  • I wore a white sport coat to my senior prom in 1960. With the exception of my two children's weddings, that was one of four times in my life I felt pretty sharp. The fourth time was my wedding day (48 years ago).

  • Hello folks .Just I wunt to say that since the year I start to hear this song in the place I was worked and This song liked alot,I never imagine that this song were a clasic country song and , just I wuant to say I liked the interpretation

  • To hork 111 yep -you could be right - why didnt' I think of the carnation

-probably too concerned with my blue suede shoes.

  • its so simple and so complacated all at the same time

  • I'm black and in my 50's, steeped in '70's funk, but I love this song. A good song is a good song, period.

  • @hork111 Amen! =)

  • ooohhhh take me back to the late 50's why not this song did me in then and does the same now that I am 68 ... great musical talent never fails still this song shakes me to the toes WOW

  • Marty hit #2 in Billboard, 6-3-57. God bless ya, Joan, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great week! (#2 pop, that is.)

  • i dated a guy who took me to an event in a white sport coat,(no pink carnation), but i always think of him fondly when i hear this...very sweet

  • And if you are ever in London,England we could go shopping for another white sport coat and I know where they do a very good deal on pink carnations !! - Frantor

  • I was in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on my first stint in the Merchant Navy when

I first heard this - loved it.

On reaching Frisco, rushed out and bought a white sport coat - unfortunately nothing happened - love you all who love our precious past

  • @frantor1937 Perhaps you forgot the pink carnation.

  • P.S. The Aggie Lou is still there! It's at 712 N. 12th St,

  • Wow, what serendipity! I visited KSU for the first time in 30 years last summer and found my dorm room to be almost exactly as it was in the 1970s. Now, you send me this comment, and it brings back all of the great fun we had at the bar called "The Aggie Lounge". It was approximately 1 block due east or south of Varney's bookstore tucked back in an alley. I never could get my directions straight in Manhattan. This song and Ferlin Husky's "I Hear a Little Rock Callin": were our song choices!

  • Gunter, Texas 1958 Junior/Senior Banquet Theme - Any of you guys out there.....

  • What beautiful memories this song has brought back my late husband used to sing it to me all the time we had 32 yrs together and raised 8 children thanks so much for posting and sharing it with every one!

  • One of my all time favorite memory songs! We used to go as a group of crazy guys to the Aggie Lou in Manhattan, KS, play this song over and over along with Ferlin Husky's "I hear a Little Rock Callin'", play Magnetron pinball and shuffleboard, and drink as many beers as we could handle that night! Great times, now 35 years ago.

  • @JHKealing That's funny I just happened to glance at this comment and I go to school here at KSU. Was Aggie Lou a bar or is it what we call Aggieville now?

  • My neighbor Bertha got to see Marty live at the Skyline Club in Austin,TX, in 1959.She said "He sang and played the piano and had on a white sports coat and a pink carnation!"

  • The one and only song I would ever do on kereoke I know spelled wrong}

  • Reminds me of the time when my oldest brother skipped school(1960's) with some of his friends and went to Mexico and came back wearing a white sport coat, a pink carnation in his pocket, black loafers with white tops, a cap that snapped down in front and a big smile. He looked cool to me! He got the crap beat out of him, he was 17 years old. My mom was A little woman, but could swing a belt. Billy thought it was worth every lick! He loved that song! He never skipped school again though. lol

  • I remember so many hot summer afternoons on our Tennessee horse farm in the late '50's and early '60's; cleaning stables and feeding the animals alongside my Daddy as the rudimentary music systerm in our barns played these wonderful hits from Marty Robbins, Kitty Wells, Patsy Cline, Faron Young, Sonny James and so many others who made often grueling and hot work less of a chore and more of a dream. Music makes the memories.

  • @jeff62rey Nice recounting of your memories. Thanks for sharing them.

  • i always thought this song said" why snort coke" not white sports coat

  • @Foxxie2009 because you are an idiot or for another reason?

  • my mom told me this story how she first met my uncle Paul. My mom was going out with my dad at the time and this is how she met my crazy uncle Paul:

My uncle Paul came walkin' down the stairs to show my dad, his white sport coat and a pink flower and a cane he had in his hand while singing

"a white, sport coat and a pink carnation"

My mom saw him and said "AWW HOW CUTE!" ^-^

My uncle Paul got embarrassed and lightly tapped my mom on the head with his cane and said "fuck you." ..good times.

  • Not saying i dont like 50 and 60's music i love it but im not crazy about this one and not because my dad made it, it doesn't suck just much not into it. i read some of the comments on here and some say it's great well im glad you think so really, Just think, two kids wrote this song, i dont like my dad but give credit were its do

  • My dad and a friend of his wrote this song when they were kids, they saw an newspaper clipping and made the song sent it in and never herd nothing till one day they herd it on the radio. They did not know about having it patton to protect it. My dad is an ass has nothing to do with us and I don’t even like the song, but John Salsberg in Sharon pa got this song stolen off him.

  • I'm in a concert tomorrow night where three choirs, male voice, female voice and mixed are singing songs together, our own separate song. Part of it consists of the male voice and the male sections of the mixed choir singing two songs together and this is one of them. and they sound pretty damn good singing it. We women get our pieces to btw.

  • @agoradzwn gotta be true...aint no other explanation

  • This is for my Grand-Father R.I.P!!!

  • Marty was a very gifted singer... he had a style that was hard to beat and a sound that can't be matched.... add the humor and comedy ... he was one in a million....

  • He only had one ear.

  • For my dear friend Sonny!

  • This was one of the first tunes that got me turned on to Classic & New country music! I've been a fan ever since.....Love Patsy, Reba, Dolly etc.......

  • One of countrys all time greats. thanks

  • Mary Robbins has the best voice of all the country singers ever. What a classy guy too. Thanks for sharing!

  • I love this song. Thanks for posting.

  • A white sports coat and a pink carnation

I'm all dressed up for the dance

A white sports coat and a pink carnation

    I'm all alone in romance

  • Wonderful combination---Marty Robbins and Ray Conniff.

  • @tonywsmith2 You're right. And don't forget Mitch Miller who was the A&R guy for Columia records and produced Marty, Guy Mitchell, Don Cherry (the singer) and Johnny Mathis, all backed by Conniff at one point. And don't the background vocalists on "A White Sport Coat..." sound just like the Mitch Miller singers? Their diction is perfect and they have such a full, rich sound. Mitch and Ray got that sound by arranging the vocalists in four-part quartets. Gives a much richer sound. Pure genius!

  • Good songs are timeless and ageless! This song is far more splendid than rap and hip-hop, which I detest and fail to recognize as music genres. Younger generations ought to enjoy what their parents' generations listened to in their youth.

Thanks for posting this clip. This is another treasure for me.

  • Daddy's fav............. miss you daddy

  • Such a dreamy voice.

  • One of my all-time favorites. Thanks for posting.

    angeleyes990

  • my grandmas favorite :)

  • A #1 hit on the Country & Western Charts by Marty Robbins. This was the fourteenth #1 C&W song to hit #1 in the Rock Era. It was also Marty's second #1 in the Rock Era. This song also made the Top 40 charts, but didn't hit #1. Marty, you left us too soon.

  • I remember when my parents used to play this on a Sunday morning with their bedroom door locked when I was 10. Now Im 48 and I dont listen to Eminem.

  • I remenber when my mom use to play this in the car when I was 5 :) Now I'm 15 and listen to eminem ;D

  • Gunfighter Ballads..... Best country album he ever made.

  • This was THEEEE Prom song of 1957, it was played everywhere you went in those days!!!!! I graduated in 57 and God the memories

  • I saw Mr. Robbins in 71'or72' at the California 500.

  • Excellent!!

  • How smart I would say BRILLIANT

  • Cafe9802 is correct, this sounds like the original 1957 version that Marty release on Columbia records which I have. Living in the New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia area it was exceptional to have a Country Western Song played by all the radio stations in that Metro area but this record made that list and was a big hit in the City. Marty was a great guy with a nice personality. RIP. Ron--Highway Stars Magazine

  • This is the only version I knew of, until I checked things out on youtube. There's more White Coats than meet the eye. This is the original, the one I grew up to remember...not necessarily the version I prefer to listen to now that youtube has arrived. Thx4 postin' a classic

  • Way before my time but a good song. Too bad they don't seem to play it much even on the oldies stations.

  • Always liked this song....

  • liked this song so much i actually wore a white sport coat and pink carnation to the Dowling - St. Joseph prom in 1962.

  • aww this song is beautiful some times i cry cuz i wish i lived in the 40's and 50's soo beautiful the most presciouse time to live in

  • La chanson préférée de mon père, je l'entends encore siffler cette chanson, que de bon souvenir, 21 ans demain que tu nous a quitté... je t'aime papa xxxxx

  • He was so fine and had the GREATEST voice in country music for many years!

  • @stephen1622 Marty Still is!

  • THE song at every graduation in 1957, a great song!

  • This is a good song

  • You're close dards...that old Buffett album was called A White Sport Coat And A Pink CRUSTACEAN...not carnation!!

Obviously a nod and a thank you to Marty Robbins, apparently Buffett was a fan of his.

  • One of the best country singers ever....a huge loss to the country music profession.

  • I listened to this song on a crystal set I built in grammer school.

  • "And in a blue blue mooooooon~"

It's so pretty. Must be Marty. El Paso is great too!

  • Hee was so fine looking

  • The music in this song is passable, but everything in this song that makes it the great tune it is .. is Marty's voice, Ray Coniff was fortunate indeed to be allowed to record with the great COUNTRY singer Marty.

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome :D

  • Cool song!

  • Gone way too young.

  • Great Song!

  • The arranger and conductor of this song from 1957 had an interesting career, selling 70 million copies of 110 albums during his lifetime.

That man was Ray Conniff, the most brilliant arranger of the 20th century.

Marty's voice is great, but listen to the vocal harmonies, the beat, the instrumentation, the guitar, the tinkling piano, that all belongs to Ray Conniff !

Check out my 110 music playlists for ANY year back to 1900 - over 4 generations of pop music, a trip back in time . . . . . .

  • I always thought it was " A White Sports Coat and a Pink Crustacean " I'm so confused!!

  • @smokiebird06 ..............That was the Name of a Jimmy Buffet Album from about the early 1970's......lol

  • My dad did have a tape with this song on it. That was many years ago I heard I am now 30. Ah yeah good times.

  • This was my late partner's favourite song of all time. He died 5 years ago. Miss you Neil, xxx.

  • Great classic tune by Marty for sure. This is a song that you can listen to over and over again and not get tired of hearing it. Unfortunately there aren't many songs songs that I can say the same about these days. Thanks for posting it. :)

  • when i was a young boy, maybe ten years old, my parents had a L.P K-tel hits of the 50's, this was on it amongst other great songs, i loved the L.P, and still remember all these songs, thanks and god bless for posting

  • Here in Australia it was released under the Majestic label...as I recently picked it up from an op shop, and love it!

  • As long as we can keep these parts of our culture alive, America won't completely die.

  • I was in the 6th grade when he had this hit.. It was a huge crossover hit...thyat was when the world was young and we were all real Americans.

  • Wish I could of been there.

  • My late husband could sing this song just like Marty,we loved it and 32 yrs later we were still singing it and dancing to it.

  • Ray Conniff was great and did a great job with Marty Robbins on this song. The Conniff group sold as many songs as anyone. RWB They are still a favorite as is Marty.. RWB

  • a favorite when we were dating in the 50's!! Those were the days...I love you my sweetie 50 years of marriage later!

  • My grandfather used to sing this song

all the time. I was pretty young

when he died so I was surprised when

I remembered this song so clearly...

  • chkjns... thanks. I didn't know that. Conniff was a star in his own right, Ray Conniff Singers. Now that I knew!

  • This topped the charts in 1957. For those who don't think they know the music of Ray Conniff..........everything on this track except Marty's voice is Ray Conniff, lead arranger/conductor at Columbia Records ! ! ! Ray had the midas touch for arranging music, and eventually sold over 70 MILLION albums in his own right.

My 'Ray Conniff '50s Starmaker' playlist features the artists Ray's music helped push toward stardom.

  • My dad loved this song. He just passed away almost two months ago. I miss him dearly. He always talked about this song
