from liking them. ;) especially YuGiOh and Clannad. i saw Elfien Lied when I was like in middle school and it mentally scarred me. I was so disturbed from all the gore that I tried really hard to forget i ever saw it.

  • Why don't you give us a list of Anime you think are any better than Akira? You did't really give a near justifying example as to why it is so overrated. It deserves the credit it has gotten.

  • OK can you make a sequel one devoted to the underrated anime hiding in the shadows of Code Gease, Naruto, Ouran High School and Lucky Star? ( Im not trying to offend people who are fans of these animes I am an Ouran and Lucky star fan too. ^ u ^) Well I can give you about 4 of them right here!

    #4 Hanamaru Kindergarten

    #3 Potemayo

    #2 Azumanga Daioh

#1 ( My favorite and the funniest I have ever seen.) Ninja Nonscence.

  • your voice is so annoying

  • Clannad....If its overrated, then it must be a good thing. It shows signs of popularity. xD "Gota look at things from a good side"

  • Clannad was interesting but it is overrated :\

  • Also I heard someone say Digimon should have been on the list but i disagree because it NEVER had it's chance in the sun like Pokemon once had and is labelled by most as a ripoff so if anything it's underrated

  • As for Sailor Moon : I would understand considering it overrated 10 years ago but the hype for the show died down MASSIvELY over the years;I don't know anyone who considers it great(aside from a few fangirls here and there)

  • Isn't 'Yugioh!' and 'Sailor Moon' just geared towards little kids anyway? I loved these two shows when I was little but since I grew out of 'em I just realize how stupid they really are. I just think it's weird to even put them on a list that features 'Elfen Lied' and 'Akira.'

But that's just me. I find almost every 'kid' anime is overrated because kids love everything!!!! Remember Pokemon? Yep...

  • I respect your views and your choices but I'm gonna defend Akira

now you didnt criticise the animation(good) since you can't deny that for its time its animation was fucking fantastic

I kind of understand what your saying about the whole condensed version of the manga. but to be quite frank there really isnt as much sexual scenes you think, have you actually watched it all the way through?, or did you stop at the nude scene before tetsuo beats up the biker?

  • @ratmfan1990: The sex I mentioned was when I referred to Urotsukidouji. I was saying that both titles being presented as the figureheads for anime in the West during the late 1980s was a poor choice because people would think all anime was nothing but violence and sex which Akira is known for the former and Urotsukidouji is known for both, especially for its infamous tentacle rape scenes.

  • @ratmfan1990 Hmm...I don't particularly like the Akira film. It wasn't too bad I guess...manga was better though.

  • 2000 views?

    NO ONE CARES

  • 7) Heard good things about it but haven't watched it myself, so I'll skip that one!

    6) Anime's geared towards a female audience don't really appeal to me so I think I'll be too biased for my opinion to really count. Though if Lucky Star and K-On count I thought they were pretty good!

  • 8) If you'd said GX or 5D's we'd be on the same page but the first series I thought was brilliant! Ok so it was about a childrens card game. But other than that it had a great story! The tournaments were epic, the card games exciting, Bakura was an awesome long running villain, not to mention it had some interesting arc villains. I loved Joey/Jonouichi and Yami! Have to disagree on that one I'm afraid.

  • 9) Never seen it and everybody who brings it up says it sucks =S so I have no idea how it could be overrated =P But since I haven't seen it I have no valid opinion so I'll leave it at that!

  • @Nisinator1: Clannad was the latest in a number of popular anime adaptations of storybook games made in Japan milking off the moe craze with its use of cute looking characters and their helpless traits typical of the genre and over-the-top dramatic plot developments to hook in an audience. It's sequel, After Story, is currently the #1 ranked anime on Anime News Network based on popular opinion which leaves me wondering why it's up so high.

  • @ggn3 seriously clannad?

    helpless traits?

sure the characters look cute, and they have helpless traits, but that's not why you watch the anime.

it has an amazing storyline and if you watched season 2 you would know.

and if you tell me you did i won't believe you anyway because you would understand it then -_-

  • May as well have my say on the lower down ones as well

    10) I wouldn't say I completely disagree with everything you said about it but to be honest I love Elfen Lied! The storyline, most of the characters, the action, even the violence (the borderline hentai and cousin incest I could have done without but ah well) it was such a tragic story! And for me it kept me entertained 100%! I don't think it's overrated.

  • @Nisinator1: Quickly point out stuff:

-Elfen Lied never had a proper ending and it left a number of plot points dangling. While violence is shown in regards to the treatment of the diclonius and their response to it by humans, it was a bit over-the-top.

-Some characters either lacked depth (Bandou, Kazukawa) or are just there not doing much for the show's main plot (Mayu, Yuka).

-Fan service agreed. But cousin relationships aren't incestuous. They're legal in most countries, counting Japan.

  • @ggn3 Well even if they're not incestuous, we can at least use the term heavily frowned upon =P

  • @Nisinator1: While the issue is touchy here in the states considering how conservative many Americans are on the matter, countries like Japan don't have much issue with cousin relationships since the genetics aren't so closely similar like one in an immediate family (brother, sister, etc...). Some families that arrange marriages in Japan even encourage cousin relationships.

  • @ggn3 A bit of trivia, I'm actually from England =P. But your point still stands. Anyway I thought I was the one trying to defend Elfen Lied XD

I do understand what you're saying about how they left some plot points hanging but as I was watching it, it just felt more like a cliffhanger. After all the story was mostly about Kouta and Lucy and the ending implies she comes back and they'll probably live happily ever after. So the fact other things aren't resolved isn't such a bad thing.

  • i actually like elfen lied and i think yu-gi-oh is ok, the others are bad. oh, and what's with the fuzzy sound?

  • Akira is overrated? That's a joke right?

  • @RadiantTheLight Is your comment a joke right?

  • I have to admit, I disagree with most of the choices you made. Honestly it just seems you picked all the really popular animes you could, the only one you seemed to leave out was Death Note and Ghost in a Shell.

I'll agree with Elfien lied or however its spelt, but I've never heard people talking well of it before so I wouldn't consider it 'overrated', and most people who like Evangelion like it for big robots killing eachother, nothing more, not the messages :P

  • I don't consider Pokemon,DBZ,Sailor Moon,or Yu-Gi-Oh! overrated because it's kinda fashionable to bash them,& completely overlook their positive points(Pokemon may be uninteresting or appalling to Teens and Adults, but it's for little kiddies anyways,it just ruins it for them if you look at it too seriously. Most of the audience aren't even 10,they like the familiar, not deep and compelling plots, complex storylines,or fleshed-out multi-dimensional characters.)

  • Comment removed

  • There's already a word for shows that get more hype than deserved and that's "overhyped!"

  • I loved Kanon but Clannad was one of the worst animes I have seen. I watched 3 episodes and gave up.

  • You sound like Chris Griffin.

And Elfen Lied is the worst piece of crap I have ever read, and that they even let such a badly drawn manga be published is beyond me.

  • Comment removed

  • clannad has shallow characters?

    o.0

  • 1:35 thats exactly what i thought when i saw that scene XD, but in my personal opinion Clannad and Elfen Lied are not overrated other than that i agree with you so far

and during the Akira name calling part was anyone else thinking "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN" XP

  • Yugioh abridged is 9000 times better than the actual thing

  • Your opinion is terribly fallacious lol.

  • @omegaSB Yes it is!

  • Comment removed

  • um i'm just saying the yugioh anime came before the card game

  • @jwah1411: The Duel Monsters anime is the most well-known of Yu-gi-oh after the 1998 anime. Konami realized the card game storylines with the manga series gained it popularity and they persuaded Kazuki Takakashi, the title's creator, to focus the series more on the card game and from there, it became the overrated media franchise that it is now.

  • I am totally agreed...

But Akira is supposed to have the fear to human experiments and the cold war… also has some thoughts about socialism, but you are right in the part of "unnecessary gore"...

Elfen Lied is for N00BS.... The one success is the opening.....

    I will check the rest...

  • This video has the absolute worst audio quality I have ever heard. I can hardly hear a thing.

  • Elfen Lied was a dumb show

  • Finally. Somebody else other than me who thinks Sailor Moon is overrated.

  • @LJK193 Then you both value he opinions of little children.

    Rather pitiful,actually.

  • @DBZAOTA482 Well I never said it was bad, I just don't find it as great as most claim

  • @LJK193 What are you talking about?Sailor Moon isn't really rated very highly, you're obviously going on fan forums

  • i hate elfen lied

  • LOL AT 1:35...

  • one final point i have to add is that many of those series which were around before akira looked like shit in comparison. i admitt that the animation looked better then alot of the cartoons here in the west but they were still quite scrappy looking. space cobra and gandam look he best (in my opinion) but they were all second rate when compared to akira.

  • They were all on a TV series budget. What do you expect? Seeing as your a seasoned anime fan, you should know well that TV anime titles ran on a weekly schedule and have nowhere the animation budget you would have of an OAV and movie. While not exactly the best looking, they still have more time to explore a cohesive plot and fleshed-out characters than you would in a movie. It's unfair to compare a movie and TV show for quality artwork and animation.

  • thats all true but it doesnt change anything. the fact still remains that budget or no budget akira is the main reason why anime is so mainstream. as for people not knowing what manga was at the time akira was realesed. thats my point exactly. akira was the first one to get peoples attention. i first saw akira in 89 and i loved it. manga became a big thing in the early 90s not late 90s. anyway it was nice shearing opinions with you, we will have to agree to dissagree. in my view akira is great!

  • @slimithy12 what was so god damn special about this movie. I watch it 3 times and it wasn't all that.

  • lastly the series that you mentioned (robotec) was a series and not a movie at all, so it was almost impossible for i to grab the attention of he west on a mass scale like akira did. akira brought japanese animation to he attention of people who had never thought of watching cartoons before. its hard for people to remember now but there was a time when cartoons were exclusively for kid, even disney movies. akira changed animation not just for anime but for all kinds of animated films.

  • Your thoughts of animation being for kids before Akira in America isn't really accurate. Before the 1960s, the major animation studios (MGM, Disney, Warner Bros., etc...) had their animated shorts and films geared towards all audiences. Such cartoons were even used as propaganda in World War II with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck using slapstick violence on Nazis and the Japanese. One Disney cartoon, Education for Death, is a really dark anti-Nazi cartoon. This is stuff you won't see on TV nowadays.

  • it was a movie that gave the west a look into the phyche of he japanese people. that phyche has changed some-what with time but back then it was an accurate picture. its also a film that is hard to understand and makes the viewer want to see more, thust creating a market for years to come. im a child of he 80's and huge anime fan and in my opinion its impossible to overate this movie. it has done so much for japanese cinema and not just anime. even if you dont like, you have to respect it

  • The movie was taking material from a 2,000 plus page manga series that was still ongoing at the time of its production and was barely able to carry along a halfway decent plot. It had too much to try cementing into two hours what with corrupt politicians, a fanatic cult, psychic children, a resistance movement and delinquents. I wouldn't exactly call all that hard to understand. Take anything like Serial Experiments Lain or Kino's Journey though and then you would get a real mind job.

  • im aware that it came from a highly complex series. i have all of them in 6 hard back books but that takes nothing away from he movie. also i didnt mention anything about money made. i said the impact that it made is one of the main reasons for anime being so mainstream. before akira, anime was simply cartoon series like voltron, gandam, g-gorce. they were no different from any other cartoon series out there. akira gave manga movies a platform that no1 single anime movie did, thats a fact

  • One problem with your argument for manga movies though with Akira: manga didn't exactly start booming with fans until around the late 1990s to early 2000s. At the time of Akira's release, most folks wouldn't have heard of Akira being a manga series nor even know what "manga" was.

  • how dare you put akira on this list with shit like yu-gi-ho. akira is thee greatest manga movie ever made. its the sole reason why anime is so mainstream to this day. it gave birth to modern anime as we know it. its like putting mad max on the most overated action movie list, it makes no sense at all. infact you proberbly would not of made this video if it wasent for that movie. pay your respect kid.

  • Akira's rep was a double-edged sword when it first came to the West. It helped make anime more mainstream, but also gave the thoughts to many Western audiences that all anime was nothing but graphic violence and sex. It didn't help that Urotsukidouji came here a few years later to add to those thoughts. Not to mention beyond all the psychic and post-apocalyptic style, you have a movie that has too little time to explore its plot and setting. In other words, Akira's an average movie in my book.

  • theres nothing avarge about akira. the animation is second to non. its the father of all modern animation. its not the movie that was responsable for those steriotypes that you mentioned. movies like the overfeind, lock the superman and fist of the north star are much more responsable then akria is. akira simply paved the way in the west for manga to be credible. its not its fault that shitters followed behind it. really they could of made family dramas after akira and it would of been accepted.

  • Good in animation, I'll agree. But I'm not the type to blindly follow an anime only because it's hailed as some historical milestone by fans. There needs to be meat to a title (in this case, substance and some style) for me to care for it. If not, don't expect me to hop on a bandwagon. While not coming to the states for over a decade, Ghibli films have done way better at cementing anime's status as a viable medium in my books since they have the meat I want and less gore for folks to care for.

  • of course you don have like it. but its one thing not to like it and another thing to say its overated. how can you overate a movie that helped pave the way for japanese cinema for years to come. its true that movies like porko rosso, totoro and pom poko are great movies and would of given anime a better name. however non of those could of made the impact that akira made. remember that ghibli films were around in the 80s but noboby cared. it took a movie like akira to make people take notice.

  • Not really. As I said before, Robotech brought in popularity for anime earlier than Akira in America. And ironically enough, it was a dud in Japan. And it's kind of tough to argue Akira's money making merits when it only made over $550,000 in only two theaters while Ghibli movies have been able to grab millions and wider theatrical release. And I'm sure most folks in the West took from Akira were the snazzy visuals and the oodles of violence that came along with it.

  • it also gave anime a distinctive japanese feel. personally i didnt have a clue that cartoons like gandam and voltron were japanese. they were just cartoons to me. manga or anime were unheard of. after akira japanese anime was taken as the fore runner for adult animaion and it still is considered that best kind of adult cartoon creaters anywhere in the world. thats mainly (not wholly) thanks to akira. i cant think of one single japanese animated movie tha made that kind of impact. can you?

  • The only case of Akira inspiring anyone I've heard of came from Spawn comics creator Todd McFarlane. Otherwise, I've heard of major American animators saying they were more inspired from modern anime titles like FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and anything from Studio Ghibli.

  • its true about bugs bunny ans so on. however they were all slap stick. they were ment to entertain an abult viewer for 10-20 minutes at tops. akira was the first animated movie made dicectly for adults and was supposed

  • as for samurai champloo, that shit was made the other day when compared to how long akira has been out. plus once again it needs 2-3 series to make an impact on it audiance. akira took 2 hour of viewing time to get me hooked for life. anyway nice talking to you

  • continued

was supposed to be taken as seriouly as any other mainstream 15 rated movie out there.

  • infact they did with movie's like totoro, grave of the fire flies and much more. its just that here in the west we focused alot more on movies like overfied and the more violent ones. however akira is the predecessor to all of them good and bad. if it sucked then there would of been no anime in the west for at least another 10-15 years and it would of came in the form of dbz or pokimon. so you should be greatful for akira otherwise anime would not be credible at all. it would be for kids only

  • I recall anime having more serious plots and content made before Akira which included building popularity that came before the film. Robotech was big in the mid-1980s in America as the first anime to offer serious drama and story after kiddie fodder like Astro Boy and Speed Racer. The late 1960s and 1970s saw a change in Japan of the mindset animators had as they created titles like Gundam and Lupin the 3rd that would appeal to older audiences for having more serious stories and characters.

  • @slimithy12 Not true, dbz got watered down to appeal to everyone that we wouldn't need akira

  • akira is a dumbed down and compressed version of the books. however in hindsight it really is a movie on its own. it stand apart from the book now in my opinion. akira done for anime what 2001 space opyessy done for sci-fi. the movie is not better then the book but it done more for sci-fi then then the book ever could. just like akira has done more for anime then the books could of. it truly is the greatest of all anime and it should be treated accordingly.

  • The same can be said of other sci-fi titles that helped start or innovate aspects of the genre that serve as later inspirations for future titles yet were on a more expansive scale of plotting and character development. Star Blazers in the 1970s was the first anime in America to feature an ongoing storyline. Gundam served as the first "real robot" mecha title in Japan. While the show was unpopular, it's movie adaptations in the early 1980s were more popular and were seen as...

  • ...the major start of the anime "boom" in the 1980s that made anime more mainstream in Japan. Both of these titles helped originate the space opera and mecha opera genres that boomed in popularity long before Akira was spawned by Katsuhiro Otomo (both manga and anime) in the mid to late 1980s.

  • i do agree that akira would have been better as mini anime series, but its pretty much what got me into anime!!

  • I love Elfen Lied! The nudity is pointless, yes, but the Gore is the whole story about the Diclonius.

I hate Yugioh, its like all the other shows like Pokemon and Bakugan where a monster comes out of a card.

Sailor Moon, I refuse to watch because of the drawings........

And the rest ive never watched.

  • okay personaly i like most of the anime up there, id just like to say that elfin lied is niche, it's expected that the gore is over the top. yu-gi-oh is defenatly overrated.

depends what version of sailor moon you watched, cus' the japanese made me cry and i have a friend that watches it for the violence.

  • This just seems like a video of why you don't like certain animes. ;o

Whether a anime is "overrated" to you or not, it doesn't change that the fan base likes the anime to the extent it does because of what the anime is.

  • Quality matters more than popularity in my book. Popularity tends to have a bad habit in most instances of sucking folks into going into an anime that's hyped to be the best thing since sliced bread yet turns out to be subpar and folks watch no more than a few episodes of said title. Subpar in my book means following the same kind of plot and character molds I've seen enough times in anime or just being very flawed in premise. A majority of the titles on my list are meant to reflect this.

  • Popularity can do that, but things are also popular because of being interesting to many as well, since something does have to be good in a anime to get enough fans for it to be dubbed "popular". Whether it is from the first or latter reason though, each anime is unique to what it is and the people who like such animes like them for that. To be more direct, I feel like you simply do not like these animes and are saying they are "overrated" because of it, despite how many people who DO like them.

  • Not quite. A couple of the titles on this list I do have guilty pleasures for yet I'm not gonna admit that they are the greatest things in the world since they have a number of flaws that keep them from being "great," particularly Elfen Lied and Eva. You can call it hypocritical from your standpoint, but it's more ignorant to think that just because said title is popular than others automatically qualifies it as a great title, especially if it's something that won't be popular years from now.

  • @ggn3 Overrated doesn't mean a bad popular series, undeserved high amount nor a hyped up series,it just means something not as great as people generally percieve;I like about almost half the anime you listed in both parts but most of them I understand you placing on the list

Oh and about Sailor Moon,Pokemon,& Yu-Gi-Oh being listed, they are not rated highly, why not put something like Code Geass,Bleach,& Rurouni Kenshin instead?

  • ok this is my opineon the only good anima in there is elfen lied

  • The amount gore in Elfen Lied is a representation on how violent humans are as a species.

  • Compared to other violent anime I've seen where the intense violence fitted well with the show's story like Higurashi, Berserk and Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal, Elfen Lied's violence was over-the-top and at most points has little to no relevance to the show's story being more used for shock value than symbolism. What kind of symbolism is there when people are getting torn limb from limb or having their heart torn out during Lucy's gory institution escape?

  • Haha, I agree with you on most of these, except for Akira. But you do have a point in that it did have a lot of violence and gore, certainly more than was necessary, but i liked how it conveyed a sense of being mentally disturbed. and, Yeah it was annoying that they said each others names every five seconds, haha.

  • YU-GI-OH is not overated my opinion.

  • I like Akira and Sailor Moon, but I can see what you mean. Akira is just nonstop violence and gore with anti-establishment overtones. Sailor Moon is pretty one dimensional and after the first season gets boring. They are good to watch, just overrated.
