I didn't really start studying any theory until about four or five years ago; I got a couple books on jazz theory. if you're interested, I could give you the titles, etc.

The injuries Bessie Smith suffered were too severe to save her. She had her entire right side of her body crushed and her right arm was ripped off at the elbow. During those days, no ambulance driver would have bothered taking her to the white hospital. Everyone knew the rules. It also took the driver of the car 25 minutes to call the ambulance and the attending doctor's car was wrecked by kids speeding down the road. So getting her to the hospital took a long time.
