You know, I find this oddly hopeful. In the first one, they'd formed a cargo cult, unsure if there were any other humans on Earth. In the second, clearly they'd found someone else, even if they'd had to kill him, and by the third, they'd an entire ops team at their disposal. They're all gone by the last, but someone's still out there, and likely someone found a way to defeat "them"... these two have a base's resources between just them, and their hopes have come true before.
13And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains
In the last of the pre-event years a group was formed with the intention of taking one modest company and changing it into something that could bring peace to the World. Initially the group struggled, as their alcohol schemes failed due to mergers.
However this group would later limit it's scheme to only allow slightly less than two drinks, it became the Inebriati. Unfortunately, they elected a new leader who got fighty. The World was declared numberwang, that, was the event. REMAIN INDOORS!
Revelations 6.13 -15 : "and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains."
Holy crap, no wonder they get distressed just thinking about The Event.
I think one of the things I like most about Mitchell and Webb is just how fucking dark so much of it is--here, it's evil, depressing, funny as hell; in that Sherlock Holmes has Alzheimer's sketch it's incredibly poignant, and in both cases, it's sheer genius.
The last broadcast is perhaps one of the most complex things I've ever seen on T.V. It's incredible how the host saying "Let's stand together" goes from being darkly humorous to completely heart-rending once you begin to fully appreciate the desperation that the two remaining survivors must be feeling, the implications of their last refuge from the horrors of their existence being destroyed, and the questions that are raised from the sudden, mass death of "Them".
I think the Quiz Broadcasts might be one of my favourite Mitchell and Webb sketches! It's such a perfect blend of darkness and humour. Still, for some reason, I'd love to hear the last one without the laughter track, like the Holmes sketch had at the end; it's heart-wrenching, and by that point the humour is overtaken by the poignancy of the final situation, so the uneasy laughter is a little out of place for me here.
@CCNuck I think so because everything get more and more tattered as they go along, but there's at least one more episode that I think occurs before these.
i have a question for mitchell and webb fans(such as myself):how would you live out a post apocalyptic-zombie infested world? i'd search for all the food and weaponry i could and then live in an abandoned, large building such as a bank/school/hotel spending my time boarding up all the windows and writing my life story in chalk on the floor of a large room
@Yggdrasillpeter ah well it will always end in suicide I'm afraid, at least it usually does in the movies, I'd probably jump of the roof into a group of the zombies with grenades in my hands, that would be a way to go
@Haeronthegreat Haven't seen TV in 5 years so this is new to me but having grown up during the cold war with parents who worked on defence and in government, this is actually quite stressful viewing.

@hyphz: I thought it be sad, because by that point the obviously used "fake" laughter in the background, to give a false sense happyness.

All of the laughter at the end is nervous, lonely laughter...frightened and despairing
Salierethefish 1 month ago 2
@Salierethefish I think the point is that the laugh track kind of removes the point that, "there is no-one else". There should be no-one to laugh.
