If only it wasn't Medea.... She sings the aria really beautiful... so delicate and lyrical... just listen and forget for a while that this is Medea ( I know it's difficult:)). She sings like it was a delicate little woman like Mimi (in interpretation I mean, not in music certainly) it sounds good. It's totally a new aria....
But, sorry. This is Medea. And Medea IS Callas, no doubt. Caballe creates something new - but it's not Medea no more.
I find comments a little bit severe towards the Caballe's Medea. Indeed it is not its best role but the style is impeccable and her vocal state is satisfactory knowing that she is already in decline! The only problem to my opinion it's because it's necessary to be credible in this role, that asks for a physical implication which the great Spanish diva can't give!
to sing drammatic soprano with pianisimmi and without consonants! this is ammazingly wrong from a vocal point of view while it sounds like light donizzeti from a stylistical point of view
She's fine in this scene, actually. It's the fast, furious parts of this score that do not suit her. She might be closer to the score and the original intent in this scene than is the Callas version that many of us use as our measure for this role. The Callas rendition is a very emotive, nearly Romantic one...but this isn't a Romantic opera. Still, the Callas version is, well, savagely effective. Unforgettable once heard.
Ok, this is 1989. Caballé's voice sounds quite fragile and has lost most of its former precision and impeccable legato line. She really fails in several notes and other lines are sung with little accuracy.
That said, I still think she's adequate. Her musicality, regal expression and essentially beautiful tone are still there. I prefer a more "tigress" Medea like Callas', but her interpretation is valid.
Che combina? Non sa la parte?

completement d'accord. j'ai l'impression qu'elle pense aux hamburgers au lieu de la musique.

Misericordia!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Che pasticcio!!!!! Una Medea asmatica e claudicante!!
Per giunta spaurita e confusa!!!
Aiutooooooooooooooooooooooo salvate la Caballè!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
morachioli1 2 years ago
@woytynowska She sings it that way, because her voice will no longer stay open so that she can sing it the way she might have 10 years earlier.

You can tell she is having a lot of difficulty here singing this aria. Pity because I love love love Montserrat Caballe

One shouldn't compare her approach with Callas. She is great in her own way. Bravissima!!!

Caballé is a GREAT Singer! But her Medea is awful!
Medea in Callas`s Interpretation and Voice IS BETTER!

No sabe implorar ni ser cruel como exige el rol de Medea, sólo sabe cantar!
She doesn´t know how to pray, to crave and being cruel as the Medea rol, just she knows how to sing!

Montserrat was having lots of health troubles in this period- you can see it in her face. She was at a disadvantage

Anyway I like her and I admire her, but I think this role isn´t her best.

The public is very prudent...this difficult aria here presents transpositions and errors (crudel....).

And here she sung badly... out of her voice, out of her role. But she didn't care.
KILLERADVICE 4 years ago
I don't think it was that she didn't care, but the serious illnesses that plagued her around this time in her career.

She sung everything but this is the main problem...
