Wow did this bring back some memories. I thought these were gone forever. The Soupy Sales Show was one of my favorites. The mask was indeed finally unmasked in the final episode, he was Nikita Kruschev!
"Be true to your teeth and they won't be false to you!"
It's so wonderful to see these Philo Kvetch shows again, by the way, I have a definite memory that when "The Mask" was unmasked at the end he turned out to be a very famous person -any one else remember?
Anyway I hope, hope hope we will see a Philo Kvetch DVD soon! We love you Soupy!
@mamojica -- Well, yes and no. Another local station -- I think it was WNBC -- had aired a piece earlier in the week involving a dead ringer look-alike for Nikita Khrushchev, who at the time, may have still been the leader of the dreaded Soviet Union. Now, I don't know whether Soupy had been planning to end the Philo Kvetch series at that time, but having this fellow handy made him perfect for playing "The Mask" as his identity was finally revealed to Philo Kvetch fans.
Ditto for me, bummix ~ oregano always reminded me of Onions Oregano ~ and I'm a chef! NEVER forgot this! It was better when I was six, but boy! did I worship this back then!
I also have been waiting decades to see this again. For me the funniest bit always was the Mask spraying air freshener at Onions Oregano whenever he opened his mouth to speak. For 40+ years I have never once seen or tasted oregano without thinking of Onions Oregano. Many thanks to Momojica for posting this.
I believe "Philo Kvetch" was seen only on his extended Saturday show during 1965, where he also presented several "real" serial chapters as well. This tape is a "work print", because Soupy was supposed to dub some narration over the action on the rooftop, but they're missing here.
I loved the Soupy Sales Show growing up and I remember that when I went away to camp in the Summer if 1965 I was panicking because I was missing the adventures of Philo Kvetch. Thanks for posting this rare gem!
The picture of the Mask at the beginning gave me nightmares. This is pretty classic stuff. I've met Soupy several times and I never brought up Philo Kvetch-probably because it virtually forgotten. This skit was really a departure for his show at the time.
Wow! As a fellow Soupy Sales video poster, I salute you! With a guest star, yet! These were special segments of Soupy's New York Show. I think we were amazed just to see Soupy "on location." It's amazing how little Soupy had to do to get a laugh... but how far he'd go to get one. Didn't Leonard Bernstein say, "Sure, I like what Jerome Robbins did, but what I'd really like to see is this music with my original idea... a guy being chased by a gorilla on a rooftop."
i've been wanting to see this for decades. i was a big soupy fan growing up and always remembered the adventures of philo kvetch. i thought it was lost for ever like many of soupy's shows. thank you , thank you for posting this. brings back great memories.
