I agree tho, that there is a lot of dumbing down going on. Ever read "the age of unreason" by Susan Jacoby? I highly recommend it, if you haven't yet read it. Tells the history of how America, and American culture are slowly becoming dumber and dumber, how intellectualism has become condemned, and how Fundamentalist Christianity was able to make a come back, and find it's way into the politics of the white house.(most notably with George Bush)
Get rid of property tax, too, and taxes on things which should be privately funded entities. Not that I condone a flat rate tax, not at all. We just need a more even and logical allocation of funds. Cut/abolish taxes on shit that doesn't need taxing, and raise taxes on millionaires, and distribute the extra funds more evenly, while reducing our borrowing of money, and lowering our debt. It's like, instead of borrowing, why can't we just more wisely spend our money?
Not all rich folks are opposed to paying more taxes, and in fact, some write an extra check to the white house, and choose to pay more. One such [erson is Warren Buffett, who is a multi-millionaire who proposed an extra tax on millionaires. The rich folks who oppose this usually the ones who don't pay their fair share, and find ways to pay less and pocket more. They claim far less taxes than they should.
So these proposals are not an allowance system, it's just a way to even the playing field.
