  • awesome awesome awesome, I'm currently negotiating buying one exactly the same :),

just to do that with, put in a stand and make sweeeeeeeeet noise !!

  • @MattytheDem, I Could Imagine This Under The Hood Of My GEO METRO!! And Outrunning The CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL At 500 MPH!! WOOOH! HOOOOH!

  • When you sit and think about what's actually going on inside that hunk of cast iron, it's AMAZING it all actually works.

Each connecting rod is under TONS of force. I'm not sure for a 12v149, but a 353 can flow ~400CFM of air... 400 * 4 = ~1600CFM of air that this thing EATS and turns into ~1600HP!!!

Incredible - and AMERICAN MADE. 'Nuff said.

  • Holy S*** !!

  • could envision this thing on a boat

  • wtf?!

  • thumbs up if ur from saskatoon and whatched this

  • What year is it

  • This one sounds like it has a rev limiter on it.

  • Awesome sound!!!! ...but please, don't rev it cold (unless it was preheated before this)

  • Awesome sound!!!!

  • nice

  • thts one awesome friggin motor!!!

  • It really burns clean!

  • sound is not a much.Scania diesels its much better

  • @TheBlazen001 Except for the fact that Detroits have way better oiling systems, cooling systems, horsepower, torque, throttle response, reliability, longevity, serviceability, and fuel effeciency.

But yeah, Scanias are soooooo much better..... LOL! xD

You have no idea what you're talking about!

  • Are the blowers those square boxes downstream the turbos? doesn't this arrengement produce a lot of drag? thanks

  • Hey kids thats Fred Flintstone

  • I can't believe this. This is incredible. 12v149. 12cyls x 149ci = 1788CID. That's UNREAL! Think the Japs could make something like this? HA! Nooooo way! =)

  • I want at my house when the power goes out. Piss off all the neighbors

  • Nice go kart engine. I see some potential...

  • Did this engine have any purpose? lol

  • Was this filmed at Stewart Stevinson in Denver? It looks like it.

  • @JGMagoo This was filmed @ the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology "Heavy Equipment & Truck & Transport" building in Saskatoon, SK!

  • @cheuler Is this engine a marine application?

  • @joedrummer2010 No, this one came from a rock truck. I could totally picture bolting this baby into a Vietnam era river patrol boat, though! They came with a couple of 6V-53 Detroits, which had a governor breakaway to allow them to overspeed in an emergency. The 12V-149 would make a nice power upgrade!

  • @cheuler Did you know the 12v149s are flex fuel engines? They can run on diesel, but you can also feed them Honda Civics!!!!! xD

  • @cheuler The 149's are used in boats a lot. The Coast Guard used 82 foot patrol boats in Vietnam with 7- 50 caliber machine guns on each one. I was an engineer in the best merchant marine union in the world and we would pull pistons with cranes on the biggest diesel engines in the world. Six story tall 2-stroke in-line 12 cylinder engines. The turbochargers are as big as that 149.

  • There is a couple of v24 detroits on here, but i dont know the story behind them.

  • I can just see those go cart air filters getting sucked into the turbo.

  • I love that guys face everytime he throttles this beast up!

  • This is a 12V149, they also come as an 8V, a 16V, and a 20V.

The blocks come as V6's and V8's.

    But they don't build a 6V.

The 8V149s use one V8 block, the 12V149s use two V6 blocks bolted together and cams with couplers.

The 16V149s use two V8 blocks, and the 20V149 uses two V6 blocks bolted on the ends of a V8 block.

The turbos and blowers and camshafts all get bolted on and coupled up in the appropriate amounts.

The top horsepower ratings are 125HP per cylinder.

  • @TheUberGopher Whats a V24 then? 3 V8's or 4 V6's?

  • @scribklu DD never actually produced a 24V. There is one here on YouTube that has been made-up using two 12V-71's linked together end to end with separate blocks and crankshafts. The 12V uses it's own 1-piece block and crankshaft, and two 6-71 heads and two 6V-71 blowers.

  • @JGMagoo It was built by Detroit. Or at least the sticker on the rocker cover said it was.

  • Is the 149 put together like the smaller 2 cycles? i want a 6v149 to but into a truck

  • @WARD5KUSTOMZ

    A 12V149 weighs more than 10,000 pounds.

The smallest 149 is an 8V

  • @TheUberGopher the small water truck at work is packin an 8v149, but i can't find any other vids on here of an 8v149 besides the vid of the walk around i did on that truck

  • what would a motor like that be used for practically? and i bet it chugs the diesel!

  • @volFD59

Lot's of them are used in mining trucks.

    The Euclid R100's I worked on used a 1000hp 12V149 and a 6 speed Allison automatic.

They are quite common in the oil field for frac pumps.

We used to start them in the cold by pulling a plug on the aircleaner pipes and emptying a full can of starting fluid into each bank, then hit the air starter and use up another full can in each bank to get them going.

It made me nervous the first time!

  • @TheUberGopher cool. thanks.

  • @TheUberGopher I'm surprised that you didn't blow the heads off of the motor doing that. I know that 8V71s can be a little cantankerous in the morning but 3 cans of starting fluid into a V12 sounds excessive.

  • 4 turbos, 2 superchargers, 1788 cubic inches. LOL i love it. looks like somethin on a frac pumper. absolutely beautiful

  • awesome, anybody see the peterbuilt in dieselpower mag?

  • Oudisajerk, shut up and and enjoy the show! Some arrogant moron always has to reveal his insecurities by trying to upstage the host. Good video by the way. I'm curious if that is the engine the Williams brothers have in their 747 "Big Bud"

  • @ftlbrt I believe that "Big Bud" uses a 16V-92 engine, which is outrageous in it's own right... Detroit Diesel did manufacture a 16V-149, although it would be awfully large for a mobile unit like a tractor. And by awfully large, I mean wonderfully large! I may just need to post another video of this engine soon...

  • @cheuler you see these in enormous rock trucks or mining trucks

  • No clag?

  • what on earth does the 12v149 used for? The 12V71 is the largest semi engine detroit ever made and its also used in some locomotives and huge boats a 149 is just nuts!

  • got that same engine in my pinto

  • u just have it there for looks...gay!

  • @bubbleboyE40 This is at the Heavy Equipment and Truck + Transport Mechanic program building in Saskatoon, Canada. It's a school, and we use it for our studies. It's pretty cool.

  • @777shaitan666 o.. mybad i thought is was just in a shop for now reason i was about to say??

  • Ill take one with nitrous for my camaro please !

  • and THAT is why i think priuses are gay

  • sweeet :)

  • 149 ci per cylinder lol

  • now thats what i want in my truck!

  • At work on a saturday no boss around

  • how do i stuff that under the hood of my Ranger?

  • DAMN! Put that sum bitch in a PETERBILT 359! (all though it is highly impossible)

  • @MrAwesomeSkittles Never downshift for a hill again that would be for sure but i got a feeling that jacobs doesn't have a brake for that engine

  • Big Block???? lol This a MEGA BLOCK!!!!

  • @NibiruGroup Isn't it, though???

  • @NibiruGroup and yet it still revs faster then a bigblock ;)

  • seams like tiny turbo's for such a huge engine

  • whats it got for torquw

  • wow that is one big super engine.

  • How Much I want to make the guy with a dodge Cummins next door My bitch!

  • LOL! thats a 29L engine!

  • Love the pipes

  • The throttle man has a big pie eating grin...hell so would I ...THAT's a diesel engine

  • @cheuler So it IS a SuperTurbo! Awesome! Only heard about that on obscure Nissans, Volkswagens, and Lancias...and some other high-performance setups.

  • Is that big ol' belt for a Blower? I see it has turbos...

  • @JimPrower Those BELTS have NOTHING to do with the GEAR DRIVEN blower you moron!

  • @fast96z28 Troll. frenchelectrician wasn't trying to get a rise out of me, and neither should you. You fail.

  • HOLY SHNIKES!

    Hit governor in no time!

Sounds amazing thru my sub o_0

  • yeah that'd be a good enough motor to drive my twin elephant rotisserie oven - how much you want for it?

  • I think that one elephant steak ought to cover it!

  • Good way to ruin four turbo chargers in one go.....

Alway's idle the engine for a bit as the turbo will still be spooling down and if the oil supply stops you will cause bearing damage.

  • Yes, I know all about hot shutdown. However, with the engine only running for approximately 20 seconds with no load, coking of the bearings really isn't an issue.

  • Being cold has nothing to do with it. Turbo's need oil pressure as they have "floating bearings". Without it you get metal to metal friction that causes damage. It may not do imediatly noticable damage but that doesn't mean it's not contributing to it's early demise. Any Turbo specialist you have out there will tell you the same as I was told....

  • Well, I used to build turbos for a living, and I can tell you that the only way that the turbo will spin quickly enough to cause bearing damage is by putting the engine under load. On an unloaded engine, such as in the video, the turbine and impeller assembly are not spinning quickly, as no boost is being produced! However, the point of my post was not to start arguments or disputes with anyone. How about if we agree to disagree?

  • @cheuler It didn't even run long enough to get oil TO the turbos initially.

  • @3Mudbone1 The engine was running for about 10 minutes just prior to the start of the video. It was only shut down for a few seconds prior to filming, so the turbos weren't starved for oil. Additionally, with no load on the engine, no boost is being produced

  • them airfilters look a bit small for it!

  • now throw some pumpkin size turbos on there along with some injectors that crickets could crawl through & you got you somthin!!

  • bakker, ez nagyon durvulós :)

  • beautiful sound!!!!!

  • yup 149 cuin per cylinder, no droppin that into your F-350

  • Fuckin BEAST

  • I believe that this engine was originally used in a mining truck. However, I'm not 100% certain!

  • I WANT THOSE STACKS ON MY TRUCK!!!!! lmao!

  • I still see then now and again out in the oilfield. Used in a frac pump.

  • this detroit is pure badassery.....i want to put it in my pick up, with some mods to the truck ofcourse

  • Slightly heavier front springs could help.

  • lol imagine this in a heavy-duty transport truck

  • Pure greatness!!! I cant say enough good stuff about Detroit Diesel engines!! Built so well and sound god like!

This vid definitely made my fav. list! Long live the 2-stroke screamers!!!

  • What will you do with this beast of a Jimmy?

  • Angry little thing.

  • Yes, it is, isn't it?

  • yeah lol

  • No ear protection? You're one crazy man.

  • put one in a school bus

  • @Slooter3s

    hahaha

  • You could mount it in the back, and stick the stacks out the roof!

God only knows what transmission you'ld put behind it!

  • A fairly big one I expect!

  • Like No Shit!!!!!

  • Nice

  • Damn I want one!

  • That would make a killer cigarette bus. It needs FAR larger air filters though!

  • Comment removed

  • That's a bad ass Detroit right there!!

  • yoo u gotta get more longer video of this thats sick what did it come out of?

  • This engine originally came out of a 16 ton coal mine truck.
