Something I've noticed about this game and Akibakei Kanojo is that their stories both make extreme otaku of their respective fields look bad. Akibakei kinda plainly tells you that being an otaku is not a good thing in the long run. This game has Chimera as the uber-PKer, while painting the other characters as good for doing things together outside the game (it could be making fun of hack with that, since it refuses to blur the line between reality and the game).

Kinda. The game-within-a-game was heavily inspited by Ragnarok online. The story itself I guess could be based off .hack.

Anyway, Seven Online Gamers ~Offline~ was a pretty decent game. Mind you, this is from a company that currently focuses on games severely centered on being pure smut-fests. This is one of the few exceptions to G.J.'s products, since much like Akibakei Kanojo, it tries really hard to have some semblance of story.

They are called Visual Novels, aka H-games. But some don't have H content. Most do.
