Awwww! This is right around the time I began watching TPIR with my dad! As I said in another TPIR opening video, it was my dad's favorite program, and whenever he was off from work and I was off from school we'd watch this together. Now all I need is a bowl of Cheerios with a spoonful of sugar sprinkled on top and a banana and I'm instantly transported back to early childhood. :)
The most amazing thing is that besides Barker's hair (and the use of Gene Wood), TPIR has not changed for so many years (until Drew Carey replaced him).
Gene did a great job, but it honestly sounds like you are watching a whole different show when he announced it. Rod Roddy had almost the same kind of timbre as Johnny did, which made him a logical successor (I hesitate to say "replacement" since nobody could really replace Johnny).
But it sure was great that Gene & others substituted until they could find a permanent announcer. I would bet since they were doing it for one of their own, they took no money for the job.
@ericandy88 Yeah, I would have loved Gene to take over for John but I do agree that Rod was a great successor. Everyone has to succeed someone but they will never replace them. At least for a time, we got to hear the other popular Goodson-Todman announcer on The Price Is Right.
@ericandy88 I guess Gene Wood filled in for the late Johnny O. after Family Feud w/Richard Dawson left abc, plus, Gene Wood was not only interim announcer for the CBS Version of TPIR, but also, the syndicated version with Tom Kennedy
Rich Fields wasn't so good when he first announced on TPiR, but now I think he's a great announcer and a great on-camera entertainer. Agreed, Gene Wood is one of the legends--I miss him!
@gcd134 I think Fields developed such a friendship with Drew Carey in three seasons that Carey took a shot at Executive Producer Mike Richards after Fields was fired by having him do Improv-a-Ganza. A contestant interviewed Fields, and noted how the two Clevelanders connected too well.
Gene Wood was great! He belongs on the same pedestal as Johnny Olson and Rod Roddy. But Rich Fields IMO is horrible. I cant wait to buy a new CAAAAAAAAAAAR. Or to COME ON DAAAAAAAAAAN. Ugh. I'm sure I'm not alone here!
@bms1117I heard that Bob Barker specifically placed Fields in the position. I will happily tell you that if it's true, that was one of the veeeeeeery few things Bob did on the show that I can't frickin' stand! Rich Fields is absolutely TERRIBLE.
I would have been a better announcer! The only problem I'd have is that my voice is too deep. Gene Wood's was too deep, but that rich quality and the tones of his voice compensated; he would have been a great new announcer.
Bob recently recited that refrigerator remark on "The Price is RAW." As for Gene, I remember his run as interim announcer, he had the voice for the show, and he had pretty good chemistry with both Tom Kennedy and Bob. But Rod was great.
@johnissoevil Bob used to say that on like every tv show interview with an audience....and he alwwwwways would say the same thing on each show or speech he gave LOL you could almost memorize it...HAHAHA
what does this announcer guy look like I wanna know about his look to match the voice... !!) I have seen what Rod, Rich and Mr Olson** (** Johnny Olson) look like. Gene was a good announcer to RIP Rod, Johnny and Gene!!
Gene has appeared on the shows he announced for years, as he was featured prominently on "Family Feud" with Richard Dawson and "Super Password" with Bert Convy. He was also a guest panelist on "Match Game" in 1974.
I like Rich Fields alot and I think Johnny, Rod and Gene would be very proud of him. I think Rich got pointers from the late great Johnny Olson because I read on a Rich Fields fan page Johnny let Rich say "Come On Down" at a taping years ago.
If he did, Johnny would be disappointed, as even though Rich Fields is a nice guy, his announcing don't hold a candle to either Rod or Johnny. His voice bugs the hell out of me, especially when he goes nuts for "A NEW CAAARRR!" Ugh!
Let me guess - are you from goldenroad, net? I know three people who were fired by Barker on "TPIR", and I don't appreciate you threatening me - I said that Rich was a nice guy - I just don't think that his announcing style holds a candle to Johnny O and Rod Roddy, and I have the right to my stated opinion. Besides, I didn't call Rich a name, as you did to me - you don't threaten me with your words - if you are one of 'Barker's boys', I really do feel sorry for you!
"The Price is Right" had some of the best announcers ever over the 53 years since it debuted on NBC in 1956. In addition to the late Johnny Olsen and Rod Roddy as the first two regular announcers on the
current series, two of the orgiinal announcers are still at work today: Don Pardo (NBC) and Johnny Gilbert (ABC). Sadly, classy regular substitute announcer and substitute host (for Bill Cullen's vacations; the show was braodcast live) Jack Clark is also no longer with us.
@cartoongameshowfan76 You know, I was born in 1983, and I never heard Johnny Olson announce an episode of TPIR until I saw the movie "Flight of the Navigator".
This was only a few months after both the daytime (ABC) and syndicated versions of Dawson's Family Feud ended their long runs. I'll bet Richard was just as saddened by Olson's passing as he was on his final FF, after what they've been through on Match Game.
I mis-worded my comment. The pitch in his voice sounded different on CBS than it did on NBC and ABC. If you compare his pitch here to, say, Password Plus, Dawson Feud, or some other non-CBS GT show, you'd hear a tiny difference.
Honestly, I liked Gene's announcing on TPIR. Even though I wasn't too old then, around 3, hearing his voice brings back memories. I vaguely remember him before Rod Roddy, and unfortunately I don't remember the big Johnny Olson at all. But if they'dve given him the chance I think he'd have done very well.
No. Anyways, when Gene was doing announcing duties on TPIR, and I'm for, a few others, he was actually slow in delivering the phrase, "Come on Down," when he was perfect for IUFB and the showcase. Being an announcer on TPIR is a very difficult job. It takes a lot of guts, fast-paced delivery with the phrase --- after each contestant has been called, a lot of warmups and even slapstick humor. Although I loved Gene, and that he did his best, but his best on this G-T show, was not enough!!
Interesting...he was a perfect fit for the IUFB, but he just didn't have the right voice to pull off the all-important raucous open. You could tell he was reaching down deep for all his enthusiasm, but it just didn't fit.
I really think they went with Rod because of his enthusiasm and he was a great choice, especially since PYL was about done when Rod took over TPIR.
Gene was a solid announcer, but think of all the other shows he was used in, Card Sharks, FF(first thre versions), Super Password. After Johnny died, Gene teally became the busiest game show announcer, like Johnny had been.
What, Gene didn't have enough enthusiasm? I mean, look at his resume..mostly Goodson-Todman, how could you not have an enthusiastic like that one for TPIR?
Gene Wood was a possibility after Johnny Olsen's death but they went with Rod Roddy as the 2nd permanent announcer. Gene is a great announcer for alot of other wonderful game shows.
Gene was a great announcer (my favorite announcer btw) but his voice just doesn't fit in with TPIR. FYI, I think Randy West has the potential to be the next Johnny Olsen but he just hasn't been given a really good oppurtunity yet.
This was tough for Gene Wood. He was a softer voice, compared to the booming Johnny Olsen. It came at a time when the great Johnny Olsen had passed away and a number of announcers were being rotated.
A personal note: In Wood's first shows with TPIR, some of the contestants could not hear Gene call out their name through the noise.
Now, when the name is announced, the stage manager flashes a card with the name so the contestant could come on down.
It was also weird that Johnny O seemed out of place for MG-HS, despite him being the announced of Match Game in the 70s. Gene seemed out of place (as we see here) in Johnny O's shows, and vice versa.
Heck, it wasn't just Johnny O that was seemingly out of place on MG-HS; Gene Rayburn even felt it a trainwreck to be on the show! Of course, a lot of that was said to have been due to his dislike of Jon Bauman, his co-host...why couldn't they have gotten Peter Marshall to have done the HS portion? That would've been "dope!" ;-)
