@colinwhitrock Who cares if it takes forever to program this? The fundamental requirement of music is that it be enjoyable to listen to, which this is not. I don't have to like something because it was tedious to put together, nor do I have to like something because it's difficult to put together, which this is not.

You, my friend, are quite mislead. Sorry you felt the need to start a flame war because that you decided Daedelus is talentless based on a 30 second clip of one of his DJ sets. Daedelus is a PRODUCER. He produces music. Whether you like it or not, producing music takes an immense amount of talent. Yeah, what he's doing in this video is just DJing with a MIDI controller, it still takes more talent than you think.
It is a music instrument. A digital music instrument. Is Dj'ing a talent? Is drum programming a talent? I know real musicians who can't program a drum machine. I know drum programmers who can't play a piano. They are all musicians in their own right. They make music. ITS 2011....... THESE ARE THE INSTRUMENTS OF OUR TIME.
@KozmotheKid Who cares if a real musician can't program a drum machine? He could if he wanted to, but being able to do such a thing when you're an actual musician is tertiary to making REAL MUSIC that requires ACTUAL TALENT. You're like a child not to understand this, but that's okay -- I'm sure there are plenty of other idiots who agree with you because they can't think for themselves, eitehr.
@WithExtremePrejudice My point is once you learn your instrument. The Technical stuff: chords progressions, how to read or play by ear, it is about style because there is no more effort required to do the technical stuff. Style sets each musician apart. Once a musicianship has got down the technicalities of their instrument, what makes them unique? Judging by your name, you are just not open minded. I don't want to change you.
@KozmotheKid Who cares if a real musician can't program a drum machine? He could if he wanted to, but being able to do such a thing when you're an actual musician is tertiary to making REAL MUSIC that requires ACTUAL TALENT. You're like a child not to understand this, but that's okay -- I'm sure there are plenty of other idiots who agree with you because they can't think for themselves, either.
@WithExtremePrejudice Not really an instrument, is it? Doesn't play notes. It's basically a glorified step sequencer/clip launcher. And the skill comes in setting the thing up.
@tactical92fs Sort of like how all of the skill in becoming a guitar/sax/drum/whatever player is in prepping/memorizing/seeing what goes where/hearing what sounds good over and going into what/etc?
@helsquiades Relax, my friend, relax. No one is saying using midi equipment requires the same skill as playing an acoustic instrument. God knows Justice has nothing on Mozart. Just saying you're comparing apples and oranges.
@WithExtremePrejudice The talent, my very perturbed friend, comes in creating music that moves people. This is a step up from your typical DJ, so if anything you should be glad electro is heading in the right direction. Used to be just lazers and smoke machines.
@WithExtremePrejudice I know you're probably just trolling but I used to think the same thing (as a musician of 11 years) until I realized what a revolution this kind of stuff is (bare with me here). Basically, technology for producing/recording music has become insanely available and affordable which has allowed for several innovations in production techniques. Musicians like myself can now be more creative than ever because I can invent never before heard tones and then write songs withthem
@WithExtremePrejudice (2nd comment) so an increasing amount of these artists are taking advantage of this and were seeing a whole new synthesis of genres, one of the most significant of which happened with daft punk in the 90s. They brought together what is imo boring lame techno house and fused it with sexy george clinton style funk bass lines to create a new sound that was musically informed. Today, artists like Justice, SebastiAn (or anyone from edbanger) continue to blur these genre lines
@WithExtremePrejudice 3rd comment. so I think about it this way. I play rock music. Any time I'm going to write a song or if someone tells me about a rock song, etc, I already know it probably features bass, drums, guitar, vocals, and maaaaybe some sort of keys/synth. In other words, it isnt hard to tell how the song was made/whats creating the sounds but with well produced electronic music, I have a much harder time identifying how the sounds were created which takes a whole new kind ofskil
@WithExtremePrejudice what makes music different from just noise then? I'd say sound has to at least have rhythm and possibly melody for it to be musical. Hows electronic music not music? It uses all the same concepts as every other kind of music (it has rhythm and pitch/melody). whether or not it was made electronically or acoustically, it has enough qualities to be music (obviously). also, machines don't create music by themselves, humans still have to write/perform it, theyre useful.
@mexicanstorm I'd say that this is just noise. It sounds like a flatulent expulsion, and judging by how this video is rated, I'd say that a lot of people agree with me. The primary requirement of music is that it is pleasant to listen to, which this is not. To say otherwise is just asinine.
That this discussion is now devolving into an argument about the difference between noise and music is just reason enough for me not to bother with this silliness any longer. Go troll someone else.
@WithExtremePrejudice Obviously whether or not something is "pleasant to listen to" is a personal opinion, which also isnt exclusive to music. I personally think the sound of the ocean is pleasant to listen to but that doesn't make it music. As for this video sounding like a "flatulent expulsion" (redundant term btw), that's most likely due to the shitty quality of the video, I'm sure the sound was much richer in person.
@mexicanstorm "Pleasant to listen to" is not a personal opinion -- it's obvious to anyone who listens to this. No one with any sense would deny that this music is abrasive and (by proxy) obnoxious. You are painting yourself a fool to pretend otherwise. I'm sure that this garbage sounded just as flatulent in person.
@WithExtremePrejudice So you literally think everyone has the same ideas as you? You don't think anyone finds this "pleasant to listen to"? Hes just able to play these shows and upload videos of them and get hundreds of thousands of views even though everyone on the planet feels the same way you do about him? Obviously this is not the case, some people like him, some don't, not everyone feels the same way. Good job trollin btw, I'm sure you'll keep it up regardless of how much sense I make.
@mexicanstorm No, but I do think there are quite a few people who laud music as innovative or creative or whatever, all the while ignoring what their eyes and ears are telling them, which is incredibly pretentious. Who cares if this video has over a hundred thousand views? Clearly there are a lot of people who agree with me about this garbage, since this video has far more dislikes than likes. Listen to what your ears tell you is good, not what the odious denial area of your ego says is good.
@WithExtremePrejudice if your tastes in music are so constipated why are you watching this video theres loads of shit music on YouTube so stop slagging off our top DJs
@ZukunftMorder No, you don't, you just want something you can pretend to listen to so you can cross your arms and say "AHA! I knew your opinion wasn't worth shit!" without even actually listening to it.
@WithExtremePrejudice The talent comes in after you're done setting it up, ie the composition and sequencing of the audio/musical material he's manipulating with this device. Stop equating musical skill with the technical skill required to fret a string or hit a key appropriately and at the right time. In other words, Beethoven isn't remembered so much for his piano playing, but his writing.
@fierylungs You don't know what true talent is. I'd explain it to you, but frankly, talent is something you either have or don't, and you just don't get it. This doesn't take talent. It's bullshit button mashing.
Funny, my comment wasn't meant to be insulting but you (being the insecure guitarist you are) took it that way. I also like how you think you know ANYTHING about my playing abilities.
@davidburkett95 I believe that you believe this takes skill. However, regardless of whatever other dumb shit you believe, this still doesn't require talent. Next.
@MageAtYou Hey, you think your headache might not be caused by the actual music? Maybe it's caused by this pile of shit sound quality. Sounds like my ears are getting raped by an elephant if the elephant had a disease where it really really hurt to have sex so he started trumpeting while he raped my ears.
I saw him play in Atlanta, but this setup was confusing. The lights moved to the music, but none of the keys with samples are labeled. How does he do it?
I think they're mapped out and labeled on the computer from my understanding of how Monomes work.
And I'm sure with how much he uses a Monome its just like how people can look at a keyboard and find a C or a G. He probably programs the buttons similarly in every song so he remembers most of it.
