Saw him in a small venue in Chicago in 77. One of the best live performances I have ever seen...absolutely captivated his audience and I have seen some of the best. His story telling was as good as his songs.

According to mgr. Arlo, Shawn had become the first non-South-African to be invited to perform in this huge musical event that folks such as I would never have heard of except for Shawn's involvement. I am ashamed that everybody in South Africa knows this SP classic beauty, yet hardly anyone around me even is aware of Shawn Phillips' existence, let alone talent and genius.
@j6460887 What? I LOVE it when he talks to the audience. To know him thru his music is fantastic, yes, but to know him even more when he's just being 'himself', is a blessing I am so hungry for. That's one of the great features - for me - of the concert DVDs, along with the many concert "clips" here on YT.
An excellent exmaple of who 'shawn is and if one pays close attention you can see his emotion plays out in both his vocal timing and how often times he attack the chord. He has lived this song.
@quickdraw33 What a yummy observation and comment.
Yes, he has deeply lived every one of his songs, and felt them so strongly that he absolutely had to develop all his skills so that he could properly present them to others aware enough to experience the rich emotion. That's why so few people even dare try to cover his songs.
And why we are truly blessed that he hooked up with the very genuine Arlo Hennings and revived his career, with the help of his "uber-fans" around planet Earth.
A very dear friend of mine turned me onto Shawn in 1971. I saw him twice and met him once when he played at my college. I always associate his more haunting, beautiful lyrics and music like this one because my friend died of an overdose not long after we saw him together my first time. His music speaks of bittersweet memories for me. he's the best.
I saw him 3 times in the early 70's. Twice at Trinity's Laurie Auditorium in San Antonio TX. The first time was just him and 8 guitars set in a ring around him. He was inspiring. I still think Second Contribution by far the best. God I miss the music from Texas.
@cryovacman My first time was when he opened for the Moody Blues at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, CA. Sadly, his brilliance was too soft for that venue filled with Moody Blues fans like myself, who sang every word of the Moodys' performance. The Moodys remain my favorite group, but even Justin Hayward can't top Shawn. Nobody can. Shawn is truly the best, although I have met very few people who realize that yet ... which makes me cry.
I have a website dedicated to Shawn Phillips and have gathered all of his vids or covers and put them into playlists, come join and be part of this growing fan based site for all of Shawns stuff.
I have seen him once and he did this song and several people began to clap during the pauses. I love how, in this performance, no one made the mistake of cheering or clapping during those really long pauses. You can tell the audience was all very familier with his work. Beautiful song
@jeddieb85 My 2nd Shawn Phillips concert - early 70s - I can't even remember the playlist ... he came on after a truly horrible group that had the house whooping and hollering, yet when Shawn came on he oh-so-quietly got everyone in the house into utter silence, listening ever-so-carefully to every note he produced. Pure genius performance, even for the many there who weren't familiar with his work ... but yes, I do remember the clapping during Shawn's pregnant pauses. Thanks for the smiles.
Shawn is once again touring and he is coming to Minnesota 2 times this year, FAR OUT!!!!! Once to the Mpls Guthrie Theater in May and the next time in July at St Cloud. Can't wait, what a fantastic talent.
I've seen Shawn a number of times, but the best by far was at the Opera House in Chicago with Peter Robinson and Paul Buckmaster. This had to be 1974 and he was at his most popular, what a talent.
he was introduced to me when i was 18 by Linda Zack ,the first and only love of my live, my first girl friend. it took place in 1977 in Israel. we used to sit in the sofa and listen to Second Contribution over and overagain.Linda got back to Montreal and i got back to Sao Paulo.Never heard from her again.Never let pass one single day without thinking of her and i am always listening to this and to other Shawn's albums so we can be together in Spirit. He's much beyond his time.where are you Linda?
