  • @LChanCosplayNetwork1 CLONE IT CLONE IT CLONE IT! lol

  • @Majinbuu298 No, it's Aisling. It's pronounced the same as Ashlyn, only with a "g" at the end.

  • @Majinbuu298 It sounds similar to Ashley but is spelled Aisling.

  • Every single time I hear this song... I either wanna cry, or draw Aisling... I'm a huge mythical creature fan, so this is like a song I never will get tired of. I always draw faeries, and unicorns. Thank You sooo much for posting this video! I LOVE THIS SONG!!! Her voice is so clear, and beautiful. My voice is high pitched like hers!!! Lol!

  • @100jojowebkinz100 yeah its sad... It sort of makes me think she's talking to Brendan, too, about going with the monk, and finishing the book... and growing up.

  • Níl sa saol seo ach ceo nach bhfuil muid beo ach seal beag gearr ,this are the real lyrics now in english:

  • lol, my girlfriend Aisling would love this lol

  • I LOVE this song...I watched it for the first time on netflix (just so you know it was available for watching on the cp) and it was amazing! Right afterwords I looked it up on youtube and learned the lyrics. But I recently came back on to listen to it again and look what a treasure I found! Thanks soooo much for making this! I've wanted the translation for awhile now and here it is!

p.s- I'm not McChicken, just a friend. (: -RioGirl signing out

  • @NcChicken lol so did I but mine is on the wii

  • @NcChicken Wow... thats EXACTLY what i did! :D awesome

  • the cat at the end was like wtf just happened.

  • This was such a beautiful film. The Gaelic song is so pretty. lol I dare you to find another Englishmen to admit to Gaelic sounding pretty though. XD

  • @Jamez773 It is wrong to call it Gaelic. It is called Irish. Irish is one of the Gaelic languages, yes, but you wouldn't call Spanish by it's classification, Ibero-Romance, would you? There are a few Gaelic languages surviving, but they all have their differences. To call Irish Gaelic is also to say that the language in this film is Scots-Gaelic, too, for example, but it is not.

People in Ireland call it Irish - Americans call it Gaelic. I've never understood why.

  • @Quessir well Irish and Scottish are both Gaelic languages. Saying "The Gaelic song" is kinda like saying "that Native American song" there are different dialects but they are all native American. Same with the Native languages of the our Natives and Ireland's natives. I meant it as an all encompassing statement not specifically for Irish.

  • @Quessir it's because nobody does there fuckin homework. They want to talk but but they dont want to do shit to back it up.

  • this song is so pretty

  • wht languge is it in tho???

  • @TaterMoranFan

yup i saw it too, and by the words of tvtropes,

it has some shout outs to the theif and the cobbler and calvin and hobbes as well (which i noticed and giggled like the little fangirl i am when i watched this awesome movie)

  • @TaterMoranFan That was my first though on seeing it. It's eerily similar, but I think this one's more... I don't know, liquid-y. does that make sense?

  • Can someone please upload the whole movie? :(

  • @DuchessAliana If you're in the US this is available to watch on Netflix's streaming. If not, perhaps Amazon has it with their digital movies.

  • Correct translation;

Nil sa saol seo ach ceo,

    Is ni bheimid beo,

    ach seal beag gearr.

There is nothing in this life/world but mist,

And we will only be alive

    For a short time.

FYI; bán means white and Aisling means vision or dream. In the time that the poem of Pangur Bán was written the name Pangur was quite a common name to give to a cat.

  • What language is this?

  • @792Ashman Irish Gaelic.

  • *Spoiler Alert* If she can move a heavy stone *twice* then when can she not enter the building?

  • @JoSoProductions I think it's because she can't enter man-made buildings.

  • Comment removed

  • @JoSoProductions @JoSoProductions

My thought is that since Aisling is fae, therefore of the old faith, pagan faith, perhaps she cannot enter a Christian tower ? After all she shape-changes without qualm, I think the issue is as she sings ''you must go where I cannot''.

  • @Clahane

No she could not go in because the Abbott was there and she could not risk exposing herself to anyone else.

The story is a mixture of the Old Faith and Christianity, a good mixture that balances well. Aisling helps Brendon with the book "that turns the darkness to light" (the Book of Kells, an illuminated version of the four Gospels of Christ). They battle The Dark One Crom and then he completes the book with the crystal.

  • @Clahane THANKS!

  • @JoSoProductions so she doesn't wake up the other men and/or so the guys don't find out right away he has escaped (i think) plus i like the song ;)

  • luv it!! i showed it to my friend. i saw the movie its awesome.

  • The translation is a real help. I loved this scene in the movie; it was an amazing piece of work in an equally amazing film.

  • thanks !!!

  • This is my lalluby song before I go to sleep. :)

  • I just watched "The Secret of Kells" on Netflix instant view this week. I make plush animals and was commissioned by my husband to make a white cat for his boss (his cat just died). So while making this white cat today, I have this song stuck in my head! "You must go where I cannot...Pangur Bán...Pangur Bán..."

Such a gorgeous song! I want to buy the soundtrack!

  • Pangur Ban was originally a poem, the author remained anonymous.

I loved this movie so much <3

For those, like myself, that didn't get this in theatres

you can watch it on OnDemand, with cox.

I suggest it, it was wonderful!

  • The lyrics aren't quite correct but it's close. They are "Not in this world but as fog, We are not to live, but for a little while longer, in our short spell, but for a little while longer, we are not to live but for a little while longer"

It is Irish Gaelic. There is Scottish Gaelic which is usually called Gaelic, and Irish Gaelic which is often called Irish. Though different, they are very similar sharing most words and structure.

  • @KelseyMackid awesome.

  • @KelseyMackid Ah. I love a well-informed reply.

  • @KelseyMackid I thought we call it Gaeilige? :-\

  • i love the movie secret of kells it is soooooooo good especially the song i put it on tape but i cant put it on youtube cuse my mom says its pirating...... i really want to

  • what language is this actually?

  • @Nhordmyr Gaelic

  • @0pwaffles ah :)

  • I want the DVD so much. One of the most visually amazing things I've seen. More stunning and breathtaking than Avatar. And this song is just beautiful.

  • The word "saol" means "life" . So. - There is nothing in this life but fog. (Sometimes the word is used for world. But the word for world is 'domhan'. Pronounced like "dowan"

  • This movie is really great. :)

  • what language is this in?

  • @mrsanimal0lover Im pretty sure the movie was made in france, so I'm guessing French

  • @Frostdrgn2 it doesn't sound french to me

  • @Frostdrgn2 No. It's in Irish.

  • @mrsanimal0lover Irish. Or usually called "Gaeilge" The celtic language which was spoken in ireland before any kind of English made it there. Before they were ruled by the British.

  • @danitiwa oh... now i know what irish speaks ha ha ha before english :)

  • *facepalm*

The book of Kells is a national Irish treasure, being the illuminated (illustrated) translation of the first four books of the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Written approximately 800 AD.

  • Thank you for the translation and the actual lyrics.

  • @PolarisGrace np ^^

  • @HyperMilton Is the text and translation (in blue) on the video itself correct? People fluent in English can state with certainty that what we see written in English in the video has flaws. Great singing and very moving, but if the English flaws are fixed it would be a cool video to share.

  • @holisticguy It looks as if the maker of the vid directly transliterated from the Gaeilge. At one point in the film, a character gives a more direct English translation for the song's lines: "It's a misty old world, and we're only in it for a short, sharp while."

  • @quizzicalsphinx actually when she says "nil an shaol seo ach cheo" or whatever, shaol means your soul XD and i got to a fluent fully irish school.

  • Thankyou for posting this vid with the lyrics I've been trying to locate them and translation for about 20 minutes. I loved this movie! If anyone knows of movies similar to this I'd be very interested in knowing what you recommend.

  • The Book of Kells is not about the Celtic belief system. It's an Illuminated Manuscript, arguably the most beautiful in existence. It is a Christian document, (the four Gospels). The art is of high Celtic influence, along with Roman and Norse (Insular Art), so it definitely included nature themes. The Book was used as a tool by monks to convert pagan tribes, basically by showing how adaptable Christianity is by using familiar art styles. You can actually see older Brendan doing this in the film!

  • Stop arguing about it and just enjoy the song! It's a beautiful but haunting song, and if you really enjoyed the movie you'd know it does not deserve to be argued about in such a way.

Come up with your own explanation - isn't that always part of the fun?

  • anyone know how to download this song or clip to a computer?

  • anyone know how to download this song or clip to a computer?

  • i saw that on netflix :3 it's AWSOME! >W<

  • I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH AND I WANT THE MOVIE SO BAD I SAW IT IN MY CLASS AND IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL

  • Comment removed

  • For those of us who do not have netflicks, amazon rents out the movie digitally for 3 days. :D costs $4 though. >_< Still less than a movie ticket. We connected our computer to our TV and watched it. ;) Anyway, just one more option. I think you can buy a hard copy on Amazon too…

  • For anyone who's curious-this movie is on instant watch on Netflix right now.

Such an awesome movie. Thanks for posting the lyrics! I'm not skilled with Gaelic yet, so it's nice to have a reference for understanding.

  • The Book of Kells is an illuminated version of the four Gospels of the Bible, not "an Irish tale on their beliefs of nature." History. Google. Wikipedia. ARRRGH.

  • @naamahdarling - it is 'beliefs in nature.' See, the Viking came to pillage, or whatever, and they stole the cover, because it was jewel encrusted, of the Book of Kells-some sort of a spell book or a charm. So, folks, hope I made that clear-oh, and points for devstar96 for including both translations.

  • @naamahdarling wrong the name is short for Keelis

  • @naamahdarling couldn't expect any less from wikipedia lol.

  • I wish every aspergers anime fan would just vanish from this beautiful video.

  • @acanthopleura im a anime fan and i made this video :3

  • The movie is on Netflix instant for those who have that!!!!

  • I loved this scene!!!

  • Finally this came to stores here! The fact that it's an independant film makes perfect sense now. No wonder we had to wait for long for the DVD to come to stores. (Not sure if that explains the fact that it didn't show in Canadian theaters but played in American theaters, though)

  • Technically, the translation is "It's a misty old world, and we are only in it for a short, sharp while."

  • Gaelic? I thought she was singing in Celtic Irish, an old Irish language. Are they the same? Just curious.

  • iv wacht the movie i wod give it a 1009

  • There's also Scottish-Gaelic languages too, she's singing in Irish.

  • Okay boys and girls I'm gunna answer your questions.

    1. This is NOT an anime, it's obviously cartoon.

    2. The movie is called The Secret of Kells. It's an Independant Film so unless you're in New York chances are you're NOT going to see it being sold in your city for a while. It's not even in Chicago yet.

    3. If you know any thing about The Book of Keels, it is -more or less- an Irish tale on their beliefs of nature. The Irish were very passionate about nature. Therefore, she is singing in Irish.

  • @ilbirdies yes but the name of the Irish language is Gaelic

  • @devstar96 the national language of Ireland is Irish... not Gaelic - only Americans think it's called Gaeilic.

  • @aisangiejosie Actually the language is called Gaeilge, pronounced Gael-Geh. Eg: Do You Speak Irish = An Bhfuil Gaeilge Agat? (Lit Trans. Do You Have Irish.)

  • @dickdona exactly so for any non speaking irish people- when you read something in Irish it may not make perfect sense when translated directly to English- like in the video, but for Irish speaking people it does make sense! Also yes we wouldn't call it Gaelic, we'd call it Gaeilge or Irish!

  • @devstar96 There's two types of Gaelic. Irish and Scottish. But you are right.

  • @devstar96 well actually the ancient language of Ireland in Irish

  • @devstar96 that is very common mistake. Gaelic is the language family that Irish is in along Scottish and couple others. Irish is in fact what the people in Ireland call it so its safe to say the language is Irish

  • @qunitvin Or Irish Gaelic if specificity is desired. As opposed to say, Scottish Gaelic, or Welsh Gaelic

  • @devstar96 The common name for the language is Irish, Gaelic is what the language refers to itself. Like how Japanese refers to itself as Nihongo.

  • @devstar96

Gaelic is not the same as Irish, Irish is to Gealic, as English is to German.

  • @ImperatorZor Not really. There are painful and tedious variations in the pronunciation and spelling of various choice phrases and words, but for the most part the Gaelic language(and all of it's dialects) is rather unified. English and German on the other hand merely have a few similar words and are strikingly different considering they have the same basic roots. Yes, for future reference one could properly address this particular dialect as Irish Gaelic instead of Gaelic but its not required.

  • Fair enough.

  • @ImperatorZor Good man.

  • @devstar96 The name of my language is Gaeilge or Irish, no one calls it Gaelic.

  • @HyperMilton he probably didn't spell it right we know what he meant

  • @devstar96 your right posted it on the one that looks like it

  • @devstar96 nope, it's called Irish :-)

  • @devstar96 Nope, we Irish call our language Irish. The Scots speak Gaelic; the Irish speak Irish. But ilbirdies is totally wrong about the Book of Kells; it's an illuminated copy of the four gospels and has very little to do with traditional Irish pagan beliefs.

  • @kakashiwoman42 I thought Gaelic/Celtic is what Irish is derived from. Or is that called Ancient Gaelic? (Which would explain why the Scots' language is of the same name.)

  • @devstar96 People in Ireland speak Irish, not Gaelic they are similar but not the same

  • @ilbirdies The Irish at the time of the finishing of the Book of Kells were Catholic. While the Celts were very passionate about nature, that ended when the Romans came into the picture and added it to the empire.

  • @ilbirdies not to spilt hairs, but anime is the japanese word for "animated cartoon", "cartoon" would be a still image.

  • @poposhka123 Yes, but this isn't japanese, wise guy. And translation =/= actual meaning

Anime is a japanese cartoon/movie. This is Irish. :P

  • @yayrupees actually, it's french, based on celtic irish drawing style.. :s

  • @ilbirdies The book of Kells is the 4 Gospels from the bible not a book of Irish folktales. I wish it was but if you want that, I'd suggest the Tain or the Book of Invasions.

  • @ilbirdies The Book of Kells is not, in any way, shape, or form, an Irish tale on their beliefs of nature. It is an illuminated manuscript, a book of the Gospels. In actual history, it was never finished. So, it may be infused with some Irish symbols, but the Book of Kells was a Christian work.

  • @ilbirdies it's the book of kells, not keels

  • @ilbirdies Um, 'anime' is just what the Japanese call animations - i.e. cartoons...

  • @ilbirdies In western countries, anime means japanese style animation. But in japan, "anime" simply means animation. Which includes anime, cartoons, and CGI films.

  • @ilbirdies but the person who made it likes manga and studio ghibi but yrah its not an anime.. but it should be XD.

  • @Mangobitz Anime is Japanese animation. This is from Ireland.

  • @ilbirdies anime = cartoon

  • @acanthopleura true, but not all cartoons = anime. For example, this one. Think of a venn diagram, with "Cartoon" beng a large circle, and "Anime" a smaller circle completely inside the larger "Cartoon" circle.

  • @bogieman145 jesuschrist cartoon = anime

  • @ilbirdies netflix ftw

  • @VeohXni lolol saw this on netflix like 20 mins ago. f yeah.

  • @ilbirdies Actually the Book of Kells is a Holy Bible containing the four gospels and new testament.

  • @ilbirdies

The book of kells is the new testament of the bible with very beautiful, culturally relevant art in it. It has nothing more to do with nature than the bible does.

  • @ilbirdies

    Condescending and inaccurate. Well done!

  • @ilbirdies

Umm...actually the Book of the Kells is the 4 Gospels from the Bible. It is the earliest example of cultural work for Ireland, hence it's importance as a heritage.

  • what language is she singing in?

  • Comment removed

  • yup its a movie

  • But it isn't anime is it? Those are normal cartoons. o.o

  • @funelizabeth its the secret of kells

  • @funelizabeth its a movie called The Secret of Kells

  • @funelizabeth Lulz, not an anime ^^

  • @funelizabeth ..It looks nothing LIKE anime you deserve to be flogged D<

  • @funelizabeth But it's not an anime. It's French-Belgian-Irish.

  • @funelizabeth it's not a show you idiot
