  • Where i live in scotland, i can walk out my front door and WALK east, west, north or south and will be at a war memorial within 10 minutes .

  • This isn't just for WWI. It's for all wars. My grandfather served in the Vietnam war and he's dead now. I cried when I heard this, it reminded me of him so much. :'(

  • See War Horse (preferably the play) or read the book for a brilliant and moving treatise on the horror and futility of this particular war.

  • I love this <3

  • I remember a documentary on that bloke who played Doctor Who.His Scottish grandfather was so poor that he joined up because he was promised a pair of boots! And yet some people want to depict all the soldiers as fighting for the British King George who changed the name of the British royal family from the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to

the house of Windsor. They were German! Mind blowing hypocrisy!

  • @sitric100

You're right. ;) The House of Windsor is with german blood.

But the most Brits don't know it.

  • This song displays a question: What was all the fightining for? Although this may sound odd, but as a German I'm also asking this question to myself. My great-grandfathers both fought in WW1. I never got to know them, but I'm still asking what they fought for. This war was the most senseless event in the whole century.

A happy new year to all of you.

  • Actually, the whole point of the song is to show how a young Irish teenager went off to fight for his country, and yet thousands of Irish soldiers, including him, were forgotten when the 1916 Rising broke out. Irish men swallowed their pride and fought FOR Britain despite also seeking independence. They gave up their lives for the greater good.

  • Willie Mcbride was an Irish man who gave his life for peace , and in return his country was disgraced by British lies , Tiocfaidh ar lá

  • I wonder if we can achieve world peace by 2018?

  • @RobinofWrexham naaa we're all gunna die in 2012 21st of December. it's god's way of saying, "Fck you all, im done with this."

  • Great way to respect those who have fought for our country

R.I.P all those who have lost their lives through war

  • Thank you for posting this. R.I.P to all those who died, not only in WW1 and WW2 but to the ones that are fighting out there now. I'm proud to be British.

  • well done megan

  • Good job thanks for posting :)

  • Will war ever end?

  • Addressing some of the comments about the "Great" War. Truly a human tragedy, but not in vain. This war shaped modern day Europe, had a profound impact on the World and laid the foundations for WWII; another unspeakable tragedy. The sheer numbers of casualties is unfathomable. Was it all in vain? No. As long as we remember the sacrifice, honour the dead and respect the lessons from history such a catastrophe is less likely to recur. To ignore the past is to risk repeating it. Lest we forget

  • Sobering. A poignant presentation. Very well done! ~Anna

  • Beautiful Thankyou

  • It's hard to believe some where that looks so peaceful once held some of the bloodiest battles mankind has ever known R.I.P. to lost souls who died fighting for there county what ever there nationality great video you would definitely got an A from me

  • I find this song lovely.

    I find it also sad

I aim this remark not the next war, the brave men, women and children who give their lifes. would they have done so to know how our world had turned out in the 2000s, greed of corperations, mega taxes of it peoples, the blind eye turned to the hungey, the murder for oil and resorces.

said to think these men died for what they thought was going to be the war to end all wars. it only opened a new door to evil

    R.I.P. all who passed

  • @rentboy001 i'd say they had their lives stolen, they didnt give them to a real cause...poor souls

  • Beautiful Song, I do not agree with the Drop Kick Murphys politically but I do like there music .

  • THANKYOU FOR THIS X

  • WW1 was possibly the most pointless war in history. It was a imperialist war and people on all sides were used as cannon fodder whether they where Scottish, Irish, English or whatever. Half a generation of Newfoundlander's were killed in the battle of Beaumont Hamel on the first day of the battle of Somme. We were used as cannon fodder just like everyone else. RIP to all the soldiers who were killed in that godforsaken war.

  • @hydromorphineIV there was a 'pointful' war?

  • @hydromorphineIV

If WW 1 was a stupid war, then WW II would be even worse. After all, it was basically WW I pt. 2

  • @Runnerofwood1

Finaly the WWI ending at 1945!!!

  • @Salubesame on the 11th of the 11thj at 11... does anyone think that that isn't true? i dunno but it's just been 11th of the 11th at 11 O'clock 2011! 3 mins ... some people(curse them) don't even bother with the silence!!!! grrrr

  • @JMemski

Some people have suffered hugely at the hands of the armed forces who this silence is designed to commemerate. Personally I wouldnt disrepect a moment's silence, those poor bastards who got got slaughtered in WW1 deserve a bit of respcect, but you you have to realise there are those of us for whom British casualties are tied in with the attempt to subdue our country to British rule. One million dead in the Famine, one million forced to emigrate in the following decades

  • , the continued mutilation of our country. I think we (Ireland) actually show remarkable maturaty in relation to this kind of thing despite the deep and hurtful wounds that are felt in Ireland to this very day.

A ridiculous war fought for the "right of small nations" but was just a European Imperial project, hence the millions sacrificied for a few metres in France. God Bless all Irish, Englsih, Scottish, Welsh, French, German, Russian, Italian, American and others who died in vain

  • @thewalls111 yeah... i looked up biggest WW1 grave yard and it made me cry how many there were that died for no reason other than... oh u shot some one whos important... WAR!!!! ??? I honestly wish i wasn't human some times... dogs don't kill each other and nor do penguins... or alot of animals, but we do ... FOR OIL AT THE MOMENT grrr it annoys me...

  • @hydromorphineIV

I've been to the field where the Newfoundlander's took those terrible casualties on the first day and I can safely say it was the most humbling and moving experience of my life. However the war was not pointless. For these young men like Willie McBride the war meant saving civilisation - the war was not pointless however the sacrifices of the young men were futile. If you are a Newfoundlander - thank you for the sacrifices your ancestors made.

  • @hydromorphineIV

    Im Irish, well said

  • In memory of all those who died like me

R.I.P Willie McBride and your fellow volunteers

    3rd Belfast Battalion

    C. Company

    Carluke, Scotland

    For God And ULSTER

    NO (Fuckin) SURRENDER

  • Omg that accent is painful!! Amazing song though RIP to ALL fallen soldiers

  • @TheIrishgrlrocks to all of them don't care about sides many. men died over there. respect to all who fought in a war

  • it's against every war... and some people still fighting now just here in this discussion...!!! stupid human beens...

  • for those that are died for nothing change... just the money in the bag of the capitalist, banks and rich monarchies... god kill the kings and save the people...!

  • @lukaquin No it is not about Irish soldiers. There is no reference to Ireland at all. Considering the songwriter was SCOTTISH, it is more than likely about a Scot. And we haven't gone on and on and on about it.

  • @TDAForbes wrong wrong wrong its about all fallen soldiers in ww1 .. actually in every war .

  • @TDAForbes "it is more than likely about a Scot" I think it is about the fallen in general. A fellow Scot of Bogle's called Hamish Imlach said that he remembered Bogle writing the song in a hotel in Germany some time after they'd visited the graves in France. McBride was a name that had indiscriminately stuck in his mind - probably because of the rhyme. He probably just made up the detail of the person to rhyme and scan and possibly didn't know or care where the person called McBride came from

  • No offense, but this song just plain doesn't work when sung with an American accent.

It needs a true Scottish or Irish accent to give it the proper emotional kick.

  • And the countless white crosses in mute witness stand.

To man's blind indifference to his fellow man

  • the war to end all wars? still no peace on my land when british soldiers patrol the streets of free eire, im from galway but i treat everyone one on my island the same, irish!! i think its time we got our 6 counties back so the younger generation can see what proper peace is. you gotta remember we are all going to more big worries in the future the way things are looking... by the way check out . intinn-come away . they are pretty cool band from galway ireland

  • All the guys who only think of the Entente forces, United States soldiers and so on didn't understand the message of the song. It's for ALL who fell in that war. This also includes their opponents: Germans, Austrians etc. ALL were cheated and driven into the fire of hell, produced by mankind. If you stand on one side and just damn the other, you are a perfect victim for new warmongering... War doesn't make heroes, it only makes dead people, whoever they are. Peace!

  • God bless.

  • Once I read somewhere that if the fallen French soldiers of WO I would march on the Champs Elysées they would march for 5 days and nights (in rows of 4). That is the strength of this song: it shows that there is a human face and story behind these statistics.

  • I'm just back from Belgium to see the battlefields, I love this song and it really makes you think.

  • brill wee song, really makes u think

  • thinking of my own nefew and thinking of family that have served in the army and i will only ever pray to my grandfather only him will i ask to help and plea hope for a peacful future for my nefew

  • Rest in peace and may you not always be parted from those you love... like in the song Loch Lomond, "But me and my true love will yet meet again, far above the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond" -unknown highlander

  • ANZAC day 2011

    Lest we forget

  • Mr. Bowdrens class is gay... as in they enjoy having consectual sex with other men.

  • Hey great vid mate, Just curious where did you find the song, anzac day is coming up, and i want to make my first youtube video, SO why not make it about ANZAC day, an i think this song would be perfect for the video.

  • :):):)

  • Remembered in the past

    Reminded in the present

    Known throughout the future

Though your bodies may be gone

    Your memory lives on

Rest in peace men of war

Whether known only unto God or named.

  • moves me everytime...

  • A great touching song.

Best regards from the finally peacefull germany. It were millions of young men of all nations that died for a peacefull future were i live in now. This will never be forgotten,

    especially in germany.

  • Brilliant, but sad song :( R.I.P Fallen Heroes <3

  • @RyanandJackpro1 did you even listen to the lyrics. This is not a song tp praise heroes but to denounce war. War never produces heroes only people who get killed or become killers....

  • I lost four relatives in WW1 but both grandfathers came through for one to be killed by Hitlers bombs. My old dad fought in Korea and Malaya and my brother (older) served in N Ireland. my younger bro was in Kosovo.

  • Every time an army dies they should play this song at their funeral.

  • THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL VERSION OF HOW ALL OF THESE FINE AND THE BEST OF THE OF THE NATIONS YOUNG MEN GAVE THEIR LIVES!!!WHY?

We are led to beleive that this would be the end of all wars,it has failed us,my father died in the BURMES crisis in the second world war.

There will always be wars as long as we are run by GREED,look at the turmoil in the middle east today, corruption is rife especially in our country,if i had been much younger i would get myself involved, just like the YARROW MARCH.

  • @aaron2k85 That's a myth - the composer is Eric Bogle (an Australian, born in Scotland). Bogle himself says their is no "Willie MacBride" that fits the description in any war grave in France. Willie is Everyman in uniform: the Unknown Soldier.

It's a shame that so many find the need to perpetuate old grievances and re-right almost forgotten battles - but if you must, could you do the Lost and the Dead the honour of not using this particular song as the bone in your squabbles?

  • i love this song it is asong in my heart

  • @MiniGil1992 LOL WW1 was fought for freedom. The whole point of this song is that this war like nearly every other was totally pointless and based on lies. It was nothing other than another empirelist war to make the rich richer and the poor in thier place.

  • Yes, they beat the drum slowly, they played the pipes lowly, And the rifles fired o'er me as they lowered me down, The band played "The Last Post" in chorus, And the pipes played "The Flowers of the Forest."

  • Ask the people of Belgium or Alsace-Lorraine,

If my life was wasted, if I died in vain.

I think they will tell you when all's said and done,

They welcomed this boy with his tin hat and gun.

And call it ironic that I was cut down,

While in Dublin my kinfolk were fighting the Crown.

But in Dublin or Flanders the cause was the same:

To resist the oppressor, whatever his name.

  • Yes, they beat the drum slowly, they played the pipes lowly, And the rifles fired o'er me as they lowered me down, The band played "The Last Post" in chorus, And the pipes played "The Flowers of the Forest."

  • My dear friend Eric, this is Willie McBride,

Today I speak to you across the divide,

Of years and of distance of life and of death,

Please let me speak freely with my silent breath.

You might think me crazy, you might think me daft,

I could have stayed back in Erin, where there wasn't a draft,

But my parents they raised me to tell right from wrong,

So today I shall answer what you asked in your song.

  • Is it no' time for us all to be nice to one another? Bet we all basically agree in the same things or we wouldn't like the music we are all listening to! Most of this is just to some point sophistry. Come tae Scotland an' I'll buy ye all a wee whisky! Works for me every time!

  • @BaconTV123 agree absolutely. good on u guys. u had many heroes too.

  • @FrankKane51 well good for u. were u on the side of wallace?

  • @peterloo1819

"How patronising, when I read nonsense like this it really irritates the hell out of me"

    Yet it remains true.

Voicing your anti conflict opposition is ok, but yet have you noticed the pacifists remain here, while things get bloody ugly thousands of miles away ?

When did a pacifist outcry help to solve a conflict ? Never.

And you said I should grow up ? Maybe. But I'm not the one who should get real.

  • @Briselance Sorry to diabuse but I have been working in Cambodia and Laos over the last ten years on a variety of projects, so not really sitting placidly at home watching conflicts from afar. I'll be returning there in a few months time to Krati to assist in the rehabilitation and retraining of those men, women and children who unfortunately came into contact with landmines and now lack a few limbs. Sounds pretty real to me. Apologies for the ''grow up' jibe, it was unnecessary

  • @peterloo1819

"Apologies for the ''grow up' jibe, it was unnecessary"

You don't have to excuse for anything.

    I should have apologised.

Looking back at it, I think I have sounded a bit too harsh or rude. Sorry for that.

  • Thanks very much mistreena for this emotive and sensitive video set to a truly wonderful song. Nothing but praise for this. I was in England in 1991 on the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and a Tommy was asked what he thought and he said "we were lions led by donkeys" brought tears to my eyes. O, pardon me, thou bleeding piece of earth, That I am meek and gentle with these butchers! Goddamn the ruling classes, both then and now.

  • 11th of november ... it was 92 years before, but the tears shed for the fallen remains the same ...

  • rip to all killed...............these are men who deserve so so so much

  • very very good song!! But the german version from hannes wader or eric fish are very good too!! I Love Anti war songs!! : D

  • Tennessee flag :51 !!!!!!!

  • @Mistreena thats where we got the name strom troopers

  • @FrankKane51 I put a wee personal one on your site, Mistreena, but you are right, it is a sore song to sing. I find it hard to get all the way thru' at times. Not that I can do it as well as those quoted! LOL

  • @aaron2k857 I just meant that I made this video for that purpose, and what the song means to me, not what the song was originally made to mean. And, then again, how can anyone really know what a writer is thinking about when they write? I study literature, and you can never say "Shakespeare meant this..." No, we don't know what he meant, only what we can interpret from it. ^^

  • @Mistreena although it was nade for the irish of flanders field... what you said is so true you will never know...what it meant to the writer... CHEERS

  • Honestly, how could 10 people dislike this song?, it's truely amazing!

  • wat a good song

  • WWI was a bitter experience for all. As for the Irish they put off their Independence War to support "the democracies" against "the Bosch" because the germans behaved so badly in Belgium, which was neutral and yet invaded. It turned out that military decisions by the British were determined by incompetents who played cards with the King. That's the way that the rot of the British aristocracy/oligarchy worked. Whole villages in Ulster lost their men, the widows and children left destitute.

  • All i know is it has happened again again again and again no one learnt from this horror

  • dziękujemy Wam Pozostaniecie w naszej pamięci

  • i love this vid

  • This shouts of the British brotherhood. Nice version but The Fureys are the winners when it comes to this tune. God bless you Americans for embracing this tune but this means a lot to us warring British and Irish folk. More than you might realise

  • love this song

    R.i.p all the soilders

  • @isaacesturt it dunt matter where its from it is just a song about the pointless loss of life think about the message it carries in the lyrics its anout all those men who died and where forgotten about

  • I think you did a great job on this video. Dropkick Murphys did a great job on this song. I'd have given you an A+++

  • Can you tell me who sings this please...

    p.s- this is beautiful!

  • Speaking as someone who has seen it ALL.... I always tear up uncontrollably when he gets to the "in some loyal heart is your memory enshrined" bit.

  • wow, m8.. great work. Love the song, it´s absolutely fuckin´ awesome.

    "War? Never again!"

´s shame that this isn´t the reality..

    greets from hamburg/ger

  • I never really paid attention to the wars until I visited the battlefields. Now I will never forget the sacrifice. RIP

  • My father was a WWI veteran. He never talked about it so I don't know where he served. He was wounded, with mustard gas. I still have his discharge certificate from 1918, the year before he married my mother. This song makes me cry too.

  • @camerabugs Sorry to hear about your dad.

  • @camerabugs My regards to your father.

  • Great clip!

  • And of course I am bawling my eyes out.

  • @Mistreena absolutely. Hence the words 'it happened again, and again and again'

  • A Brave Young Soldier

    R.I.P

    Least We Forgot

    Honour The Dead

  • artsychic2000 It's not as easy as that if it were it would have been done long ago. Look at the Jews many refused to fight and very few ever join the military because they don't believe in war, for the most part. And that's why many were killed off so easiely during WWII.

  • why should another soul die for the elitists battle for world government? Why?

If the men would lay down their arms and refuse to fight the elitists would be powerless.

  • @artsychic2000 That is the elitists' greatest fear.

  • Rest In Peace, Willy McBride.

  • excellent video, well done year 12 student. One of my favourite songs

    Cinder

  • watched this in history n loved it da lyrics are well gd x

  • to a whole generation that was butchered and d amned,,rest thier souls,,

  • R.I.P to all soliders tht died ;( xx

  • that war should have taught the world that war is not the answer,i lost a great uncle from the royal inniskilling fusiliers on his 1st day of war,he died of his wounds later in hospital.many a brave man fell in 1916,they believed they would make their country better.

  • the dropkick murphy's are awesome, at first i couldnt believe they sang this cuz most of their songs are loud, very loud if you no what i mean

  • I love this song.. lest we forget r.i.p :[ x

  • well done this is excellant, not the death but the video and music

  • DROPKICK MURPHY'S? is that who sings this one..well this version is the best!

  • god rest them all,

  • it is a little ironic that they said that this war would end all wars, but the end of this war was the reason to start the biggest conflict in human history.

but great song and great vid!

  • @henkjanjaap @henkjanjaap Don't you know that logic doesn't apply to politics, Silly?

  • Written by a Scot that lives in Australia about an Irish soldier that died in France. There is also the duet that is half in German, seems quite international to me. It's not polite to call someone a 'thick fuks'.

  • rip to all killed

  • DROPKICK MURPHY'S!

  • yes it is

  • this 1 is better

  • i have goosebumps up my neck now

    makes me cry

  • That's a great video, moving.

  • the song has been done great ...just because you dont like a few words and some drums .. dont make it bad at all ...

ya gotta go some to make it better than this

  • This song has no political meaning. The part where they say he died in vane doesn't mean the war was pointless it more means that people at that time thought once that war was over than there would never be another. He's saying that that soldier probably thought the same thing, and he died in vane if you put it in that light, right?

  • greatest version of the song i've ever heard

  • This is one of the best renditions of this song that I've heard...no matter what anyone else may say. Well done in both picking the voice and the pictures as aside from one picture they all went perfectly. This is the most moving representation I have seen. Thank you.

  • It was in vane, and soon they will do it again! NWO coming in!

  • you guys, it's almost D-day +65!!!1!!!1!!!!

  • i love the song,

    it's just beautiful

but the man doesn't sing it very good...

but the song is so impressive!

  • I have the original eric bogle version just posted it,

I'll send it as a video response.

  • The song is by The Dropkick Murphy's

A pro IRA Bostonian Irish punk band.

  • *a pro republican punk band

    there is a huge difference

  • yea?? but the scots and irish are cousins haha

  • hah very true but still the original version is so hard to find and it is very good. if you find it pass it on.

  • This song isn't parochial...not meant for one country or the other, but very catholic in the sense that it's universal...paying tribute and honor to ALL men of ALL countries, who have been caught up in these meaningless, butchering wars, that deprive each country of the finest of their generation. They are either killed, wounded or affected psychologically. This song speaks to each man, no matter which colors he wore. Can we not all just reflect and respect and listen to the words. Maybe....

  • theres almost no diffrens in wars trough ages they all end with peoples getting killed and doing nothing but making hate and sorrow...

  • I am aware what about this song is. In German wie have a song called "Es ist an der Zeit" with Hannes Wader. It is almost a translation of this scotish song? Believe it is about World War 1, as there is mentioned the year 1916.

  • this song was just the most saddest song ever

  • but, one from the most beautyfull song's.

  • this and have you ever heard "and the band played walzing mathilda"? ...that one is from the veiw of a survivor.

  • Also, 2:55 and 3:00....

Hell the whole song. It's sad, but great. A great thing to do. (Even though it's a cover). It's a great thing to go to the gravesites of these great men. It's an honor to be there. Even if you don't know them. Just to see their name and respect what they've done. I've done it a few times. I cry almost every time..

  • From about 1:20 to about 1:55 is so sad. I don't know why.

  • hate the video love the song

  • dis song is 4 a young man that lost his life so all you people that wana b immature dnt bother commenting on dis song coz ur opinion is worth fuck all

  • touching song!

  • remember our fallen of the ulster division

    God Save The Queen

    FGAU U.V.F

  • The unity of the old empire and modern commonwealth have been demonstrated twice in the two great conflicts of the 20th Century. The gratitude and respect of the sacrifice of the "Empire" will never be forgotten. In Newhaven, I have seen the memorial to the Canadians lost at Dieppe, and I have seen the beaches. Politicians, please study history before commencing another conflict.

  • Oh willie McBride it all happened again, and again and again and again and again!

  • Why, if Willie MacBride died in 1916 do we have the Stars and stripes? the Americans where late again and only came to the War in 1917.

I know the Americans think the where the only ones, Willie MacBride was not Americam

  • Ok, but the author is from Canada =)

  • If you are referring to the author of the song, no, he wasn't Canadian. It was Eric Bogle, an Australian. He has another great song of the same theme... And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. It is hard to keep dry eyes when you hear THAT one!

  • Oh, no I actually was referring to the author of the video! And I agree about 'And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda'.

  • half m8 half im also half aus. i luv aus and england, but i also think that if u luk at one war and believe it is different to all war you are wrong all war involves friends loved ones and people been killed and losing people.

  • This was the First Great War. Never before had anything of this scale been seen by anyone, nor was it expected

  • i went to the national artoretum today staffordshire. it really gave this song meaning, i saw a name mcbride on the wall at the crucible. maybe a relation to willie mcbride. it really made it clear to me. we lose all these young men and women and yet people forget all of them had names, faces families. how can we be so quick to forget them well some are. i think ill remember those names till the day i die. it really puts it into prospective.

  • hate to tell you he was actually a corporal in the great war. the whole point is u can link what the lyrics say about all wars not just ww1. did you leave a wife or a sweet heart behind are you remembered in some loyal heart. all soldiers are people at the end of the day.

im not going to argue when we should be praising this video for its brilliant way of showwing us that war should be stopped and we should mourn all soldiers who fall.

  • nice vid but i hate this new viewer! i cant stop it to let it load or itll scrap what its loaded and be done when i push replay it scraps what its loaded and has to load it all again

  • aye ok loljlol

    not bad version i think

  • sorry i love this song and the words but i think it needs to be sang with more fealing

  • yes well this is to remember all soldiers who fell for all of time for freedom and 2. ww1 was because yes. we all want to be in charge of europe. man kind has tried to control each other through out time. plus if we want to remember something remember all those who died not just one wars dead but all war.

  • this song allways reminds me of the film saving private ryan

  • i love this song, its a beautiful tribute to those who fell for the cause of freedom. Freedom doesnt cost free. its paid in the lives of our brothers and sisters. the killing, the dying, the glory the shame, the killing and dying was it all done in vein. one day willie mcbride it shall result in the cause of no more wars.

  • They didn't fell for the cause of freedom. They fell for maintaining the continental balance. GB sent soldiers by reason of economic considerations.

  • Hail all the dead heroes of the world wars, you where sent to death by the mighty. May your names and sacrifice be remembered and let us make sure that Europe never see that blodshed again.
