I remember that night. A line of severe thunderstorms came through. In fact, the NWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning.

The Earth is 4,000,000 miles closer to the Sun in late December than it is in early July.
Could be an effect of Solar Perigee? We always called that the "December Thaw" back in Connecticut.
