The last of the true over-engineered MBs. My brother-in-law had a '99 that was as flawless as any vehicle could be. It was solid, quiet, comfortable and reliable. He traded it for a 2002 S430 Sport. What a heap of junk that was. The difference in quality was obvious the moment you sat inside but what made it a complete heap was the visits to the dealer's service department every two weeks or so. Should have never sold the '99 - that was truly a masterpiece.
These things really don't look out of place anywhere, whether it's driving across the desert, smuggling drugs over the Mexican border or on a racetrack.

Went into production 20 years ago today on August 6, 1991 as a 1992 model along with other with the 1992 SL-Class, E-Class(new 400E & 500E), and 190E models. The SEC would do so in the third quarter of 1992.

w126 is the only S-Class which was produced for 12 years. Actually it is needless to say but for the sake of contributing to your knowledge. W126 is the "TOP OF THE "S" SERIES" which is ever and will have ever been produced.

This was simply the best era for the S-Class (92-99)...really the 98-99 because of that 5sp transmission with the adaptive pedal. I think that mercedes Inlines were better...but I have a stupid, little, cheaply made, 2004 C240...2 of the door handles broke, back panel fell off the drvrs seat,drvr window button broke, sunscreen gets stuck, my window trick with the key wont work, and yea it's just pretty much slow, and horrible on gas...and just not the W140s.
I just bought a '99 S320 gorgous car love it i went from a 2000 clk to that, and i must say that iam very have driving the most reliable cars i the world, they should bring these cars back into production!!!!
Hi Guys I want to mention from a Senior who was working in mercedes B company here in Manhattan NY, for 25 years. I meet this man this year 2009 and i ask him what is your opinion about the mercedes s500 1995? compare with the new mercedes s500 2001-2009.
He said the mercedes s500,91-98 was made it with the best materials and the best quality of the interior and exterior.
and finally said this new mercedes s500 2001-2009 are just only futuristic cars no more great quiality just plastic.

The earlier ones (pre 96) Were of higher quality all around. They had the 4 speed transmissions that are bulletproof transmissions compared to the electronic ones of the later W140s. It really depends on what you find though, you might find a W126 in better condition than any W140 in your area and if so I'd go with a W126 in that case. I've had both cars (86' 420SEL, 97' S420)

I've heard that the pre 96' W140s were the best ones to get the main reason being quality in the parts. In contrast I've also heard the 98s and 99s are the most reliable years for the W140. The 97' I had was just a nightmare though, it looked like a showroom car but it started falling apart literally just a few weeks after I bought it. You name it and it probably happened to my 97'.
Whichever year you decide on make sure to have your mechanic look it over thoroughly. Good luck

@bilalahmed2123 my fam has both 1998 W140 and 2006 W220 and still have them now, both are luxurious and a lot of advanced features, but i tend to think the 1998 has better build though, the 2006 is starting to give us problems to fix already at such younger age as compared, but other than that the newer car has more power and smoother gear change etc etc

I really have never driven a mercedes but im a big mercedes fan and when the 2000-2006 s class came out I used to love it (i was a kid) and maybe that's why I tend to defend it. But after so many comments I guess mercedes did really lower its quality, and I have to agree that the newer 2007+ really look cheap especially in the interior. I dont know whats going on with MB, they are letting BMW take over the #1 luxury car maker!

The W140 is one of the finest cars ever built. It is also the last Mercedes Benz S-Class designed by Daimler-Benz AG Stuttgart prior to the Chrysler merger, to bear the S-Class badge. I am the proud owner of a '96 S420, going on 5 years now (replaced my '84 300SD that I lost in a road accident and prior to that a '79 300D). Hands down, no substitue.

@bilalahmed2123 my fam has both 1998 W140 and 2006 W220 and still have them now, both are luxurious and a lot of advanced features, but i tend to think the 1998 has better build though, the 2006 is starting to give us problems to fix already at such younger age as compared, but other than that the newer car has more power and smoother gear change etc etc

@datpimpinboy The 2000-2006 are truly junk, i know alot of people that own them and nothing but problems and cheaply made cause Mercedes was with chrysler american company so they fucked up the quality, 1999 was the last year for this car and the only car that was OVER ENGINEERED like no other i own a 1999 S320W and the quality and reliability it too amazing!!

I really have never driven a mercedes but im a big mercedes fan and when the 2000-2006 s class came out I used to love it (i was a kid) and maybe that's why I tend to defend it. But after so many comments I guess mercedes did really lower its quality, and I have to agree that the newer 2007+ really look cheap especially in the interior. I dont know whats going on with MB, they are letting BMW take over the #1 luxury car maker!

The W140 is one of the finest cars ever built. It is also the last Mercedes Benz S-Class designed by Daimler-Benz AG Stuttgart prior to the Chrysler merger, to bear the S-Class badge. I am the proud owner of a '96 S420, going on 5 years now (replaced my '84 300SD that I lost in a road accident and prior to that a '79 300D). Hands down, no substitue.

This car is great i have drive it but i dont owen it, i have drive 500S, and i have drive BMW 740IL, i think BMW more sporty and Daynamics, and better handiling,and i also found that mercedes 500s is more comfortable and silent, and the vibration level is alittel pit less than BMW, But mercedes W140 dosent have navigation system and TV screen,
like BMW, the accelration of both car is simler

And one of their most impressive automobiles also... -but nearly to puffed up! The 600 SEL (the top version) has a weight of 2,700 kilogramms!!!...
