Oh my god, I can't control the urgency in my heart of uproarious love for this song, and this is the first time I hear it. ..I really need to see about All of Bessie's Musical collections. =) I love Bessie. =) This song is beautiful. And, too, is the tenacious Empress!
CAN ANYONE HELP ME IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A OLD COMPILATION OF OLD BLUES SONG BY WOMAN ...X RATED BLUES OR SOMTHING LIKE THAT IT HAD A SONG DADDY IF YOU CANT RIDE ME YOU CANT RIDE MY TRAIN...ALL OLD 20,S TO 40,S SONGS?
My music teacher forced us to listen to her music, but she can't bring music alive. She should have just let this play, we all would have been jumping at the chance to do jazz :) Bessie's amazing, RIP, peace forever. She took a lot of shit through her life - she deserves more public memory then she has.
@tinyyuki I know man, I feel you. All we have to listen to currently is faggot-ass rap and sluts like kesha and rehanna. I hope this kind of music becomes popular again.
she was a star from earlier than what that writing reas. she was well established in 1909 and possibly earlier than that. although they generally travelled from town to town and was scraping bye through prostitution. in 1929 she appeared in... a fim called st louis blues.
Her voice is so beautiful! This song is filled with so much emotion, emotion that can not be elaborated by words, but contemplated in your head. Eye feel it, and I want to live in the "lonely" chair singing this..Haha. Bessie Smith vocals are soothing and beautiful!

My music teacher made us do a report on latin and blues musician. My option was Gloria Estefan or Bessie Smith.I was gunna pick Gloria but someone else picked her so i was stuck with Bessie Smith. And i actually got interested in her.Her life was very interesting that i bought one of her cds.Oh and i got an A+ on the report.:)
On other songs you wonder whether she had any head voice, or whether she just used a pure chest tone but this recording resloves the question. Lovely high tones here.
if it wasnt for the yahoo music player, i wouldnt have heard of this wonderful womans extraordinary voice.........but now, apparently on the internet borders still apply, and now i cant tune in to the yahoo music chanel because i am not from the correct 'country'.
Say for a young generation I think it's cool ya'll take an interest in some of the greats, I hope ya'll carry this music to a new generation in the 21st century..Kuddos kids!
@XalaXification That is a myth, and untrue. Some dude wrote a play about her death with that happening, probably to sell more tickets... That is what started that rumor. It simply took too long for help to arrive, and she was very gravely injured.
Sounds like: Bb major, F major, D7, G7, C7, F. I'm at my computer, not the piano, so I['m not sure about the key. The progression itself, however, is right.
@wafflezful - No. I have been playing music out since 1964, and have had to learn stuff by ear real quick; sometimes with a new band with no rehearsal until we got on the stage to play! I didn't really start studying any theory until about four or five years ago; I got a couple books on jazz theory. if you're interested, I could give you the titles, etc.
The injuries Bessie Smith suffered were too severe to save her. She had her entire right side of her body crushed and her right arm was ripped off at the elbow. During those days, no ambulance driver would have bothered taking her to the white hospital. Everyone knew the rules. It also took the driver of the car 25 minutes to call the ambulance and the attending doctor's car was wrecked by kids speeding down the road. So getting her to the hospital took a long time.
@Maoszman Really? So Awful! She certainly was GREAT! How come, it seem always, that our best Blues-Soul musicians-singers suffer so in life-experience. So tragic that the truest, most beautiful pieces of music and song really are inseparable from our human struggle to live, love, and exist within Love and Life, but, too often, fall short of possessing these most essential needs-demands of emotion and Passion....And, so, by default, Pain wins; the tap root to all that Beauty. What do you think?
@rubyrose456 what makes you think Bessie had that issue? She was married and died in a car crash. She was a woman who loved men and women and was very independent.
@skyiscrying53 You''re probably right......I don't know, really, but what I feel in myself.....and projecting, I suppose, is not right for me to do......
I want to thank this woman for inspiring Janis, god its amazing how much soul they have but what amazes me is how much soul janis had as a white woman, her voice is irreplacable, love you always janis
Langston Hughes was a strong supporter of Bessie Smith. He strongly felt that her music was a very powerful instrument for change for the better during 'The Harlem Renaissance' though he despised that term for the time period.
Compared to? You certainly haven't uploaded any videos. And if this woman made money and a name for herself, while you have nothing to show but a bunch of favorited videos on your page, some comments from friends en español, the only reason you could make this case is because you are envious.
I love Bessie Smith. I discovered her cos I've always liked Janis Joplin. So I wanted to know who influenced Janis and Bessie Smith was her hero. Well i had to have a listen. I just love it. I love Robert Johnson too, if anyone wants to recomend any other blues music I'd certainly give it a listen. Thanks xx
Wow, that is my story exactly. I'm fourteen, and I've always loved msuic from the 60s (including Queen Janis), and I'm beginning to find the music that she was insspired by.
It still works. It's inspiring me. Real music never gets old.
I love Janis too, Also I would recommend Rice Miller, AKA Sonny boy Williamson, Apparently There were two different artists known as Sonny boy Williamson, But The one I have in mind was also known as Rice Miller.
Hey, there everyone, I am an 18 year old, mostly into punk, indie, and absurd amounts of alcohol, but I have to say, on my 6 disk changer, I have 2 cds, containing mostly Robert Johnson, but aside from those, my favorite songs are by Bessie Smith. Her voice is beautiful and her lyrics capture the mood I seem to always be in. I would like to thank the poster for giving me another of the4, got a text too drunk to focus,, Bessie hass a beuiful voice, her songs catch my mood, thank you Bessie.
