I wish television would move back to this kind of interaction. The polished and produced sound can be nice, but I like the spontaneity JC and ND here.
I watch this over&over again.A great young Neil Diamond. It's clear why he "made it"...Saw him Live a few years back in Albany NY and he rocked the house........
I was stationed in Vietnam when this song first aired. I was listening to AFN Radio and could hardly believe what I was hearing. This revival song was so far out of the mainstream of soul, rock, and classical stuff being played on the airwaves. I became a follower of Neil since then. He makes music great, and makes great music.
This has to be the best song ever! I play this song in my car for my Mom she has Dementia this is the one & only song that calms her and she starts clapping! Trust me I play this song over & over cause I love it too!!!!! Thanks Neil for all the great Music!!!
I think that Neil D. Sums up a simple faith of reaching out to those in need with one hand, and when we are in need we reach out to the Good Lord in Heaven, Amen Brother!
He said, he was looking for answers in collage. He's not going to find them in collage. Reach your hand to the man up their, and you'll get hit by lightning.HaHaha
I listen to this song at lease once a week, sometimes more, just makes me want to be a better person!!!!!! "Back up the Babies Grab The Old Lady Everyone Goes" Love it!!

What a pleasure to see this amazing clip. Neil is captured right at that magical age and moment in his career. His presence is amazing. I was a kid at the time but I remember this song and what a great time on AM radio it was. Thank You!
One man with a guitar, a stool and a microphone. I can't imagine how intimidating it would be to stand in front of hundreds or thousands of people with nothing but your God given talent.
I've always loved this song. Thanks for sharing this video clip. Amazing.... Neil Diamond giving Testimomy on Johnny Cash's nationally broadcast tv show. For those who are believers, enjoy... for those who aren't, at least you can appreciate this very talented man and his performance.
In 1972 or 1973 i had the good fortune of seeing Mr. Diamond perform this song live in Wichita Ks at Century II. I was 14 or 15 years old and totally smiten. He started to sing this song, and I walked up to the stage front and center and stood there (no one else was up in the concert hall), in awe and watched him. I have never forgotten this and I am still smitten. :)
The story Neil tells in the middle of this song is truly inspirational ... and ought to be required listening for every young person. How easy it is to convince ourselves that book knowledge makes us superior, when in fact a life without spirituality is surprisingly unfulfilled.
golden. I know many of you have noticed a pattern with my generation, some of us get music some of us like emo. But if I may be so daring as to speak for everyone else. This is pure gold
I can't tell you how many times I would just be starting up Roger's Pass in Montana (my unofficial halfway point between Great Falls & Missoula) in my 1964 VW Bug (with the manual crank sun-roof) when this song would roll into the 8track que and I would "rock" up the pass...oh the "Golden Montana of my Youth"...what a great song & an even greater story...
Music was much much better back then. At that time it was based on the song, the artist's talent, and how well they performed it. Now is another story all together. Now it is based on how pretty the artist is. Something about that is just not right somehow, but I suppose that is how the world has revolved.
Atheists commonly point out what horrors have been committed for the sake of religion (which is, unfortunately true) while forgetting the millions killed in the name of Communism and Socialism. They spread their gospel of un-faith with the sneer of arrogance, offering Nothing to replace the hope of Faith, in denial of the statistical fact that believers live longer, healthier lives.. They also negate every spiritual phenomenon, even those witnessed in scientific environments.
Considering youtube is not going to allow tv show and movies, head over to |stream episodes [dot] net| to watch these movies instead #VIDEOPOSTERID#. That is what I started using to watch movies and Lost.
They are awesome. There's got to be an eternity so we can hear them all together again! I agree, nothing today compares to how it must have been then. Their songs made sense and they sang them so well.
I LOVE this version!!! His FIRST time to perform it - and the honesty of his inspiration in his story intro is heartfelt!!!! BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
Its like he was predicting the arrival of Benny Hinn...LOL I went school with his daughter (Neil, not Benny) and the day of graduation his white limo splashed mud on me, and the f*ing bastard didn't even slow down.
I'm going to betray my advanced age here, along with my still-good memory, and mention that "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" was a hit record that came out in Feb. 1969. So it was actually a hit, at least in the US, before this TV show aired. A couple of other things in the Neil Diamond timeline - in between the success of this song and this TV appearance, he had 2 other hits that you may have heard of - "Sweet Caroline" and "Holly Holy". At the time of this show, his hit was "Shilo".
@Cainefan No. Ridiculous, isn't it? He's in good company, however! The list of people who SHOULD be in that hall is staggering: The Moody Blues, Chicago, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Harry Nilsson, Johnny Rivers, Neil Diamond...just to name a few.
Guys, I know this sounds prohpetic, but music was better then. Music were painted from stories, real life stories. Today, there are few great stories, NO FREEDOM, boring - thats why today's songs lack substance. Only Sting and few others can write beautiful stories. SAD :(
@eddied111 Everyone thinks music was better in the past, thats because it was part of growing up, experiencing things for the first time. The songs you listened to were woven into those memories. Twenty years from now, middle aged men and women will be talking about how today's music was the pinnacle of artistic expression.
For the record, I love Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash...
@rbairos1 I beg to differ songs back then were better not because of memories from childhood. I like listening to songs from way back when i wasn't born yet. Also Music back then was an art today its more like a commodity. Musicians back then really had to be good to be famous there wasn't no internet, CATV, few people could afford to buy records etc. theres only radio. Musicians now can sing crappy music and still be famous because of the internet and mostly juvenile people buying their crap.
@MrLimsky83 The argument still stands. You enjoy listening to music from before you were born in part because you discovered it growing up. Add to the fact that songs from the previous generation are appropriated into the current generation's tv/movie soundtracks. Musicians from earlier generations still had to hustle themselves to build a following and get radio play and get signed, just as they do today. 'The kids today don't know' argument is just a cyclic pattern Ive lately come to realize.
@MrLimsky83 Secondly, not to belabour the point, have you a working knowledge of the differences between popular music styles today such as: drum+bass, house, jazzfusion, etc? I don't so I realize I lack the experience or skills to claim its all crap based on my ignorance of the topic. Lets just say music is an exiting field where generation after generation are fortunate enough to discover and soon love some new genre that they emotionally bond with for life, and for that I am grateful.
@rbairos1 LMAO So your saying one must know all the musical styles for you to tell whether a singer/song is bad? I like listening to them discovered them growing up? What the fuck is that even suppose to mean ? Man your logic is fucked up. Talking about Genres? lol Shit, it doesn't matter what genre it is when its good its good. Around 1996 I was still in high school and in my opinion thats when shit hit the fan MTV started to get so commercialized I soon stopped watching it. Thats also when
@rbairos1 the internet started to get widely used around that time. I didn't have to study Music back then to be able to know that music was turning for the worse. Oh you can say music always evolves but what we are experiencing is more like a devolution. It's more like to be a "Good musician" isn't about how good you are or how creative you are now it's about how much money you make. So they're spouting album after album solely for the purpose of generating income. No wonder music us shit now
@MrLimsky83 Alright, it's strange you're getting so rude about so simple an observation. If you insist on being arrogant enough to assume you were part of the last generation that demanded 'good' mainstream music, so be it, but don't act so insulted when in ten years your kids make the exact same claim.
@rbairos1 I never said I was. My kids can shit on the music in my generation in fact I'll encourage it. I just don't see your argument that the reason music was good back then is because of older people being nostalgic.
@rbairos1 boyI would like to agree with you, but I cannot- the music then was pure, whether it was jimi hendrix, zeppelin, dylan, diamond and cash- the song was the song, the artist brought it too life. You see none of that in music today, most is syntisized and produced w/o a real song fabric to it. If people have the conversation you referenced it will be very few IMO
@eddied111 I think that is a sad way of looking at things. Im 42 yrs old and I love music. I hate it when my friends say "They dont make music like that anymore" and its true cus its 2011! Move with the times or get left behind as a fossil. When I was a kid we would spend HOURS in dusty record stores looking for the rarest imports and we would find GEMS. Are you really telling me with the ENTIRE WOLD of music at your finger tips you cant find ANY GOOD music? Get with the times.
@thejetshowlive Well Im 41 and I can say that the times have washed down this kind of great music--there are no cash', diamonds, springsteens, dylans,or n young types anywhere--all you get is BS rap music--yes some has some beat and character, but most is sad expressions, the others you get are biebers and BS talent shows---the purity of songwriting is few and far between. I simply don't agree, time has eroded the music for many reasons.
@jabb69 I think there are a few good groups out there now, with music that says something - The Kings of Leon, Zac Brown Band are a couple. I always wonder, did I realize how great some of the icons of the 70s and 80s were back then, or is it looking back that I know it now?
It is a Fender "Dreadnaught" - they stopped making then about 1985 - when Fender bought Guild out of bankruptcy!!! Today they call the Sonoran Series - and they sell for about $1800!!!!!!!! THAT is a fine musical instrument!!!!!!!
Seeing this reminds me why I had such a massive crush on Neil in my youth. He's never looked more beautiful than he does here, and he had already developed such a powerful stage presence--and such charm. And this is his best song, I think. Hmm, I think I'm crushing again!
And if there were a Mount Rushmore for music, he and Johnny would both be on it. Need room for more than four, though!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What an honor it is to have this uploaded to this sight. It makes me orgasm when he plays his guitar. Check out my video of Neil sniffing Johnnys fart just moments after this broadcast...
"Take my hand dear God, walk with me this day...Amen, that God is real ! ! .for He has helped me walk this day.....song gives me great comfort on days like today when I feel like giving up...thank you Neal for capturing that special moment when one walks with God and pours on Him his troubles...for that is trully what He's there for !
I remember this song! I was a kid riding around in our parents' VW wagon while living in Jackson, Mississippi, and they would play this along with many, many other great songs. The 70s were so damn awesome, and it looks like this video (being done in 1970) kicked it off right. :-D
I could watch this a hundred times, what a Performance. Thanks for sharing.

What everybody has said here is so true. I live where
there used to be a lot of revivals from different churches.
It's also a shame that some churches don't have
revivals anymore or sunday and wednesday night
services. It used to be what brought people into
church sometimes. Now all you see are these big
named preachers and their crusades.

No wonder music us shit now
MrLimsky83 1 year ago
@MrLimsky83 Alright, it's strange you're getting so rude about so simple an observation. If you insist on being arrogant enough to assume you were part of the last generation that demanded 'good' mainstream music, so be it, but don't act so insulted when in ten years your kids make the exact same claim.
rbairos1 1 year ago
@rbairos1 I never said I was. My kids can shit on the music in my generation in fact I'll encourage it. I just don't see your argument that the reason music was good back then is because of older people being nostalgic.
MrLimsky83 1 year ago
@rbairos1 boyI would like to agree with you, but I cannot- the music then was pure, whether it was jimi hendrix, zeppelin, dylan, diamond and cash- the song was the song, the artist brought it too life. You see none of that in music today, most is syntisized and produced w/o a real song fabric to it. If people have the conversation you referenced it will be very few IMO

@eddied111 Noone COULD write this song today cuz noone has tent revivals anymore. We're too advanced for that i guess
kensingtonpalace 11 months ago
@kensingtonpalace Come to Virginia. The Assembly of God or other evangelical church will offer a revival soon enough.
ripley1423 11 months ago
@ripley1423 it's good to hear they are still going on somewhere!

Get with the times.
thejetshowlive 6 months ago
@thejetshowlive Well Im 41 and I can say that the times have washed down this kind of great music--there are no cash', diamonds, springsteens, dylans,or n young types anywhere--all you get is BS rap music--yes some has some beat and character, but most is sad expressions, the others you get are biebers and BS talent shows---the purity of songwriting is few and far between. I simply don't agree, time has eroded the music for many reasons.
jabb69 6 months ago 4
@jabb69 I think there are a few good groups out there now, with music that says something - The Kings of Leon, Zac Brown Band are a couple. I always wonder, did I realize how great some of the icons of the 70s and 80s were back then, or is it looking back that I know it now?

Oh, Neil! Anyone who can tell me what kind of guitar Neil Diamond has gets $700...okay, not really, but pleeze tell me someone!!!
MOLLYryaiMOON 2 years ago
It's a Fender. One of the best acoustic guitars of the time and very suited to Neil's style and music.
here4family 2 years ago
It is a Fender "Dreadnaught" - they stopped making then about 1985 - when Fender bought Guild out of bankruptcy!!! Today they call the Sonoran Series - and they sell for about $1800!!!!!!!! THAT is a fine musical instrument!!!!!!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
And Johnny - as always - is playing a Martin acoustic!!!!!!!

What an honor it is to have this uploaded to this sight. It makes me orgasm when he plays his guitar. Check out my video of Neil sniffing Johnnys fart just moments after this broadcast...

I remember this song! I was a kid riding around in our parents' VW wagon while living in Jackson, Mississippi, and they would play this along with many, many other great songs. The 70s were so damn awesome, and it looks like this video (being done in 1970) kicked it off right. :-D
